Dunwoody Police shooting near Perimeter Mall.

Dunwoody police say one of their own officers shot and killed a man after he sped through an intersection and hit several cars near Perimeter Mall on Wednesday night.

Investigators say officers were directing traffic at the intersection of Perimeter Center West and Ashford-Dunwoody Road due to heavy holiday shopping traffic saw a vehicle driving erratically headed toward the intersection. They were able to flag him down and divert him into a nearby gas station.

When officers approached the car, they say the man sped off and hit at least two other vehicles. Officers fired shots at the vehicle, and one bullet went through the windshield and hit the driver in the chest. The car kept going for a few blocks before coming to a stop.

The driver of the vehicle, who has not yet been identified, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured.

The incident is now under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.

SO relieved our guys are ok! Yet I know there is an emotional toll - they would never fire unless they felt a high level of danger. Great job guys, and whoever fired - hugs from your biggest fan - you did the right thing.

Even in Dunwoody, it's a very dangerous job - shout out to Ofcr Heintz who is still recovering from being hit by a motorist. We miss you, and hope you recover completely!
