Several Dunwoody Swim / Tennis Clubs are looking to make membership easier for first responders. Can your club do the same?

The City of Dunwoody is made up of various communities, some are neighborhoods, some are apartment complexes, we have religious institutions, and then there are large scale recreation / social clubs like the Jewish Community Center and the Dunwoody Country Club.  Everyone needs community, and for many of us, that means a membership to one of the many local swim tennis clubs spread throughout our various neighborhoods.

Recently a Dunwoody Police Officer purchased a home in our fair town for his wife and growing family.  I am overjoyed when this occurs as I believe it makes our community stronger by having first responders who serve our community, living among us.  I offered him my congratulations, offered to answer any questions that any new resident might need to know, and even offered my wife to talk to his wife to answer her questions.

I then remembered how tough it typically was for a young couple buying their first home and the many expenses that come with it.  The expensive needs sometimes come before the wants, therefore immediately joining a neighborhood swim tennis club where there is usually an initiation fee of maybe $500 along with the annual dues of another $500 is a tough nut to crack.

I mentioned this circumstance to my friend Heyward Wescott to bounce the situation off him, and he suggested that maybe the Kingsley Racquet and Swim Club could offer free initiation to first responders and active duty military.  This would cut the cost in half for year one and then moving forward, they would be a valuable asset to the community organization.

Kingsley Racquet and Swim Club has already made this idea a reality, with others exporing the idea, can your club do the same?  Please reach out to your board to see if this small token of gratitude can be offered to honor their service.  Thanks

"You honor us through your commitment to our communities and country. We would like to express our gratitude by offering all First Responders, Active Duty Military, and Reserve men and women 100% off new member initiation fees.   Thank you for your service!"  Kingsley Racquet & Swim

Dunwoody Memorial Day Service, Brook Run Park, 4770 N. Peachtree Rd, Monday, May 27, 10:00 AM

The City of Dunwoody will host its Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 27th from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at Brook Run Park's Veterans Memorial (4770 N. Peachtree Road, Dunwoody). We hope you will join us for this special Dunwoody tradition as we honor soldiers who sacrificed everything for our freedom.

As a side note, this is an event for the entire family, and I encourage families to bring their children to the ceremony to learn the meaning of sacrifice and service.  Today with many other area Boy Scouts my 13-year-old son Declan placed 100's of flags in front of the graves at Marietta National Cemetery which was an eye-opening experience for him and he now looking forward to the event on Monday.

We all need to be reminded and thankful for those who have sacrificed their tomorrows for the many privileges we enjoy today.  Please join us in the park for an hour, the ceremonty starts at 10 a.m.  Thanks

City of Dunwoody proposes ordinance targeting discrimination and hate crimes. #gapol

http://jkheneghan.com/city/meetings/2019/May/Dunwoody_NonDiscrimination_HateCrime_Ordinance.pdf

The mission of the City of Dunwoody is to provide the highest quality of life for those who live, work, or play in our community and to foster an environment where business can prosper. We will serve all stakeholders in a transparent manner with resourceful, efficient, progressive, and professional leadership.

As City Council members, we serve a very diverse community of residents, businesses, employees, and customers of those businesses. As a community, we are a melting pot of races, colors, religions, genders, national origins, sexual orientations, ages, disability, marital, and family statuses. We as human beings are all equals. Unfortunately, case law is not entirely settled in this area and in the eyes of the State of Georgia as well as the Federal Government there are not equal protections of the law against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

This discrimination has both an economic and human cost to our society, therefore, I, along with Councilwoman Pam Tallmadge propose protections against discrimination for employment, housing or the provision of goods and services for those in our community whom state and federal law does not provide equal protection.

We as a city should let it be known that we stand not only for equality but against all forms of hate therefore in this proposal, we have included language whereby the Dunwoody Police Department will develop guidelines for the identification, investigation, documentation, and reporting of hate crimes committed within the corporate limits of the City of Dunwoody. We will also train our staff, start collecting standardized data and then report such data to the FBI. Our police department already does a beautiful job in fostering a sense of community where hate is not tolerated, but I have already reached out organizations like the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center to see if they can assist us in fostering the message of tolerance within our community and ending hate.

The cities of Atlanta, Chamblee and Doraville have recently passed similar non-discrimination legislation and when an active & engaged Dunwoody resident asked what we were doing to protect his family, Pam and I reviewed the background laws and ordinances of Dunwoody and the other cities, we reviewed our internal EEOC and non-discrimination policies, we have discussed the issue with staff including community development, legal, economic development, as well as the police department; and only after being fully vetted have we decided to put forward this proposal for Council consideration.

