Tributes to my friend Mike Nash are crossing my feed this morning after an evening of little sleep as I was notified late last night of Coach's passing. Mike was a very special guy to this community and he (along with the dedication of his entire family) touched so lives as a coach and teacher. Mike, Tracy & the girls; We Love You!

Tonight the City of Dunwoody honored our first Mayor Ken Wright - I have posted Ken's speech from 2008 as it is still meaningful to me.

Tonight the City of Dunwoody presented our first Mayor Ken Wright the Key to the City as he and his lovely bride downsize to a place with ocean breezes and endless tennis matches. Ken mentioned to me several months ago that he might be moving away and when I saw the special presentation listed on the agenda, I correctly guessed it might be about him.
It reminded me that I had a copy of the speech Ken gave on September 24th, 2008 at our initial council swearing in, that I never published but reading it today I believe is still is pertinent and meaningful for those who were sworn in but also for the citizens of Dunwoody as we move forward and continue into self governance.

"Thank you very much Gordon, and Bev, and Don for putting all of tbs together tonight. We certainly appreciate all the efforts to do what it takes. I do not consider myself a speech maker. I would like to point out a couple of things.
I am a member of Dunwoody United Methodist Church up the street and a few weeks ago Dr. Wiley Stevens, who is our senior pastor was preaching to the congregation about stepping out of the boat and into the water. What I took away from that, which may not have been what I was supposed to take away from that, was to step out of your comfort zone and do some things that you wouldn't ordinarily do in your day-to-day lives. I think we all know it would be much easier to be sitting at home on the couch watching TV or reading a book but for everybody showing up tonight, you certainly stepped out of the boat and did something a little bit different; maybe a little inconvenient.
I would like to thank our Council for stepping out of the boat and putting themselves and their families up for public consumption. I would also like to thank the candidates that ran that were not elected. Again, it took a lot of time, and we had such a high caliber array of candidates to choose from. I think we can all be honored by what they did and putting themselves in the same situation as the Council in stepping out of their boat; hats off to those folks as well.
Certainly, for the hundreds if not thousands of volunteers during this whole process. It involved so many people from within and outside this community do different things on different days. It took a whole lot of work and was non-stop. Thank you to all the volunteers no matter what group you were in.
Certainly, the leadership down under the Gold Dome, Senator Weber and Representative Miller, it could not have been done without those folks. Thank those folks when you see them for stepping out of their boats and into the water.
I read about good leadership and the qualities of good leadership. One of the books stories requires someone to listen to diverse opinions and have open ears and sit down and talk. At the end of the conversation, with good back and forth with the person you are speaking with, no one should fear retaliation for sharing their thoughts and opinions. I am extremely confident that with this Council, we have elected a bunch of good leaders that are open to different things, open to you, the community, and open to the task at hand. I appreciate your leadership. At the end of the day, life takes a lot of twists and turns, and we don't know what we are going to face from one day to the next. Not just in what we are doing from a civic service perspective, but also from a personal perspective, a health perspective and everything in between.
With that in mind, I think the Council shares my philosophy that it is imperative that we treat each other with mutual respect and admiration. That's not just among ourselves, but back to the community and the community back to us. I look forward to this new City and that kind of cooperation and I think you should look forward to that as well.
The past few weeks, you have heard a lot of people talk about history and the historical perspective of what we have been going through in the past years. It's hard for me and it may be hard for some of you to think of the present day being something historical. If you have problems doing that, I brought with me documents given to me by Herb Sprigg. These documents show the forward-thinking things that the DHA got involved with and really planted a lot of the seeds that we see in Dunwoody today from the architecture to the way things are laid out.
