City of Dunwoody selects Douglas County Administrator Eric Linton as new City Manager

Eric Linton
Dunwoody City Manager

Following a seven-month-long, nationwide search, the Mayor of Dunwoody has selected Eric Linton for the role of City Manager. A vote on his appointment is expected to come before the City Council at its December 8, 2014 meeting.

A review committee comprised of the Mayor, two City Council members and select members of the community, evaluated a list of extraordinarily qualified candidates and narrowed down a group of finalists for the position.

“We conducted a thorough search and ultimately selected Eric from a large list of experienced and extremely talented candidates,” said Dunwoody Mayor Mike Davis. “Eric is a highly skilled public administrator and government services manager with experience at the city and county level. Specifically, we were impressed with his veteran skills in planning, zoning and development as well as his experience with comprehensive planning. I am confident he will be a tremendous asset to our city and the right leader for our exceptional team of employees.”

Mr. Linton is a Credentialed Manager with the International City/County Management Association, a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and is active in the American Planning Association, Georgia Planning Association, the Georgia City-County Management  Association and the Association County Commissioners of Georgia.

“I am excited about the opportunity to serve the citizens of Dunwoody and help implement development and infrastructure improvements in line with community-driven plans and goals,” said Linton. “I grew up just outside the Dunwoody city border and attended Chamblee High School so I   am very familiar with the area’s character, history and tradition. It’s a homecoming for me in a way and I’m looking forward to providing strategic and effective ideas to help the city succeed.”

Mr. Linton is married to Cathy, his wife of 11 years, and together they have one son, Thomas. Mr. Linton holds a Masters in Planning and also a Bachelor of Science in Management, Operations Management, both from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Dunwoody Police Department Christmas for Kids program has kicked off and will be accepting gifts at the Light Up Dunwoody Event on Sunday.

The Dunwoody Police Department Christmas for Kids (CFK) program began in 2009 with the goal of bringing our community together to collect new and unwrapped gifts for Dunwoody’s under-privileged children between the ages of newborn to 15 years old.

Once gifts are collected, the Dunwoody Police Department invites members of the community to join our CFK team for a "Wrap-Up Event" in early December to personalize a bag of individually wrapped gifts for each of the 60 or so children who are honored at a private Christmas party later in the month. Santa himself (along with his Elves and perhaps a Toy Soldier or two!) appears at the private event to spend quality one-on-one time with our honored guests and to distribute the gifts personally.

CFK is unique in that the Christmas party is an intimate affair for the pre-registered children and their parents only. Keeping the party private allows our CFK team to focus only on what’s important – the children and the joys of giving.

Christmas for Kids is a community effort and is only made possible by the generosity of our citizens, businesses, and other local organizations.

Adoption and Foster Care Lunch & Learn - Thursday Nov 20 at Atlanta City Hall

This afternoon I received a phone call from Atlanta City Councilmember Keisha Lance Bottoms regarding a luncheon event that she is holding this Thursday November 20th to speak about adoption opportunities in the community.  November is national adoption month and as Councilmember Bottoms family consists of her husband and four adopted children, she wants to tell her story and help others learn of the adoption process. Please reach out and make reservations to the luncheon if you are interested to 404-330-6054 and/or contact Ms. Bottoms directly at kbottoms@atlantaga.gov.

In doing my research I found the Georgia Department of Human Services adoption page entitled "It's my turn now Georgia" and I was touched at looking at the 169 children that are ready for adoption. If you've ever thought of adoption, please read some of the information provided and visit the page below to scroll through the children.

Pebble Tossers is a great Dunwoody Charity serving all of Atlanta that could use your support.

Pebble Tossers Logo

TOGETHER.
Shape the Future: Start a Ripple of Giving

Dear Friends,

When Pebble Tossers started in 2008, our belief rested on a powerful principle: young people are generally an untapped resource for communities and that youth volunteering is a win-win opportunity, benefiting the community as well as the young people themselves.