Our proposed anti-discrimination ordinance is straight forward whereby an aggrieved person may file a complaint with the City Clerk alleging discrimination against a holder of a business license.  After a legal review determines that there are no other legal remedies being offered under Federal or State Law, it which starts a process of non-binding mediation between the two parties and if not successfully settled in mediation, a hearing officer will adjudicate the matter on the evidence provided. Once a finding is determined, the mediator or hearing officer’s fees shall be assessed to the non-prevailing party. Parties adversely affected by the final decision regarding the complaint may appeal to the Superior Court of DeKalb County. The maximum penalty of the first violation is $500.

We believe that this proposed City ordinance fosters equal treatment by upholding the values of equality, inclusion, and diversity for all within the City of Dunwoody and though it does not replace Federal or State Law, it is a start in the right direction.

As we approach the end of the 2018-2019 school year, we have a lot to talk about. No speeches here … let’s discuss what’s going on.

What’s going on? Off the top of my head, E-SPLOST projects are running out of money, the school district is squeezing more and more children into our schools and the school district will be asking for a loan of up to $250 million soon.

Furthermore, the Dunwoody, Chamblee, Brookhaven and Doraville areas will see some redistricting over the next few years as new schools come online.  Come one, come all. I will also invite various representatives from our other local governments to join us.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFv_uxVNk-k

Graduating seniors from across Georgia have been recognized as 2019 Georgia Scholars, State School Superintendent Richard Woods announced today.

Through the Georgia Scholar program, the Georgia Department of Education identifies and honors high school seniors who have achieved excellence in school and community life. Students eligible for Georgia Scholar recognition are high school seniors who exhibit excellence in all phases of school life, in community activities, and in the home.

Each Georgia Scholar receives a seal for his or her diploma.

“The 2019 Georgia Scholars exemplify our mission of educating the whole child,” Superintendent Woods said. “They are well-rounded students who have engaged with a wide array of educational opportunities – from traditional classroom learning to community service. I congratulate each of these students and wish them well as they embark on their next steps after high school.”

The program is coordinated by GaDOE’s Excellence Recognition office and through local coordinators in each public school system and private schools throughout the state.

People Magazine - Jill Biden Reveals How She and Husband Joe 'Rebuilt Our Family' After Tragedy in New Memoir

Time Magazine - Jill Biden: Why Joe Had to Propose 5 Times Before I Said Yes—And What Finally Changed My Mind

"How did you get this number?" Those were the first words Jill Biden spoke to U.S. Senator Joe Biden when he called her out of the blue to ask her on a date.

Growing up, Jill had wanted two things: a marriage like her parents'―strong, loving, and full of laughter―and a career. An early heartbreak had left her uncertain about love, until she met Joe. But as they grew closer, Jill faced difficult questions: How would politics shape her family and professional life? And was she ready to become a mother to Joe's two young sons? She soon found herself falling in love with her three "boys," learning to balance life as a mother, wife, educator, and political spouse. Through the challenges of public scrutiny, complicated family dynamics, and personal losses, she grew alongside her family, and she extended the family circle at every turn: with her students, military families, friends and staff at the White House, and more.

This is the story of how Jill built a family―and a life―of her own. From the pranks she played to keep everyone laughing to the traditions she formed that would carry them through tragedy, hers is the spirited journey of a woman embracing many roles. Where the Light Enters is a candid, heartwarming glimpse into the creation of a beloved American family, and the life of a woman at its center.

Jill Biden is a community college professor and served as Second Lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017. During the Obama-Biden administration, she advocated for military families, community colleges, the fight against cancer, and the education of women and girls around the world. She continues this work today through the Biden Foundation, the Biden Cancer Initiative, and the Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children. Dr. Biden is married to Vice President Joe Biden.

Electric scooters arrived in a Dunwoody Park and I had a glorious ride around the Brook Run Trail. Bring on the @limebike @BirdRide @JUMPbyUber to Dunwoody, Ga.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVefPG-_EPQ

I had a glorious Saturday morning and I hope you enjoyed yours as well!  Trying to keep my body from falling apart, Saturday is my dedicated, (try real hard not to miss), 7 a.m. Endurance Ride at Cyclebar Dunwoody where the class is a 75 min long, music thumping, heart pumping/calorie burning struggle to kick my own ass.  I usually succeed.   If you ever want to join me, the first class is free - just reach out.

