Last week of early voting at the Dunwoody Library from 8 to 5:30 through Friday

The polls are open the next four days for early voting for Dunwoody Mayor and the at-large City Council races at the Dunwoody Library, through Friday from 8:00 to 5:30 p.m.  Skip the lines on November 5th and vote at your convenience at the Dunwoody library on or before before November 1st.

In case you are not aware, the Dunwoody City Council has made this local early voting opportunity available to you the residents by funding this service through the DeKalb Board of Elections to a tune of $15,000.  We believe this is a wise investment in democracy ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to help decide the future of this fine city.  Other cities in DeKalb opt out of providing this service and we are happy to offer it.

Please research the candidates (in the links down below) and take advantage of this early & local voting opportunity.  For you die hard political wonks out there, you may be interested in the Dunwoody Campaign Finance website to see who is donating to whom and where the candidates are spending those politicial donations.  As far as I know, there are no official polls on where these races are headed, so please go cast your ballot.

The Heneghan's are voting for Lynn Deutsch, Stacey Harris and Heyward Wescott to lead the City of Dunwoody forward.

I recommend that you vote No on the Ethics question as it weakens ethics rules, not improves them.

Dunwoody's Windwood Hollow Park now has sidewalks connecting to Peeler.

Thank you to Dunwoody's Public Works and Parks Departments for installing this important connection piece for all Windwood Hollow park visitors.  Dunwoody parents of small children, if you haven't visited this park, it is truly a hidden gem.

Last year a resident pointed out the need for this sidewalk so I proposed it to the budget committee, and now it is installed.  (The little things that make me smile.)

"This is the seventh year we've thrown this fall event here at the Donaldson-Bannister Farm as our main fundraiser," commented Boys Scout Troop 477 Scoutmaster Barry Deutsch, "and we're so proud of what the boys have done to make this a banner event for the city. This year is very exciting as we get to help showcase the significant improvements that Dunwoody Preservation Trust has accomplished over the past year to make the Farm a destination and a significant historical landmark here in our hometown. We are so proud to be here."

Admission is free and activities range in cost from 50 cents for games to $3 for the tour. Unlimited Game Bracelets are available along with a Family Tour package. So don't miss Dunwoody's favorite fall tradition - or this year you might have to walk the plank! And as always… Costumes are Welcome!

Update by Dunwoody Mayor Shortal - Last Food Truck Thursday is this week with music by Yacht Rock & costume contest for kids.

Good morning my fellow citizens in the great city of Dunwoody, The following are some items of interest …

1. Truck or Treat … This is our annual Dunwoody City Halloween Party. It takes place this Thursday, OCT 24, at Brook Run Park starting at 5 PM until 9 PM. It is also the last "Food Truck Thursday" of the year. Bill Grossman and his team will have a great line up of food trucks to fit everyone’s taste buds. Come dressed in your Halloween costume as there will be prizes for all ages. Our Dunwoody Police will be on hand with some of their equipment and they may have a few safety reflectors, etc. to hand out. We have a great band to entertain … "The Yacht Rock Schooner” … and with a name like that you know they are going to be good. To top all that the weather is going to perfect … 67 degrees at the start with clear skies and hardly any wind. So come early in costume, eat hardy, bring your dancing shoes and be prepared for a great evening with your fellow citizens.

2. Austin Redistricting Meeting … The second in a series of three meetings on the redistricting of the new Austin School will take place tonight night, OCT 23, starting at 7 PM at DHS. The first meeting last month was well organized by the DCSS and the conduct of our citizens that attended was very respectful. Come prepared to offer some thoughtful input. The third meeting in this series will take place on NOV 20.

3. DES 10th Anniversary … One of our many great schools, Dunwoody Elementary School, will be celebrating it's 10th anniversary of the school this Saturday, OCT 26, with a “Fall Festival.” There will be food, games, contest, and even a baking contest. The event is from 10 AM to 2 PM. There will be celebrities on hand … stage star Councilwoman Pam Tallmadge, Coach Mike “Vince Lombardi” Nash of DHS fame and the amazing Matt Weber, Co-founder of the world famous podcast “What’s Up Dunwoody.”

4. Speaking of DHS Football … Congratulations to Coach Nash and the DHS football players for a thrilling come from behind victory last Friday night. The team has come a long way in the last few years since Coach Nash arrived at DHS. He is an asset to our city. The team has started the beginning of a winning tradition. We are proud of therm!

5. Boy Scouts’ Halloween Festival … This is another one of the many outstanding Halloween events over this coming weekend. This event billed as the “Haunted Farm Tour” will take place at the bootiful Donaldson Bannister Farm this Saturday, OCT 26, from 3 PM to 9 PM. The event is the work of our own Dunwoody Boy Scout Troop 477. Among the events will be a petting zoo, games, crafts and s’mores … wow, s’mores count me in/!

