On this date, October 25th, in 1920, my namesake, Irish playwright and politician Terence MacSwiney died after 74 days on hunger strike in Brixton Prison, bringing the Irish struggle for independence to international attention.
ReplyDeleteMy understanding from one of his recent videos is that Copperhead Hunter - Gary Ray Betz - has at one time in his life denied himself Jameson's Irish Whiskey for 74 days as well in order to bring the struggle for the humane treatment of copperheads to international attention.
I do believe that Gary Ray Betz undertook the more difficult protest. No Jameson Irish Whiskey for 74 days? Oh my gosh, the man's a true martyr for the cause, if not a blooming saint!
Sorry, Terence MacSwiney, I never said that, I haven't the grit to go a day without the blessed succor for my troubled mind and aching heart, but ah, you are a might witty lad at that.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking I met you about 10 years ago at The Local, you went by Terry MacSwiney, and I joked by purposely mispronouncing your surname as "McWienie". I was there with a dazzling billboard blonde and we all talked tangentially, until you and I started arguing about whether Hollis Gillespie's just released book, "Bleachy-Haired Honky Bitch" constituted a work of literature or just a collection of clever memoirs and as the night went on we learned she based one of her book's characters on the pub's bartender.
You then blew everyone away at the karaoke with your cover of Cheap Trick's "Surrender" and somehow I lost sight of you with all the accolades you were receiving the rest of the night.
If that's your real name, and I determine you pose no threat to my daughters, then you are welcome to stop by my home for a wee dram of some of my Jameson Select Reserve Black Barrel or 18 Year Reserve. I was saving these bottles for a wedding or a wake, but since my Dad died, I'm thinking the adage - "there's no time like the present" applies.
Coll has my number, if you still frequent there.