Next stop is usually Starbucks for my morning coffee to cool down to get caught up on e-mails, news, and social media.  Sometimes it's the Village but this morning I hit up the shop on Chamblee Dunwoody & 285.  Sitting there on a stool still dripping with sweat, a father and teenage son come over asking if I was Heneghan?  I quickly popped up to introduce myself and chat city business.  Though the son was wearing Concorde Soccer gear and a Dunwoody High ball cap, they were unaware of the two new artificial turf soccer fields being constructed over at Brook Run Park, but they were completely overjoyed at the news.  They appreciated the conversation, thanked me for the service and I let them know that I appreciated the fact that they allow me to serve the community!

As I sat in Starbucks, Facebook lit up telling me that Dunwoody Councilwoman Lynn Deutsch was live streaming the Dunwoody Farmers Market and introducing all of the vendors.  As I was about to head in that direction, someone tagged me in a tweet concerning ongoing troublesome intersection at for pedestrians and especially runners at Nandina and Mount Vernon as the drivers like to believe that the stop sign there doesn't apply to them.  I had dealt with this complaint previously and after asking for a full engineering study for improving the safety, we figured clearing the vegetation so the cars approaching the stop sign could see the pedestrians might effect positive change along with police enforcement.  After today's near miss, it looks like more needs to be done and I will be discussing with Public Works other options like a stop bump or a raised crosswark.  After some back and forth on Twitter with a promise to follow up, I was off to Brook Run to check out the Farmers Market.

The Farmers Market is a great addition to the community with numerous vendors selling baked goods, prepared foods, fresh produce, honey, meats, cheeses, coffee, juices as well as a few craft and candle sellers.  Today the visitors were entertained by the musical stylings of Mr. Alex Gordon and there was free face painting too (but the line was a little long for me as there might have been just one person in line.  Maybe next time?)  As I checked out the various booths, I saw numerous people I knew walking around, lots of neighbors from my Dunwoody North community located directly across the street from the park, council members, people heavily involved in the community like Alan Mothner, Adrienne Duncan and Susan Wittenstein, people with dogs out on their walk, lots of strollers and little kids dressed in their finest soccer apparel.  I talked to vendors like Shelly at Pastry Shells who just informed me that she is now being featured by Crate & Barrel, and Matt at Press Blend Squeeze who is about to open another store and Tina Walden of who is looking forward to selling her artwork at the Dunwoody Art Festival next week.  After making my rounds, it was time to make a few purchases and looking back at my choices, I think I need to learn to not to go grocery shopping on an empty stomach after working out.  My wife loves Great Harvest Bread, so two loaves of bread were the first items in my bag, followed by one of Shelly's cookies, I then bought my Indian crafted lunch items including a spicy green chili chutney to top Spinage samosas.  Walking around with low blood sugar, I then sampled a few snacks and cakes - purchasing way too many sweets.  Lesson learned?

As I was talking to various neighbors, a friend mentioned that there were electric scooters over at Pernosal Park and asked if they were legally allowed?  We quickly discussed the problems of scooters left haphazardly on sidewalks in Atlanta and that some communities were outlawing them but I informed her that in Dunwoody we haven't seen them, nor are they a problem, therefore, we were not going to regulate them until it makes sense to do so.  I informed my friend that I was in favor of the scooters and could see them as a tool for last mile connectivity.  I especially see the benefit in Perimeter Center & Marta for short trip transportation as well as at the parks for entertainment.  Since the Lime scooters were there, I needed to test them.  I pulled up the Lime app, registered and had access to the scooter within minutes.  I jumped on and then decided to ride the entire three-mile trail to test drive the scooter.  I was impressed, the driving was smooth for my 6 ft 4 in frame weighing 250 lbs and the scooter moved quite quickly except for the steepest hills where I think I actually heard the scooter crying.  The entire loop (I shortcut the section around the playground), included stops along the way to talk to Lynn Deutsch and some Mormon Missionaries (they always impress me.) took about 30 mins and cost $6.10.    I hope to see more.

City update by Dunwoody Mayor Denis Shortal - Food Truck Thursday's at Brook Run kick off tonight.

Greetings my fellow citizens … the following are some items of interest …

1. Food Truck Thursday … The first Food Truck Thursday of 2019 is tonight, May 2. This is a big one! We will be celebrating our 10th anniversary as a city. The times are 5 - 9 PM and the weather is forecast to be beautiful. So, bring the whole Family, your chairs/blankets and aptitude for good food and a fun time and come on over. Our water feature will also be running for the little ones to enjoy plus there will be a few other surprises. Music is by the Tribute and they will sound a lot like the Allman Brothers. Don’t miss this one!

