Please mark your calendar for a recurring monthly family-friendly event: Announcing the inaugural Monthly Community Bike Ride in Dunwoody (aka “Dunwoody Sunday Cycle”) on Sunday, September 2nd -- for all ages & abilities - the 1st Sunday of each month. 4.5 miles. Meet at 2:30 pm in the parking lot outside of Bruster's in Dunwoody Village. We'll go thru safety checks and ride orientation. Promptly depart at 3 pm. We travel as a group for the entire route. Riders 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Participating cyclists must wear a helmet.

Note: We will not ride in inclement weather or hazardous road conditions. Ride Year-round.

Georgia Legislature needs to reconsider decriminalizing our 17 year old children.

17 and a criminal record for life.

I had the pleasure of listening to Former DeKalb County District Attorney J. Tom Morgan twice in the last week speak on how Georgia Laws negatively affect Georgia Teenagers as he outlined the archaic laws that by common sense, should be changed. The laws are detrimental to our youth, they devalue the criminal justice system in the State and are far too costly with no real benefit.

The way our political system works, it takes great courage for one person to push for change as there are worries of being called out as being "soft on crime". Over time the scales of justice tips to the breaking point and then we as a society need to reevaluate; I believe that time is now.

I wish Governor Nathan Deal, Attorney General Sam Olens and the leadership of the Georgia General Assembly were in attendance this evening because if they were; my dream would be that they would form a Blue Ribbon Panel of Experts together with a Special Joint Committee on Georgia Juvenile Justice Reform to use this next session to affect positive changes for the 17 year olds in our society by rolling back some of the laws this State currently has on the books.

If you watch the video at the bottom, former State Senator Dan Weber stood in the well to discuss aspects of the Romeo and Juliet Provision, but he was also crying out for changes to an unjust system and I now see the Former DeKalb County District Attorney, Mr. J. Tom Morgan doing the exact same thing. When you understand that Mr. Morgan has the experience of being forced to put kids away with no option of leniency and that he has the insight of an unjust judicial system, why is nothing more being done?

“There are only four states in the country that treat our teenagers as adults when they’re 17, and Georgia’s one of those four states,” said Morgan, who has spoken to many thousands of teenagers, was on the U.S. Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect, and chaired Georgia’s Child Abuse Prevention Panel.

“I testified before the Georgia legislature last year about raising that age to 18 to fit with the rest of the country, and I’ll never forget what the legislator said: ‘Oh Mr. Morgan, we can’t do that because we don’t want our constituents in Georgia to think we’re soft on crime.”

Morgan said he represented two girls—one 16, one 17—who together shoplifted less than $100 worth of CDs and DVDs from Target. Because one was lawfully an adult at the time, the crime was on her permanent record, while the 16-year-old didn’t have it on hers.

“You’re criminal history starts on your 17th birthday and stays with you until the day you die,” he said. “Don’t screw it up.”  (WestCobb Patch - March 2011)

Someone needs to start listening and instead of talking to just high school students, Mr. Morgan needs to talk to the Legislature one more time, but this time he needs the backing of the powers that be who need to come out in support of such changes.

Governor Deal if you are looking to leave a legacy, I can think of no nobler cause than being the instigator of juvenile criminal reform.  Please make it happen.

1. DISCUSSION: The Budget Committee has invited the CEO, Executive Assistant, and Finance Director to a meeting to address the millage rate issues brought up by the Mayor’s of DeKalb County. All of the Mayors of DeKalb County have been invited to attend to participate in the discussion.

Mayors organize to question county millage - Dunwoody Crier

In the end, Dunwoody, which only uses the fire service, had the highest county millage increase (15.25 percent) followed by Doraville (9.84 percent), Chamblee (9.9 percent) and Stone Mountain (9.7 percent). “We want to understand how they did their calculations,” Dunwoody City Manager Warren Hutmacher said. “We want to make sure special tax districts are implemented consistent with the Service Delivery Strategy.”  Because the millage rates are already set for this year and the county collects the taxes for the cities, Hutmacher said it would be impractical at this point to reset the millage rates this late in the year.