I saw Herb not too long ago and he gave me a yellow folder and told me to take a look at it. I sat down that evening and within that folder there were a lot of neat pieces of history. I brought the folder with me so if any of you are interested in seeing it. This particular piece is about a huge group of citizens in Dunwoody holding a public meeting in February 1972. That meeting was to talk about the City of Dunwoody. Coincidentally enough, I was two years old at the time but we had a lot of leaders in this community that were gathering and trying to formulate how Dunwoody could form a city.
I just wanted to point out a couple of issues in this pamphlet. They talk about what is to be gained. A community say in land use planning and zoning. A community boundary which can not be overrun for rezoning or other purposes. It goes on and on but if you read this, it could have been written five months ago. What's most intriguing to me on the back, it says "Rather than risk defeat, should the city question go to the people for determination. The group which does not want to see local control is concentrating on stopping the Charter in the legislature." It goes on to talk about what happened.
Where we are today, in large measure, is to the folks back in 1972 who really got the ball rolling for us. It took 38 years. I thought that was an interesting piece to share with you. One of the last things I'd like to state is this is going to be a difficult process, and I can guarantee there is nobody sitting on this stage that expects nothing but blood, sweat, and tears. If you look at what we are doing, we're starting something from scratch. If any of you have ever started anything from scratch, it is a lot of work and ends up being about a thousand times more work than you initially expected. Make no mistake, we are prepared and up for the challenge. We will represent you in a way that you can be proud of who you elected.
Independence is never an easy thing. I think back and think of analogies. When you graduate from college and get that first job, many times you couldn't be more excited about the opportunity. It's a wonderful thing. Then a lot of reality starts to set in. You get the big bills coming in. You have to pay for insurance and $5.00 per gallon gas. Independence is not going to be easy. We are prepared for the task.
The other thing I would like to point out as I probably have this last opportunity in a semi-public forum to make a speech; make no mistake, there are people within this community and outside the community that want this city to fail. They are just grasping at pieces to see that we fail. There are people that have their letters pinned to the AJC and the Crier ready to go regarding our city. Believe me again when I say, we are up to the challenge.
As I read some of these things in other cities, I find it interesting. Sometimes a negative is not a negative. I read articles regarding Milton's sewer wars or Sandy Springs zoning wars. On initial thought, you think, look at the mess that city is in. But when you step back and look at what is happening in that process, you have local elected officials debating and discussing with local electorate these critical issues. At the end of the day, does that mean there is no debate? No it doesn't. Does that mean we are going to be 100% on the same page? No it doesn't. What it does mean is that you are going to have a voice within your city and within your Council. It doesn't guarantee that whatever the issue is, you are going to be on the side that you hoped you were in. But you are going to be there and you are going to have the opportunity to be there and you will be involved should you choose to be. That is a whole lot better than it just happening and you not having a single word in it. I hope everybody takes that to heart and remembers that as we face our challenges ahead.
With that I would just ask everybody to remember that we never lose sight of what brought us here. That we never forget to teach younger generations about the hard work and the struggles it took for this community to come together; for this community to get a right to vote; and ultimately for this community to decide their destination. So please keep that in your heart and keep that wisdom going for future generations. With that, thank you very much for allowing us to serve you."

