Quick Dunwoody City Council Meeting where everything was approved as presented and Dunwoody Club Forest was an important topic of discussion.

Short Dunwoody City Council meeting on Monday April 28th with everything on the agenda passed as presented including the SLUP for the home daycare (the minutes from the last meeting were deferred as they were missing from the public packet).

At public comment we were told that 5258 Vernon Lake was approved by the Community Development Department as staff reviewed the plat and concepts provided and determined that the lots are ‘buildable.’ Ericka Harris the President of Dunwoody Club Forest Civic Association has promised to appeal if formally approved.    This matter will come in front of the City Council at some point.

Macauley+Schmit named new developer for Doraville’s former GM site to create a livable, mixed-use, transit-oriented development.

Mayor Donna Pittman of Doraville

After sitting idle for six years, it appears that the former General Motors site in Doraville has found a new owner. At her annual State of the City address Monday night, Doraville Mayor Donna Pittman announced that the development firm Macauley+Schmit, along with its partner, The Integral Group, has made a commitment to redevelop the 162-acre tract running along I-285.

“We are very excited to be working with a group of developers that support our Livable Communities Initiative (LCI) vision and we look forward to an August closing,” noted Pittman. In the meantime, there is still much work to be done fine-tuning the details of the agreement. “From the creation of a tax allocation district to coordination with county and state entities, our long-range goal is to create a livable, mixed-use, transit-oriented development that will be beneficial to Doraville residents and businesses,” Pittman said.

According to the Macauley+Schmit website, their single objective is to create a sense of balance and harmony in community development in all of their projects – new or revitalized. This is accomplished by taking a holistic view of the social environment, a commitment to intuitive design, a reverence for nature and a focus on the many components that comprise the economics of community. This approach is most successful, they note, when balanced by a combination of marketplace dynamics and public-private partnerships.

The GM assembly plant’s closure in 2008 due to the recession ended a 61-year relationship with Doraville and overnight the city lost 10 percent of its revenue base and 36 percent of its overall employment base.

Other accomplishments for this past year, chronicled in the mayor’s presentation, included the hiring of a new city manager; the addition of more than 300 small businesses over the past two years; the recent creation of a Downtown Development Authority; increased focus on the LCI and design-oriented architectural standards and a major overhaul of city operations and technical capabilities.

The mayor’s keynote address was preceded by presentation of colors by the Dunwoody High School Color Guard and choral selections by the DeKalb School of the Arts song ensemble, Highleit.

Marta's Dunwoody Station - a key factor in economic development.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfVG5XAChVk

Join MARTA's Frank Rodriguez on a tour around the Dunwoody Station as he points out the variety of shopping, hotels, and sights surrounding this popular Perimeter area. The Dunwoody Station sits on the Red Line, a quick walk to the numerous office buildings, Perimeter Shopping Mall and plenty of great restaurants and stores.

The Dunwoody Station is part of the Perimeter Center business district because it serves as a transportation hub for multiple shuttles. Employees can ride a free shuttle to/from the Dunwoody rail station during morning and evening rush hours. Most shuttles operate every 15 minutes, and pick up and drop off on the ground floor of Parking Deck 1.

There are 1,048 parking spaces at the Dunwoody Station and parking is free for up to 24-hours. Customers staying 24-hours or longer will be charged for long-term parking at a rate of $5 for each 24-hour period or part thereof.

MARTA's Police Department uses the Dunwoody Station for its North Precinct. From this station, MPD patrols 14 stations, all the bus routes and 12,000 parking spaces from Civic Center station north to Doraville and North Springs.

In the coming months plans will be released as State Farm creates its regional hub around the station with direct access for their employees.

Dunwoody 2014 Swim Team Schedule - A Tuesday Night Tradition

I lifted the photo above from Rick's Dunwoody Talk Blog - so please repay the favor by checking out his analysis of the upcoming season.

Rick is correct, as per the rules of the Atlanta Swim Association the depth of Dunwoody North's pool is now just below the minimum depth for starting blocks because of a past resurfacing. The team had the option to force all swimmers to start in the water but decided to travel all season so as to not throw off the swimmers who enjoy the starting blocks.

The pool at the Dunwoody North may be corrected this Fall but until then we travel.

Dunwoody explores Tree Canopy Obstacle Course, requests feedback on Spalding, proposed Sr. Living on Old Spring House, new Petco, rezonings and hotels, wild ride and food truck begins.

Would you like to hang out at Brook Run Park a little more this summer?   The City of Dunwoody is exploring options and looking for proposals for a possible Tree Canopy Obstacle Course at Brook Run Park.  No other details except what is on city site.  Thoughts?

I am receiving comments via email on the various intersection proposals for the Chamblee Dunwoody / Spalding Drive intersection.  A meeting with formal presentation took place on Feb 25th and the city staff is still accepting formal comments on which proposal you prefer.  Also take a look at the City of Dunwoody's YouTube page to see four videos of traffic scenarios for the intersection including the one way proposal.

Tuesday the Dunwoody Planning Commission reviews a rezoning on Old Spring House Lane to change land zoned for offices to 120 unit residential complex for Senior Living.

At the Wednesday meeting of the Village Design Review Advisory Committee they are discussing a new sign to be installed in the Dunwoody Hall (Publix's) Shopping Center on Chamblee Dunwoody for what appears to be a new pet store concept by Petco called; "Unleashed for dogs and cats."

At the Thursday morning Sustainability Committee they are discussing a city sustainability plan and possible designated parking for electric vehicles.

At the Thursday evening Community Council meeting they are discussing two possible property rezonings.  The first asks to rezone a piece of property on Crown Point Parkway from a proposed 120 room hotel to instead allow a self storage building in its place.  The second asks to rezone a property on Ashford Dunwoody Road where 257 multifamily residential units are currently allowed and instead allow a 128 room hotel and commercial space for retail or restaurant.