6. Softball Game … This annual fun game of friendly competition between Dunwoody and Doraville will take place this coming Friday, OCT 25, starting at 1 PM. The location is our Dunwoody Baseball Fields, Brook Run Park. This is the fourth year for this game with Doraville winning the first two games and Dunwoody came back to bring the trophy home last year. Come out and cheer on the team. There is also a raffle with some outstanding prizes.

7. Dunwoody Nature Center (DNC) Election Day Camp … NOV 5 is election day and it is also a day that the schools will be closed. To put a spin on the day the leadership at the DNC will have a one day Election Day Camp appropriately titled “ Vote for Nature.” The camp is open for children from age 4 through the 5th grade. Come enjoy a day of “all things nature.”
For more information go to this link to register … Use this link to register.

8. Townhall Meeting … My last Townhall meeting will take place on NOV 19 from 7 PM to 8:30 PM. The location will be our Dunwoody City Hall. I am going to rap up the last 11 years as to where we came from, where we are today and where I expect us to go in the future. There will be an emphasis on fiscal stewardship, physical plant, recreation, safety and citizenry. I will leave plenty of time for Q & A. Look forward to seeing you all there.

9. Brook Run Park Construction … If you have been at Brook Run Park lately you will notice there has been a lot of progress. If Mother Nature cooperates with good weather we anticipate a spring, 2020 completion. The project is being paid for with internal funds … there is no debt or bonds.

10. National Drug Take Back Day … Our Dunwoody Police Department with be participating in this National Event this Saturday, OCT 26, from 10:00 AM to 2 PM at the Police Station located in Dunwoody City Hall. They will be accepting expired and unwanted prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications. They will also accept vaping and e-cigarettes devices if the batteries are remove. Getting these items out of our homes is an important safety factor especially those of us with children.

11. Elections … November Election … Early voting started on Monday, OCT 14 and the hours of operation are 8 AM to 5:30 PM Monday thru Friday. There is NO weekend Early Voting hours in this election. The closes location for us to early vote is our Dunwoody Library. Application for Absentee Voting can be submitted now but ballots will not be sent out until OCT 14. To get an Absentee Ballot Application got to this site…. https://sos.ga.gov/admin/uploads/absentee_ballot_app_201431.pdf  …. You can mail your filled out Absentee Ballot Application to, DeKalb County (DC) Registration and Elections, 4380 Memorial Dr, Suit 300, Decatur, GA 30032 or email your application to absenteeballot@dekalbcountyga.gov or fax it in to 404-298-4038. DC Elections is very good at getting your ballot sent back to you quickly. When you get your ballot follow the directions and when filled out mail it back in the envelope provided. Folks at every election I strongly encourage every American to vote. There can be some last minute emergencies that would interfere with a person voting but those are few and far between … I just don’t understand why we don’t have at least 90% of our citizens voting at each election. Our privilege to vote has been paid for by the blood, sweat and courage of millions of American Men and Women that preserve this privilege for all of us. From me to all of you … Please vote!

12. Election Ballot … You ballot will have three contested elected positions … For Mayor … Terry Nall and Lynn Deutsch; For District 1 At Large … Robert Miller and Stacy Harris; and for District 2 At Large … Heyward Wescott and Joe Seconder. This is a city wide election so every registered voter in Dunwoody can vote for all three positions. John Heneghan is running unopposed. There is one “Special Election” issue on the ballot concerning DeKalb Board of Ethics that is extremely important. It read “Shall the Act be approved which revises the Board of Ethics for DeKalb County.” I strongly urge you to vote “NO” on this issue. The rise in ethical standards in DeKalb County has made large progress in the last few years. Passing this election issue would regress us back to the days that we want to leave behind us as a County.

13. That is all for today. Please pass this on to your friends, neighbors and members of your HOA. If anyone wants to be added to my email list just let me know. Request everyone keep your email address updated with me if you wish to continue receive my updates. Thanks for all each of you do to make us a city with a family atmosphere. Let’s all work to create the mutual respect that everyone deserves! See you around town!

Let Us Continue to Build Our City Together!

The Heneghan's are voting for Lynn Deutsch, Stacey Harris and Heyward Wescott to lead the City of Dunwoody forward. #GaPol

Having the pleasure of serving on the Dunwoody City Council for the last 11 years has given me the unique experience of witnessing a behind the scenes view on those currently running for Mayor as well as opportunities to work closely with the various leaders in the community willing to run for the vacant city council positions. With this election the dynamics of the council will shift, elections have consequences and leadership matters. Vote wisely.

