Video of the March 26th Dunwoody City Council Meeting

Recap, everything was passed as presented except the Growler item was modified quite extensively from the last first read therefore we conducted another first read and this will be on the next agenda for approval. Discussions on the Georgetown proposal, grading, growlers and garage sales were all interesting and all will be back in front of us at some time.

  1. John, what do you know about the City's plan to now allow the dirt from Chamblee High School to be "dumped" in Brook Run? I am totally, totally against this. Who do I contact?

  2. Mom, I haven't seen the final plans but was told that the clean fill dirt scheduled to go to Glaze will now be split between the cemetery on Winters Chapel and the back 30 acres of Brook Run. I know the city is doing a chemical analysis of the dirt before accepting it onto our property and believe the clean fill dirt will cover the very poor soil left where the old hospital was located, smoothed out, compacted and grass planted to allow the community another viable playing field. I am guessing a water and sediment plan will be developed also.

As soon as I have more information I will post but right now all I know is that the permit for Glaze was pulled to take advantage of the other two options.

For further information I would reach out to Brent walker the City Parks Director at 678-382-6700.

  3. Thanks, John. If the dirt is needed in Brook Run and it tests "clean" then it sounds like a good plan - though I would like to see something official on this. Sometimes this city is so frustrating with its lack of communication with its citizens.

  4. John,

"...allow the community another viable playing field. ..."

Any ideas on that playing field being open to the public, as opposed to for the exclusive use of league play?

Many seem to support that a public field would better situated in the open area nearest the Fire Station at Barclay. That would secure a pin corner of the Park.

  5. Gonna have a Cuban cigar garage sale soon - including brands La Gloria Cubana, Montecristo, and Romeo y Julieta (these are my particular favorites being the Shakespearean scholar and great romantic that I am).

If you plan on buying more than ten boxes, I'll be letting you sample one cigar from the box with a dram of Glengoyne Single Malt (poured slowly over one large ice cube sitting in an Old Fashioned glass) while I enthrall you with my anecdotes of the reprobate raconteur in how I stealthily carried out my covert operation to obtain the contraband.

Details to follow in proceeding posts.

  6. Mom, I understand your frustration things like this happen slow with much coordination behind the scenes and then as things progress news spreads like wildfire because of the internet and email. I have been aware of the possibility of this happening back to March 9th but confirmation that this might be go happened for me just yesterday and before you know it the information is published online before the city can make an official release. I agree we need to do better.

Today I received two messages, one from the City Manager informing the Council that the dirt was tested by a third party lab and deemed clean and the other below from the Parks Director.

    Hello Mayor and Council,
I wanted to make sure all of you were aware of the dirt from Chamblee High School potentially being brought into Brook Run. I have agreed to take enough dirt (around 3200 cubic yards) to grade an area 100’x300’ in the back field which we will grass and have available as a multi-use field space. I have soil samples being tested now for any contaminants in the dirt and will revoke the permit if anything comes back on the report. This is a good opportunity for us to be able to cover left over rubble from the hospital demolition and make that area more useable. I have estimated it to take around 350 truckloads to get the dirt in and we will be routing them through the gates on Peeler Rd. to minimize the impact on Park users. Please let me know if you have any questions or if any of your constituents have any concerns.

Council has been raising questions as to the max number of trips per day, time of day, alternating routing options, drainage, random soil testing, weight limits on the roads, public notification and informational meetings once the detils have been flushed out. Unfortunately this is still a work in process but you now know what I know.

Max, I would want public fields scheduled through the Parks Director allowing equal access to informal recreation as well practice locations for community teams that need the space. That being said, I like active recreation and am not sure if this would fall under the no active recreation mandate that was passed into the Master Plan over my objections.

Gary, smoke a fat one for me as I gave those up for adulthood and if you have a garage sale please don't post any signs in the right of way as they are against code.

  7. Trust me John - adulthood only lasts as long as your children are young. Give yourself another eighteen to twenty years and you'll be puffing on a Macanudo again.

Time certainly is swiftly spiraling for me ("Swifter then he that gibbets on the Brewers Bucket"
    — William Shakespeare, Henry IV Part II). I had thought when my children were all young that was when time would finally hold still for me - tempore pergit.

Just make sure you are out of politics before a mid-life crisis hits you. Mine came coetaneous with me getting laid off after over two decades with the same company and it was (still is) a doozie.

After being laid off, my mid-life epiphany wasn't the realization that I was no longer somebody, but that I had never ever been somebody. So, I've been scrambling to make up for lost time - mostly ignoble efforts - but I have no complaints; other than, I really wished this AA chapter served coffee.

But I will tell this, a father couldn't ask for better children than mine. The Indigo Girls have a song, "Galileo", and there is a line in that song that goes, "How long till my soul gets it right...?", well, I do believe that with my son and daughters) that my ancestors would agree that with this progeny, good karma has finally come to fruition.

And I attribute this to mostly to my inverse role-modeling, a system of raising children where they would do anything possible it takes in their lives to keep from ending up like me.

And don't worry, I would be the last one to break the city's garage sale code.

  8. Hey, John, do you know why quite a few trees on Brookhurst Drive have numbered silver tags nailed into them?

If these trees are marked for removal it's really going to destroy the treed ambiance of Brookhurst Drive for at least another quarter century.

Thank-you, oh greatest man to come out of Illinois since Abraham Lincoln!

  9. Your trees are safe Gary, City is just doing an inventory.

  10. John, thank-you, I will let my neighbors know too, as a few of them were curious as well.

But me, I really wasn't worried about the treelined beauty of Brookhurst Drive, as you know what a callous bastard I am (my wife and children always have to plead with me to continue my life insurance policy payments). I just wanted to know if the tagged trees were going to get removed as I was going to transfer the tags from the trees on the front easement to a couple of giant oaks in my backyard that I need felled.

This probably isn't even one of your responsibilities - to investigate and answer this type of inquiry, but I do thank you for your swift reply.