Light Up Dunwoody is this Sunday, Nov 17th from 2 to 6 pm in the Village. Menorah dedication for Rose Lubin will also be happening this evening.
Light up Dunwoody is a wonderful community event for the entire family and it has been presented by the Dunwoody Homeowners Association for many years. The DHA does so much for our community (4th of July Parade, Farmers Market, Light Up, Food Trucks, and so much more) and a special Kudos goes out to DHA President Mr. Bob Fiscella for his leadership. I believe Bob is dancing in the final number with Dan & company highlighting the high kicking can - can. Please keep an eye out for him.
Besides all the typical festivities, the new 13-foot Menorah will be dedicated in a ceremony to honor Rose Lubin, the Dunwoody High School graduate who was killed Nov. 7, 2023 while serving with the Israeli Defense Force in Jerusalem.
The schedule above was taken from a previous years post but honestly it is basically the same every year so I am sure it is pretty close. That being said, if you are going to see a specific neighbor or friend dance, please check with the friend on the time. The lights are scheduled to go on at 6 pm so guessing the menorah dedication will take place immediately prior.

Dunwoody Homeowners Association to meet Sunday Night to discuss Light Up Event, Dunwoody Nature Center, possible development proposals and the Tilly Mill Path.
The monthly Dunwoody Homeowners Association is this Sunday evening at 7:30 in the main meeting room at 4470 N. Shallowford (near Peachford Rd and next to the storage facility).
There are a number of interesting items on the agenda & I sorry I'm going to miss it but maybe they will be live streaming it to Facebook for later viewing.
The DHA hosts Light Up Dunwoody scheduled for Sunday November 20th from 2 to 6 pm with Santa Photos, Live Reindeer, Holiday Dancers, Choral and Musical Performances, Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting! NEW LOCATION - Across the Street! Shops of Dunwoody, 4537 Chamblee-Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody, GA 30338
Dunwoody Nature Center reps are coming to talk to the DHA on Sunday and I'm unsure of the topic but looking at their calender it could be a discussion on Yoga, Night Hikes, Bird Walks, Fall Family Overnight Campout, or the one that peeks my interest, Forest Bathing with a certified Forest Therapy guide. It might not be a discussion on any of those topics but hey, you now know some events happening at the Nature Center.
It appears that there are community discussions regarding several developments, one looks to be the demolition & possible redevelopment of a house on Mt. Vernon and the other is the proposed Grubb Condo / Office tower project proposed for the old city hall site that now wants to add a medical building. It also appears that the Grubb matter will be coming in front of the Planning Commission on Tuesday for their review.
The last item on the agenda is a conversation requested by the Briers North Community to discuss possible plans to put a 12 ft concrete path on Tilly Mill and as they have an open public petition against that path; I am guessing they are looking for support from the DHA? Just a guess.

DeKalb County School Board Member Anna Hill will present at tonight's Dunwoody Homeowners Association Meeting at 7:30 pm
The monthly DHA Board meeting is held on the first Sunday of the month, much of it is open to the public and it is sometimes live streamed here. The agenda for tonight's meeting looks interesting as they are discussing three topics that have all crossed my desk with resident questions / concerns in the last week.
The first is a discussion on a Multi-Use Trail and with at least eight path projects either under construction or under consideration within the city limits, I am not sure of the discussion topic but will list some documents or links below. The Winters Chapel path is the one under current construction and guessing this discussion will be about that specific topic and resident impacts.

The second topic is a discussion on an update to the PDK Master Plan and residents are concerned of greater aircraft noise. Documents are below and I offered to request that the PDK Staff & related County Officials like DeKalb Commissioner Robert Patrick, give a presentation on the proposed master plan update and how it would effect Dunwoody long term. Maybe that conversation is happening at the DHA Meeting? If not, City Council is happy to raise too.

The final topic of discussion is an update from our DeKalb County School Board Member, Ms. Anna Hill whom I am guessing is on the agenda to explain the DeKalb Board of Education’s recent decision to remove Superintendent Watson-Harris. Volunteers needed saturday morning to assist with childhood cancer prevention project, Dunwoody Village will be Rocking Saturday Night and Sunday is the Annual DHA Meeting
There are many worthwhile charitable causes in which to support and childhood cancer research is one that is close to my heart. My friends and Dunwoody residents Donal & Karen Flemming are the main facilitators of St. Baldrick's in Atlanta having hosted numerous events, including the St. Baldrick's Float in the St. Patrick's Day Parade every year. Today, Saturday morning the Flemming's could use your assistance with rolling t-shirts to be thrown from the float during the parade. I will be at All Saints Catholic Church, gym in the lower parking lot to assist and maybe I will see you there for a short shift between 8 and 1 pm.

As some of my long time blog readers may remember I have shaved my head for St. Baldrick's a number of times, each time with one of my boys and lately my youngest who is now 16 is asking to join me to shave my head once again because he too wants to participate.I hate fundraising and my bride might not like the idea (I think she used the words Uncle Fester as a term of endearment?), but it might happen again. Until then I help with t-shirts.

