At this time, the anticipated start date for the Dunwoody Police Department is April 1, 2009. Almost all employees will be hired near the first week of March in order to provide ample opportunity for training.

There are some of us that do have some questions regarding the police budget, including but not limited to the budget, RFPS and salary comparisons. The below letter has been sent to the Mayor and Councilepersons, but none have thus far replied. What are they hiding?


    Honorable Mayor Wright and City of Dunwoody City Council members

    I write today as a concerned city of Dunwoody resident. I first however would like to thank each and everyone of you for your dedication and hard work with respects to the city initiative and for putting yourselves in the public spectrum subject to both praise and criticism. While many of us praise your good work, many of us are concerned with the proposed budget as it relates to the police department. I am frankly amazed to see that the budget allocation for this area of government has doubled from the estimate provided by Citizens for Dunwoody and the the Carl Vincent institute. In the information sessions leading up to the vote for city hood we were presented, typically led by Mr. Wittenstein, with an outline for a city and appropriate budget. The original estimate for the PD was $2.5 million dollars; this became $3.5 after the police task force was completed and published. Today we see a budget of nearly $5.7 million dollars.


    First and foremost, we would like to see a complete breakdown of the budget line items for FY 2009, as well as any projections for 2010. It is in the tax payers interest to understand how this department, which will utilize 42% of the budget, will be using this money, nearly $5.7 million ! It is of particular interest to some of open, ongoing or closed RFP's with respect to 911 service, jailing, squad cars, rental space and salaries. We are not here to be an agitant to the council, the Chief of Police or the department. We simply want to understand how this department has doubled in size, financially.

    As far as the man/womanpower being staffed, what methodology was used to establish this threshold? Please also let us know what municipalities were used to compare and thus establish salary requirements. In regards to take home cars, I see that the Chief has set a potential mileage max of 25- 30 miles to the officers home, what was the methodology for establishing? What are the 5 year total-cost-of-ownership figures for take home vs pool cars factoring in all cost?

    I am confident in the cities ability to provide this information in a timely fashion. If you choose to provide this study on the official Dunwoody city website, all the better. I was unable, to my surprise, to find an email for Chief Grogan, please feel free to share with him.