 DeKalb County’s nine mayors, its county commissioners and CEO Burrell Ellis are expected to meet Aug. 28 to discuss concerns over disproportionate property tax increases.  The cities, which are home to 102,794 residents, or 14.9 percent of the county’s population, say the county’s 2012 millage rates have increased their property taxes from 7 percent to 15 percent while the millage rate for unincorporated DeKalb declined by double digits for police, roads and parks.

I have received several emails regarding an expansion of  Life Center Ministries on Mt. Vernon Rd in Sandy Springs and was given notice that there is a meeting taking place Tonight to discuss it.  I was provided a few documents but the quality was poor and they were hard to read therefore I didn't see the use of posting them.

The meeting is planned for Monday Aug 27, 5 PM at Brooke Farm Pavilion located at the end of Brooke Farm Drive. All are welcome to attend.

"Are you and the council aware that the Life Center Church located on Mt. Vernon across the street from Brooke Farm is requesting a usage variance to build a Discovery Point Daycare on its property? The daycare facility is 10,000 sq feet and will house up to 240 kids with operating hours from 6am to 6:30 PM Monday- Friday. The property is Sandy Springs but affects all of us in Dunwoody as well. We in Brooke Farm have formed a fact finding committee to keep neighbors and interested parties informed."

The meeting is planned for Monday Aug 27, 5 PM at Brooke Farm Pavilion located at the end of Brooke Farm Drive. All are welcome to attend. We are preparing our plan for the August 30 Community Developer Resolution Meeting, the Sept 20 Planning and Zoning Meeting and the Oct 16 City Council Meeting.

Our contacts include Deerfield, Deerfield East 1, 2, Deerfield North, Spalding Lakes, St Andrews, Brooke Ridge, The Gates at Farmbrooke, Hunters Woods, Ryefield, Dunwoody Heritage. Ideally, each neighborhood will establish a small committee to co-ordinate with our efforts.

Please bring the speaker or representative from your neighborhood who will attend the zoning meetings so we can establish a the plan to include all appropriate objections and determine the most effective offense.

Attending will be a zoning veteran who will give advice about the process.

I am attaching the latest plat the church provided. It shows the size of the daycare building, the location and the landscape plan. Astonishingly, it is almost the size of the current church sanctuary and has a bigger footprint when the 2 playgrounds are included.

As a footnote, the little historical white house on the church property will be demolished if the plan is implemented.

Can you guess which sign above is not in Dunwoody?

The first sign from the left looks like it was newly installed and is located just to the North of the JCC entrance on Tilly Mill; there is no permit attached to the back.  The middle sign comes directly from the TV Show, Seinfeld where Kramer joins the “adopt a highway” program, but his methods are a little unorthodox.  The third sign is located on Mount Vernon, East of Chamblee Dunwoody Rd across from the Dunwoody Farmhouse and it has a permit sticker identifying September 2008.

As per the Crier, a federal lawsuit was filed last week against the City of Dunwoody because the city refused to grant an Adopt-A-Spot beautification program to an individual who wanted to use the program for a political purpose.

Kramer was last seen hiding in Jerry's apartment in order to make sure that he isn't served with a subpoena.

Unfortunately for him, if I was a process server; Jerry's apartment would be the first place I would look.

Dunwoody Government 101 - 8 Week Program

Dunwoody, GA – August 10, 2012 – In an effort to strengthen the community’s knowledge of municipal operations, the City of Dunwoody proudly announces the debut of the Dunwoody Government 101 educational series. The Dunwoody Government 101 series is an eight week course designed to enhance residents’ understanding of city government and offers the community a chance to experience and discover the primary undertakings of the City.

Dunwoody’s Government 101 series will provide participants with a look inside each of the City’s departments through a lively blend of demonstrations, presentations, and tours, all conducted in a casual format at numerous sites throughout the City. Participants can expect to come away with a heightened awareness and knowledge of local government operations as well as a greater understanding of how to get involved in local civic and community affairs.

Classes for the eight-week Government 101 series will be held each Tuesday evening beginning September 25, and concluding Tuesday, November 13, 2012. The sessions are free to attend and open to Dunwoody residents over the age of 18. 

“This type of community education serves an important function in a democracy, especially in a large and complex society like ours,” said Dunwoody Mayor Mike Davis.  “Our goal is to help create an informed and involved community and access to this information is all part of helping promote civic engagement and community collaboration.”