Every Dunwoody citizen will be able to vote for the city-wide elected seats as well as vote on an ethics referendum, which may sound positive on the surface but is really a wolf in sheep's clothing, therefore, I am recommending that you vote no. Finally, the polls are already open for early voting at the Dunwoody Library, Monday - Friday from 8:00 to 5:30 so skip the lines on November 5th and vote at your convenience at the library prior to November 1st.

Lynn Deutsch for Mayor of Dunwoody

I have been a huge fan of Lynn Deutsch for many years, going back to her service working with the DeKalb School System. In 2009, when staffing the first Planning Commission, which is the committee that sees all zoning applications prior to their arrival to the City Council. I nominated Lynn to be my Planning Commissioner as she was the most qualified and dedicated person I could find as she has bachelor's degrees in government and journalism as well as a master's degree in City Planning from Georgia Tech.

Eight years ago, when Lynn decided to run for City Council, I broke from my usually stoic stance of not endorsing any candidates in order to endorse her for City Council. At that time being responsible to assist in leading this city forward, I saw the need to recommend Lynn over her opponent and for just the second time in 11 years, I am again breaking from my shell to inform you that I believe Lynn Deutsch's vision of progressive change mirrors that of myself and that I along with Kristin will be voting for Lynn to be the next Mayor of Dunwoody.

Stacey Harris for City Council District 1

Kristin and I have known Stacey Harris for over 10 years - through kids' activities as well as involvement in numerous community organizations. Stacey and I have sat in countless meetings together both working to make a Dunwoody a better community. Whereas I have always been on the city council, Stacey has been involved with many volunteer boards, including her current position on the Zoning Board of Appeals. Her leadership with the Dunwoody Homeowners Association was instrumental in continuing great Dunwoody traditions such as Light Up Dunwoody and 4th of July parade, and she also collaborated with Red Bird Events and the city to begin Food Truck Thursdays.

We all have kids in Dunwoody schools, and we know Stacey will continue to advocate and collaborate with other groups to push for progress in our schools. As past President of the Dunwoody Homeowners Association, I also know Stacey has a common-sense approach to development in our city. We've seen her question land use attorneys and developers to ensure their plans are the best for the community.

Most importantly, we know Stacey is a leader in our community with a strong desire to actively contribute to making Dunwoody a better place to live and work. The main leadership qualities I see in Stacey after numerous meetings with her are her ability to collaborate with others, followed closely by her integrity, commitment and passion. Kristin and I have enjoyed a friendship with her and Jack for a decade and we look forward to working even closer together in the near future.

Heyward Wescott for City Council District 2

I have also known Heyward Wescott for over 10 years. I met him soon after I got on the Council and recognized he cared deeply about Dunwoody and cared how we were going to make our new city thrive. One of the reasons why I am supporting Heyward is that I have watched him be very engaged in our community for the past two decades. He served on his swim & tennis club board as President and helped them raise their renovated clubhouse. Lemonade Days didn't have a dunk tank until Heyward came along. He thought it would be a great opportunity to raise funds for the Dunwoody Preservation Trust, and he convinced all of the Council to sit in the tank on a very cold spring day. The event raised over $3,000 to help the Dunwoody Preservation Trust. He has always wanted every organization in our community to thrive. Heyward is a leader in the business community and he cares about Dunwoody in many ways that I do. He is very approachable and helps starts community dialog on important issues that affect our community.

This summer I reached out to Heyward because we have a Dunwoody Police officer that lives in Dunwoody with his family. I thought it would be a neat idea if our swim clubs could discount their memberships for officers that live in our community. The next time I heard back from Heyward, he had presented the idea to the Kingsley Racquet & Swim Club board. Not only did he take that idea and run with it, but they expanded on it too. They approved waving all initiation fees ($1,200) for all first responders and active military who live in the community. He also just recently help form the Dunwoody Police Foundation.

In closing ...

Dunwoody is now over 10 years old, and we've seen a lot of community growth therefore our vision of Dunwoody needs to also expand with the needs of that community. We need continued stable leadership on the Council to help make our community the best place to live and raise a family.

Lynn Deutsch is our choice for Mayor, and Stacey & Heyward would be great additions to the City Council, therefore Kristin and I will be voting for this block to ensure that well thought out, sustainable, progressive change happens.

Thanks

John & Kristin Heneghan

Bring your favorite lawn chair or a blanket and join your neighbors for a free community tailgate featuring college football on the big screen at the tree lined lawn along the parkway outside Marlow’s Tavern and Karen Cannon Realtors. Presented by these businesses, Regency Centers and Town Square Collaborative, the first Dunwoody Community Tailgate will be held on October 19 from 1:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. and will showcase college football on an outdoor big screen LCD TV. The featured game will be the University of Georgia against the Kentucky Wildcats (Time 6 p.m.), as well as other fan favorites based on the day’s broadcast schedule.