Starting at 8 pm there will be a live band (Family Truckster from Dunwoody) playing, a few funds will be collected for Camp Twin Lakes and neighbors will be talking to neighbors they haven't seen in several years. Come join us.
The Dunwoody Homeowners Association is holding its annual meeting at 2pm, Sunday, February 27. The meeting will take place at the City of Dunwoody annex at 4470 N. Shallowford Rd. Maybe I'll see you there and I think it will also be available streamed on Facebook too.
Part of the DHA meeting will be a review of the proposed expansion of the Spruill Center Art Building to add more class rooms and art classes to the community. Here is the request from Spruill to the City Council which includes the full plans of the expansion.
On Monday the Dunwoody City Council will be finalizing a construction contract for the new park on Perimeter Center East located within close walking distance of 1,000's of apartments that have been undeserved of close recreational amenities. The new park will have a playground, open green space, the city's first splash pad and a walking trail through the woods. I will post the full plans tomorrow when I post the full Monday night Council agenda.

Proposed DeKalb School Changes as Preliminary Master Plan is released, DHA Candidate Forum on Oct 13th, New Dunwoody Park Plans include Splash Pads and Girls Softball Facilities
Preliminary - DeKalb County School System Comprehensive Master Plan
For our cluster, the DeKalb County School System suggests turning Austin and the new Shallowford (to be built on Chamblee Dunwoody in Georgetown) into K-8, adding an Early Learning Center to Kingsley, rebuilding Hightower and redistricting the new Shallowford and Hightower students to the Chamblee Cluster. This will reduce both Peachtree and Dunwoody student populations. Note there are no planned projects suggested for Peachtree or Dunwoody High School, and only new HVAC systems for Chesnut and Kingsley. Also, note that nothing seems to change for at least two years as the construction of Shallowford is two years out and Hightower is 5 plus years out. The traditional moderator is the sitting DHA president. Occasionally a news editor has been invited to participate. In the past the forums have been held at local swim/tennis clubs or at the Dunwoody High School auditorium.
Questions are collected from the public via an online form. DHA exec board members coallate the questions for each race. Candidates do not know the questions prior to the forum and they do not play a role in setting the format.

Three Dunwoody City Council seats are on the Nov. 2 ballot, with six candidates vying in the races. Reporter Newspapers asked each candidate their views on pressing city topics.
Advance voting for the November 2, 2021, General Election/Special Election will take place at the Dunwoody Library from October 12 through October 29, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Weekend advance voting days are October 16 and October 23 with available hours from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Due to Covid-19, we again made a decision to cancel trick-or-treating this year in Briers North. Our traditional Halloween candy and decorations will be absent. We will revisit the situation next year - hopefully we will be able to resume in 2022. If you've never been, it was always quite a sight, and kudos to the many families who would put on this event year after year.

On Tuesday the Dunwoody Planning Commission is meeting and they have discussions taking place on the proposed changes to the zoning of Dunwoody Village. Once the Planning Commission hears, approves, modifies or makes suggestions to the zoning plan, the next move will be to the City Council for more hearings, changes and possible approval. I will be following this matter closely and listening to the various points raised. I also believe the Dunwoody Homeowners Association (have you paid your dues?) will be discussing this same matter on Sunday night so you may want to attend to listen or weigh in there.

Dunwoody Mayoral & City Council Candidate Forum - this afternoon from 2 to 4 pm at Dunwoody High School

This afternoon the Dunwoody Homeowners Association and the Dunwoody Reporter newspaper will be hosting the Dunwoody Mayoral & City Council Candidate Forum at 2 pm at the Dunwoody High School Auditorium, 5035 Vermack Road. There are three contested at large (citywide) races that all residents will be able to vote upon and all of those candidates have agreed to participate in the forum.
On November 5th (if not before because of early voting) all Dunwoody residents will be voting for a new Mayor and all residents will also be voting for new representatives in Districts 1 and 2.
As the only candidate running in an unopposed election in District 3, I too was invited to participate in the forum but in fairness to the other candidates and more importantly to the attendees of the forum looking to decide on whom to vote for, I saw little value in my participation as my absence from the forum in a non-contested race would allow extended time for the residents to learn of the contested races.
After 11 years of public service and over 3,600 blog posts available for anyone to read, I believe a large chunk of the involved citizens already know where I stand on many of the issues facing this City.
I believe the forum will be broadcast live on the DHA Facebook page and that the Dunwoody Reporter will be recording it for later presentation on the web.