Interested participants should complete the Dunwoody Government 101 application which is available online at Dunwoodyga.gov, or at City Hall. Completed forms may be sent to Edie Damann at edie.damann@dunwoodyga.gov, dropped-off, or faxed to 678-382-6701.

Dunwoody City Council decision on Monday may modify long term plans for Dunwoody Village Parkway

Below is a post from January 12th where council was given an update on DV Pkwy and Monday is the first time this matter has come back in front of council for any reason.  If Monday's item fails for lack of overall community support then the funds might soon be freed up for other large transportation projects.  I personally have heard a lot of con and very little pro therefore I could use some feedback from both the residents and local business community (Regency) on the Parkway decision.  Thoughts?  Thanks.

With some of the attention that the Dunwoody Village Parkway project has commanded, city staff put together a one page document to highlight the plan and to answer some questions we have received about the project.  This project has been discussed numerous times and is part of both the Dunwoody Village and Transportation Master Plans whereby it was hoped this project would not only improve the walkability of the area, but could possibly spur future redevelopment of the center by bringing businesses closer to the street and eventually adding cross streets.

From everything I read and heard on this project, I thought it was clearly desired by the community but I am sure we will discuss this to see if it is still a transportation improvement that is desired at this cost or does it need to be modified or dropped entirely.

Below are a few links of interest and I am told that the plans for the North Peachtree Road / Tilly Mill / Peeler intersection will be released later day or in the very near future.  I will post it when I get it.

Registration will be closing later this week for the new Frontier League at Murphey Candler Baseball designed for kids with mild life challenges.  Spaces are still available for this ground breaking league and I would like to encourage anyone with a child interested in baseball who fits the medical requirements below to join.

I usually attend monthly Dunwoody Homeowners Association Meeting but missed on Sunday as I wore myself out playing several hours of water volleyball at the neighborhood pool and then decided to treat my family to our favorite fine dining establishment, Sweet Tomatoes.  Anyway, it looks like I may have missed at least one interesting conversation regarding "City Hall".

With a number of higher end food, beer and wine establishments opening; Alon's seems to be kicking it up a notch.  There's a craft beer tasting at Alon's on Ashford Dunwoody Road on Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. The event, which will feature five beers from Cisco Brewers and Minhas Brewery, costs $15 a person to attend. Reservations can be made by calling (678) 397-1781.  Has anyone tried the Monday Pizza deal or the Weekend Brunch?  Both look interesting.

20th Annual Lekotek Run 4 Kids | August 18, 2012

On August 18th, kids and families in the City of Dunwoody will be lacing up their tennis shoes to participate in the Lekotek Run -- all to benefit children with disabilities. This Dunwoody-based event, held at Georgia Perimeter College provides an opportunity to help kids and stay fit in the process. That’s a winning combination.  We hope you will consider running or even fielding a team for the event. We have course options for every fitness level -- a 4 mile run/walk and a 1-mile fun run/walk.

The four mile road race and racewalk and one mile fun run start and finish at Georgia Perimeter’s Dunwoody campus. The four mile race is a scenic route through Dunwoody and begins at 8:00am. The one mile fun run begins at 9:00 am. All participants receive a multi-colored 100% cotton long sleeve T shirt and all children receive medals. A finish line brunch and party include fun activities for the whole family.  In addition to pre-race registration at Active.com and at the Sandy Springs Phidippides store, race day registration will begin at 7 AM.  So run for a cause and help Lekotek kids make great strides.

Peachtree Corners Meeting on Thursday to give update on Winters Chapel Wal-Mart

Update on Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market

The City of Peachtree Corners City Council announced it has scheduled the second in a series of Town Hall meetings. It's been slated for Thursday, August 2, at 7:30 p.m. in District 1 at the Winters Chapel Methodist Church.

The Town Hall will be hosted by Post 1 council member Phil Sadd and Post 5 council member Lorri Christopher. The purpose of the meeting is to give residents an opportunity to meet and talk with their council members.

The format will be Q&A and will give the council members a chance to provide residents with information on what the City Council has accomplished over the past few months.

Mayor Mike Mason will also be on hand along with a Wal-Mart representative to update residents on the status of the new Walmart Express planned for Winters Chapel Road. It will be the first Walmart store in Peachtree Corners.