We now have 15,000 youth & family volunteers who serve 122 local nonprofits. Additionally, we've launched several youth development and leadership development programs to actively engage kids and teens. Last year, the community impact of their volunteer efforts was valued at $1,183,000.

Pebble Tossers provides local nonprofits with creative solutions utilizing youth volunteers.  It's powerful to watch kids take action; to experience volunteering for the first time and to witness the sparkle in their eye from knowing they made an impact.

This Thursday is Georgia Gives Day, a day supporting all Georgia nonprofits.  I ask you to join thousands of others and donate to nonprofits and, specifically, to Pebble Tossers. As a bonus, your donation will be doubled due to the generosity of our Board of Directors who will match the first $2,500 donated!

We need each one of you reading this email to donate at least $5 - the cost of a cup of coffee! This donation will directly go to the programming of our youth volunteers and will start a huge ripple of giving in Atlanta! You can donate right now or wait until Thursday, but ....

Thanks, your support is greatly appreciated!

Dunwoody Council's Independent Auditor, Mr. William J. Mulcahy gives glowing praise for city's due diligence and transparency.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xzlzeJLNck

As one of the the original council members who started the City of Dunwoody six years ago, I take great pleasure in hearing from an auditor that we are not only doing a wonderful job financially, but we are continuing to improve various procedures in reporting the oversight of the city funds.   Transparency of government operations was one of my goals in originally running for City Council and this type of report just makes me giddy - (yes I am a dork).

Mr. Mulcahy discussed the 3rd quarter City financial report which now includes council expenses on page 5 (but was missing a little back up from what was reported earlier here), he reviewed the Public Works Department and our road paving processes as well as the quality control measures that are in place in ensure the road contractor is giving us a quality project.   He was very pleased with everything he saw and finally he stated that in the 4th quarter he will be reviewing the City's purchasing card transactions.   The video is 14 minutes long and it is worth a watch.

In other related news on transparency, the City released the 11 page, 3rd Qtr Key Performance Indicators report which shows some blistering statistics from the various departments.

For example did you know that the City received 263 open records requests in the just the 3rd quarter alone and will most likely have over 1,000 requests prior to the end of the year.  (I think I need to do an open records request to find who is asking for what and to see if there are duplicate requests that we can just post to the web?)  The 11 pages are filled with numerous tidbits of information for example, our Public Works team made a concerted effort to improve our existing sidewalk network by making 276 sidewalk repairs including replacing cracked or broken sections and grinding down uneven sections to reduce trip hazards.

10 a.m.

We invite you to join your community to commemorate Veterans Day and honor the brave men and women who have served and currently serve in the United States Armed Forces.

Veterans Day is an official United States holiday that honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I (major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect). The United States also originally observed Armistice Day; it then evolved into the current Veterans Day holiday in 1954.
• Get a free haircut. Veterans who visit Great Clips shops on Nov. 11, can either receive a free haircut -- or a card for a free haircut to redeem by Dec. 31.

Brook Run Dog Park - final plan coming to the Dunwoody City Council on Monday.

http://jkheneghan.com/city/meetings/2014/Nov/111002014_Brook_Run_Dog_Park_Update.pdf

Brook Run Dog Park has been an active and popular amenity within Brook Run Park for the past 9 years. The dog park is enjoyed by many dogs and their owners for the natural beauty and shaded areas that it provides. Because of its popularity, the area that the current dog park resides is in need of extensive rehabilitation.

After several months of discussion with park users and the neighboring residents, a plan was submitted to Council in December 2013 to relocate the dog park to another area within Brook Run Park. However, due to funding concerns and public sentiment, Council requested that staff work with the neighbors of Brook Run Park and the Dog Park Board to create a design within the same area of the park that would accommodate both groups.