Modern Dunwoody, DHA Annual meeting on Sunday, Nature Center, Rec Guide, Yellow Dot, What's Up podcast, other updates.
I've seen a few people posting old and new profile photos on Facebook and figured I would share an old profile of Dunwoody from 1991 that was once highlighted in a news program. What was once old is new again.
“We like the look of the Williamsburg look here in the middle of Dunwoody Village, but I guess since I’m a child of the ’70s it bothers me that everything would have to be exactly the same. When Turtle’s built a new building they had a purple awning on it and some of the Dunwoody people are fighting it, and I just think there’s so many more important things to fight about than a purple awning to wreck the Williamsburg look. I just say relax about it.”

Talking of the Dunwoody Nature Center, Mr. Michael Cowan has been named the new Executive Director of the DNC and will lead the next stage of growth, in support of their mission. Michael is a grad of Georgia Tech, has an MBA from Emory and has served on the Dunwoody Sustainability Commission. Welcome to the Dunwoody Nature Center Michael, I know you will be doing wonderful things.

The city has so many public works projects in the pipeline all at various levels of planning and construction that I asked for an update of all capital projects - here is the list.
GDOT won’t release property acquisition info ahead of toll lane meetings
Austin Elementary / Roberts Drive signal and transportation plans - construction bid package is on the street. Notice to Proceed is expected to be given in February 2019 and the contractor shall mobilize within 10 days of receiving the notice to proceed. Work shall be completed within 180 calendar days.
Big things are going up on Hammond next to the Mall & Marta. 1224 Hammond Office building & the Hyatt Place hotel will be tucked in just behind it.
The City has had crews on the streets filling potholes on the main streets - please use See Click Fix to report any public work issues.

Last week I posted a question from a concerned mom asking for increased traffic enforcement and speed reductions in school zones and there was quite a bit of feedback mostly asking for better traffic enforcement of the current regulations. Dunwoody police were active on the roadways, working at schools and even citing 12 people on Thursday for not stopping for pedestrians in the crosswalk. There are no easy answers on these types of problems but the City will keep working the issue, researching best practices and approaches including looking at engineering fixes for lighting and crosswalk signaling where it needs to be improved.
Social media sites like NextDoor and private neighborhood Facebook groups are great ways to share information to a limited group but I always wonder if there is a better medium to share this information to the Dunwoody Police because I don't believe they see much of it as it is usually limited to a specific geographic area? As a City Councilman, I read numerous Dunwoody related posts, tip off the Dunwoody Police where warranted and raise issues publicly on my blog where it makes sense but it makes me question how our resident/city communication practices can be improved? Continuous improvement should always be a goal.

DHA discusses Ashford Dunwoody restaurant park redevelopment to grocery store, restaurants and possible hotel on Sunday night.
Dunwoody Homeowners Association will host a representative from the Galloway Law Group (representing Branch Properties, LLC) THIS Sunday, January 6 at 7:30, North DeKalb Cultural Arts Center. As of this posting, this will be the only opportunity for public dialogue on this project before it goes to ZBA and the government approval process.

Light up Dunwoody this Sunday at the Dunwoody Farmhouse - Mt. Vernon and Chamblee-Dunwoody Road

An annual community event to welcome the holiday season, Light up Dunwoody Holiday Village opens at 3:00 pm and concludes with the lighting of the tree and menorah at 5:45 pm. Vendors and sponsors will offer wonderful holiday treasures and refreshments!
Santa will be on the lawn of the Spruill Farm House with his sleigh, and live reindeer will be available for photo opportunities. Bring your own camera!
I was overjoyed when I heard that three local girl scouts who have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award were chosen to pull the switch to light the house. I have the pleasure of meeting several of these your ladies and I couldn't be happier for them and their families.
Kudos to Laura Lawson Duncan, Emily Schmitt, and Erica Holmes as well as any other Gold Award recipients who will be assisting with the honor.