“We were looking for a way to partner with the community and to highlight this great greenspace right on Dunwoody Village Parkway,” said Andre Koleszar, Senior Vice President/Market Officer for Regency Centers. “Karen Cannon, Trey Beasley from Marlow’s Tavern, and Alan Mothner of Town Square Collaborative brought us this idea and we jumped on the chance to host what we hope will become a great, annual community event.”

Discussion of Public Art

Dunwoody asks legal council, When is a sign a sign and could it be considered public art? Can art be regulated by calling it a sign?

If bogus signs were installed on Dunwoody streets, would they be illegal signage or could they be considered public art? When public art is installed but it looks like a sign, could it be confused for a sign and therefore subject to the sign ordinance?

The Dunwoody City Council is being petitioned by the Create Dunwoody group (Arts Council) to define the difference of art vs signage as the last attempt fell flat.

Interesting true story from the past, back in 2012 I noticed several adopt a road signs around Dunwoody from DeKalb County honoring "Kramer" (from the Seinfeld tv show) and I wasn't sure if they were real or fiction?

I didn't really care one way or another but as it turned out there once was a resident do gooder, filled out the application as Kramer to clean Mt. Vernon, did the work and got the sign.  That person moved away, stopped cleaning Mt. Vernon road and the sign came down.  When a newer sign popped up near the JCC at that time, I investigated and it was deemed unauthorized and even fraudulent (possible public art?).

Can you guess which sign above is not in Dunwoody?

The first sign from the left was newly installed in 2012 and was located just to the North of the JCC entrance on Tilly Mill; there was no permit attached to the back and the sign was removed as possibly being bogus.  The middle sign comes directly from the TV Show, Seinfeld where Kramer joins the “adopt a highway” program, but his methods are a little unorthodox.  The third sign was located on Mount Vernon, East of Chamblee Dunwoody Rd across from the Dunwoody Farmhouse and it had a permit sticker identifying it was authorized and installed in September 2008.  Though one time legal the adopted parent of the road had moved away, therefore the sign was removed.

The Create Dunwoody group wants to start doing murals and art installations and needs some clarification and hopefully, we can do that soon.

R.I.P. Chris Holland of Dunwoody, GA

Chris was a friend of mine and a devoted father to two fifteen-year-old Dunwoody High School girls (lovingly refered by Chris as Frick & Frack) who could usually be found supporting Sarah & Ella in thier soccer endevors, be it on the Dunwoody High School Girls team or other soccer fields.
He will be missed by all who knew him.

William Christopher “Chris” Holland of Dunwoody, GA passed away on October 8, 2019 at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, October 14 at Crowell Brothers Funeral Home, 5051 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Peachtree Corners, GA. Visitation will follow from 2:30 – 5:00pm.

Chris was born January 28, 1971 in Raleigh, NC to William and Janet (Harris) Holland. The family moved to Dunwoody, GA in 1985, where Chris remained. For the past 34 years Chris has been an integral part of the community where he grew up, married, raised his children and owned a successful landscaping business. He was a fan of the classics: cars, music and movies.

Chris was a devoted husband, friend, son and brother. The role of father, however, was his greatest joy. On any given day Chris could be found on the sidelines of a soccer field supporting his girls. While his physical presence will be missed every day, we know that Chris will always be cheering the loudest.

Chris is survived by his wife of 19 years, Jennifer (Streeter) Holland and their two 15-year-old daughters, Sarah and Ella Holland. He is also survived by his parents Janet and Bill Holland of Pendergrass, GA, grandfather, Emmett Harris of Chatham, VA, brother, Jon Holland (and wife Adrienne) of Suwanee, GA, and sister, Allison Holland of Duluth, GA.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association at www.heart.org, the Duke Health System at www.giving.dukehealth.org or Emory University Cardiology Center by emailing makeagift@emoryhealthcare.org. Many years ago, I had the pleasure of being part of a small group of people who helped formulate the ideas and future of the City of Dunwoody. I assisted with preliminary transportation issues that the new city might be facing and had a committee of dedicated and knowledgeable civil engineers, one of whom was Richard Drake. I hold Dick in the highest regard as he was a determined, pragmatic, intellectual man with a clever wit and a quick sense of humor who continued his service on various city committees until his untimely passing last week.

Reading his obituary, Dick led a full life and will be sorely missed.

Services are Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019, at 1 pm at St Barnabas Anglican Church, 4795 N Peachtree Rd, Dunwoody, GA 30338