After meeting with both groups, the attached draft plan was created for Council’s consideration. Staff feels that it meets the majority of the requests from both groups. The dog park will have a 2 acre large dog park and a .25 acre small dog park and will now be 400 feet from the neighbors’ homes to decrease the disruption of barking dogs. Staff will also work with the Brook Run Dog Park Association to remediate erosion within the park after the fences are relocated.

Dunwoody North: a close-knit community, where residents welcome you with brownies.

Dunwoody Reporter highlights the Dunwoody North Community - a great place to live.

“People did the old-fashioned kind of thing of bringing brownies when we moved in,” Kathy Adams-Carter said about her neighborhood, Dunwoody North.  She and her husband wanted to move from their smaller house on Dresden Drive since 2003, when they married, but they didn’t settle on a home until they found the right one in August 2012, Adams-Carter said. She said they wanted a sense of community and a place that was not isolated.  “We are at heart an intowner, not a suburbanite,” she said.  [Any guess who brought the brownies? Answer]

Tucked away and shaded by trees, Dunwoody North provides cool cover and accessibility to nearby shopping and parks, including Brook Run Park, which Adams-Carter said she and her husband can walk to.  “We looked at Smoke Rise [in eastern DeKalb County] and farther out, and it, along with Avondale Estates, felt too isolated,” she said, noting the intown houses were older and more expensive than the house they found in Dunwoody.  “It’s outside the Perimeter, but it’s almost intown,” she said. “I actually grew up about a mile on the other side, and I remember riding the school bus into Dunwoody when it was gravel roads and it really seemed far out.”  When not entertaining their granddaughter, Adams-Carter said she enjoys watching the younger kids skateboarding and riding bikes in the neighborhood.  “We’re still in a diverse neighborhood age-wise,” she said.

Gerri Penn, president of the Dunwoody North Civic Association, said the 1,000-home community is a mature neighborhood with an active civic association, swim and tennis teams, proximity to two schools and Brook Run Park, and a neighborhood watch. “We have a good mix of seniors, middle age and young,” she said.

During the summer, swim team photographer and dad Rob Maxwell says the kids out of school “live at the pool.” He describes the swim meets as “controlled chaos.” His background in art and design allows him to take the pictures the parents can’t get with their iPhones, he said.  When his youngest daughter, Avery, was 5 years old, she climbed the high dive and teetered on the edge of the board, launching into the water before dad could say “No!” Maxwell said. “She’s just a little daredevil. I think she likes the feeling of flying off the board.” The pool is “what summer is to them,” Maxwell said about his three children, ages 11, 13 and 15, and the 100 children in the swim team organization. “It’s very wholesome and Mayberry-esque,” he said.

Lisa Dierks-Unkefer said some of her fondest memories involved playing with her friends at the pool, which she said was built in 1966-67. In 1999, she said she bought the home her parents purchased in 1965, the home where she grew up.  “We were drawn back to this wonderful neighborhood not just because of the location, but because a few of my best friends had also come back,” she said, calling the moving back, “a testament that people who live here love it, and truly care about each other.”

John Heneghan, a member of Dunwoody City Council, said he started a blog as an alternative to a printed newsletter when he was the president of the neighborhood’s homeowner’s association in the early 2000s.  When citizens started seriously considering starting the city of Dunwoody, Heneghan said he worked to keep the Dunwoody North neighborhood united. “Some wanted to set the limit at Tilly Mill Road, which would have meant half the residents would be outside the city limits,” he said. “So, I got involved to help convince the powers that be to move the city to the county line.”

Sam Verniero also involves himself with neighborhood affairs, and though he has only been a resident for five years, he said he has been elected first vice president to the Dunwoody North Civic Association for the past four years, and appointed as a board member to the Dunwoody Community Council, the DeKalb Community Service Board and the Brighter DeKalb Foundation Board.
He said he moved to Dunwoody North for the love of people, neighbors, accessibility, community, civic responsibility, partnership, education, leadership and safety tied to affordability. “The American Dream can be found in the Dunwoody North neighborhood,” Verniero said.
