Dunwoody's Peachtree Charter Middle School Students won the regional National Science Bowl & followed it up with a great trip to Washington DC this weekend.

Kudos to these young men from Peachtree Charter Middle School who proudly represented the entire State of Georgia at the National Science Bowl this weekend in Washington D.C.  Though they will not be returning home with the National title, these young men and their phenomenal advisors / PCMS Treachers, Ms. Laurie Smith & Ms. Leslie Robertson will be invited to a future Dunwoody City Council meeting to have their extraordinary accomplishments recognized and a proclamation read in their honor.
A team of middle school students from Dunwoody, Georgia won their regional competition for the 2017 National Science Bowl® (NSB) this past weekend and will advance to compete in the NSB National Finals this spring in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced today.

“The National Science Bowl® continues to be one of the premier academic competitions across the country and prepares America's students for future successes in some of the world’s fastest growing fields in science, technology, and engineering,” said Dr. J. Stephen Binkley, Acting Director of the Department’s Office of Science, which sponsors the nationwide competition, now in its 27th year. “Each year the DOE Office of Science provides this unique opportunity, and I am honored to congratulate all the competitors who are advancing to the national finals, where they will continue to showcase their talents as top students in math and science.”

The NSB brings together thousands of middle and high school students from across the country to compete in a fast-paced question-and-answer format where they solve technical problems and answer questions on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth and space science, physics and math.

The team from your area that won their qualifying regional competition this past weekend and will be advancing to the National Finals is:

Peachtree Middle School, Dunwoody, Georgia

A series of 116 regional middle school and high school tournaments are being held across the country from January through March. Winners will advance to represent their areas at the National Science Bowl® held from April 27 to May 1 in Washington, D.C., for the final middle school and high school competitions.

The top 16 high school teams and the top 16 middle school teams in the National Finals will win $1,000 for their schools’ science departments. Prizes for the top two high school teams for the 2017 NSB will be announced at a later date.

The high school team that won the 2016 NSB received a nine-day, all-expenses-paid science trip to Alaska, where they learned more about glaciology, marine and avian biology, geology and plate tectonics. The second-place high school team at the 2016 NSB won a five-day, fully guided adventure tour of several national parks, which included a whitewater rafting trip.

Approximately 265,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl® in its 26-year history, and it is one of the nation’s largest science competitions. More than 14,000 students compete in the NSB each year.

Easter morning I will be taking a little hike up Stone Mountain

I last made this hike in 2015, left the house at 5:45 and almost missed sunrise.  5 a.m. alarm is set.
Pack a blanket & extra layers as it will be windy, snacks and water are advisable.
Bring a flashlight; even better is a headlamp.

Easter Sunrise Service

Experience serenity and peace as the Stone Mountain Sunrise Association presents two simultaneous, non-denominational Easter services at the top of the Mountain and at the base of the Mountain on the Memorial Lawn.

The event began in 1944, before the land around Stone Mountain was officially owned by the State of Georgia. Lucille A. Lanford, from Stone Mountain First United Methodist Church, suggested that the church’s youth group climb to the top of Stone Mountain on Easter morning to watch the sunrise. The event grew from that one youth group to thousands ascending the mountain every Easter since.
The event is produced by The Stone Mountain Sunrise Association. Both services will feature sign language interpreters for hearing impaired guests.

Date: Easter Sunday - April 16, 2017

Time: 7:00 a.m. (Park Gates and Summit Skyride open at 4:00 a.m.) Please allow an extra hour or more for large crowds.

Tickets: Vehicle entry to the park is $15 for a one-day permit or $40 for annual permit. Church vans and buses enter free. Skyride fees are $12 for round-trip and $8 for one-way. There are no fees for the walk-up trail to the top of the mountain.

Dunwoody schedules overnight paving of Tilly Mill / Peeler & N Peachtree for tonight and goes all weekend.

Overnight Paving Operations Scheduled for April 7 to April 10

Construction crews are scheduled to begin paving operations on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. and work continuously until Monday, April 10, 2017 at 6:00 a.m., weather permitting.

The overnight paving work and continuous operations allows for expedited project delivery and the anticipated completion of the first phase of paving known as “leveling.”

While the scheduled overnight paving and continuous operations (beginning April 7 at 7 pm until April 10 at 6 am) may be a short-term inconvenience, the approach offers several advantages: Enhanced schedule coordination with DeKalb County Schools by conducting the work during the latter half of the of DeKalb County School spring break when many people are out of town and traffic is lighter. Reduction in the total number of days paving will take place on the project.

Advanced scheduling process for driveway and grass restoration on homeowner properties. The city anticipates the potential for an additional future weekend paving operation following the April 7-10 work to permit the installation of the final topping course for the project surface. A future notice will be distributed as soon as scheduling details are coordinated.

Travel delays and lane closures can be expected during the weekend work period and crews will be on hand to ensure safe passage through the construction area. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact the City of Dunwoody Project Team via email at construction@dunwoodyga.gov or by phone 678-382-6850.