2. Stage Door Players (SDP) … Proudly presents “Murder in the Vineyard” a Murder Mystery Dinner this Saturday at the Donaldson-Bannister Farm from 6:30 - 10 PM. The Farm is located at the intersection of  Chamblee Dunwoody Rd and Vermack Rd. Yes, you can be part of the detective group in this event which will be led by our own SDP Artistic Director Robert Egizio. 2018 Dunwoody Idol winner Josie James will entertain during the cocktail hour and the catering is by Dunwoody's Marlowe’s Tavern. For tickets call 770-396-1726 Ext 5 or click here Murder in the Vineyard Tickets. All funds go to support the SDP Arts. For you dudes still looking for a Mother’s Day gift there is a raffle item you will not want to miss out on.

3. Dunwoody Farmer’s Market … Annual “Grand Opening” will be this Saturday, May 4, at Brook Run Park. Hours are 8:30 AM - 1200 PM. Speaking on markets, Nel’s fruit and vegetable stand had its annual opening last week. It is located next to Chick-fil-A on Jett Ferry Rd. It is open Monday thru Saturday.

4. Paving … the 2019 paving is moving along smartly … we have 30 of the 57 streets on this years paving list already paved. There will be a lull in our paving until about mid-June when we will finish the rest of the streets.

5. Sink Holes … We have had a few sink holes lately. The causes are various. If you see one during normal working report it immediately to our Public Works Dept. at 678-382-6800. If it happens during non-working hours report it via our Public Works emergency Ph # 678-382-6850.

6. Security … I have mentioned this several times. Please don’t leave anything of value in view in your car. If you do you’re going to become a statistic. Remember it takes the bad guys less than 15 seconds to break into your car. Ladies, when you are shopping, DO NOT leave your purse and/or wallet in your shopping cart as you shop. If you do, sooner or later you will become a statistic. Vigilance is required to prevent these things happening to you or a family member, friend, etc..

7. Brook Run Park … The park is open and will remain open but major construction enhancements are in progress. With good weather, we hope to have the construction complete by DEC 31, 2019. We have completed the resurfacing of the playground in Brook Run Park so the kids can play at Food Trucks tonight.

8. Stream Clean-up … The stream clean-up on APR 13 was a success but we could have used more volunteers. We started at the new trail bridge over Nancy Creek and finish at I-285. We picked up two truckloads of trash of all shapes and sizes. Thanks to all those that volunteered!

9. Lemonade Days and Monarchs and Margaritas … Both of these events were huge successes and are outstanding examples of community spirit building events. All the funds raised go directly into enhancing the Donaldson-Bannister Farm from Lemonade Days and Dunwoody Nature Center from Monarchs and Margaritas. Thanks to the folks at Dunwoody Preservation Trust for running Lemonade Days and the folks at Dunwoody Nature Center for running Monarchs and Margaritas. Thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed themselves. If you missed it this year next year don’t miss Dunwoody Idol … you will see some real talented young singers. Who needs America Idol when we have Dunwoody Idol in our own park!

10. Dunwoody Arts Festival … This popular event will be on May 11 and 12 in Dunwoody Village.

11. I have to run … more in a few days. Please pass this on to your friends, neighbors and members of your HOA. If anyone wants to be added to my email list just let me know. Thanks for all each of you do to make us a city with a family atmosphere. Let’s all work to create the mutual respect that everyone deserves! See you around town!

Custom Cakes & Cookies by Dunwoody's own - Pastry Shells

I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting Shelly several times in the last year, be it the Dunwoody Farmers Market (opens this Saturday) where she usually has a booth or most recently at Lemonade Days where I was once again able to sample her hand decorated cookies. Shelly has given up the corporate world to follow her passion to bake cookies and cakes in Dunwoody and based on her many accolades (and photos on Instagram) it looks like she is quite successful, therefore I wanted to share her story. John
Hey!  I’m Shelly, a true Atlantian (born and raised inside the perimeter) now living in Dunwoody, hot chocolate drinker, animal lover, obsessed with all things pink, oh, also I’m an engineer.  I graduated from college with an engineering degree, however, I felt as if something was missing… my true passion has always been for baking, so I started Pastry Shells!

Baking was always a part of my life growing up baking pies with my Dad and helping bake biscuits with my Mom, and it brought me so much joy!  It was a simple choice to take something I loved and turn it into a business.  I spent seven years baking wedding cakes and cookies after I got home from my day job.  Finally, in 2017, I quit!  Now I get to work on my passion every day and I love every second!

Oh, and I would love to be a part of your next event!
