Fireworks !!!!!

3rd of July - Lillian Webb Park & Downtown Norcross Fireworks - 9:00 pm

Downtown Norcross is a great little destination with a few great restaurants, drinking establishments, shops and public parks with a train running by to wave to.  When my children were little Thrasher Park was our favorite place to visit because of the big trees, shaded playground and the regular train running by.  Norcross does a nice family event on the 3rd; get out there by mid-evening to layout the blankets and set some chairs; more then likely there will be friends and neighbors from Dunwoody surrounding you. Walk the downtown, visit the shops, food trucks, listen to the band & DJ until the fireworks show kicks off at 9:30.

4th of July - Chamblee City Hall / Downtown Fireworks (new location) - 9:00 pm

For many years our family would do the Dunwoody parade, spend the afternoon doing numerous events (watermelon races, splash contests, diving for change or beer, water volleyball)  at my local swim tennis club and then if we still had the energy we would head over to Chamblee to see the fireworks show.  The show is usually quite impressive and this year the show has been moved to downtown Chamblee near City Hall.  Get there early and parking in the immediate area will be tough.

4th of July - City Springs Fireworks in Sandy Springs - 9:00 pm

Living on the Southside of Dunwoody, Keswick Park in Chamblee is easy for me but I know many of you are closer to Sandy Springs who also puts on a nice fireworks show preceded by a band.

Dunwoody 4th of July Parade and other area events

4th of July - Dunwoody Parade 9 am Mount Vernon & Jett Ferry heading towards the Village.

I love the Dunwoody 4th of July Parade as it is the epitome of a community event where we gather to celebrate this country's independence, those who sacrificed for it and even in times of strife where we know our country and it's people are not perfect; we still celebrate America. For all her faults, she’s still a shining beacon, the hope of the world and the only country we have.

Dunwoody Homeowners Association and the Dunwoody Reporter newspaper will host the annual Independence Day Parade on Monday July 4th featuring marching bands, floats, clowns, animal units and local celebrities. In 2021 the parade attracted over 2,500 participants and 35,000 spectators!

The parade route is approximately 2.7 miles and steps off from the intersection of Mount Vernon Road and Jett Ferry Road at 9:00 a.m., proceeds west on Mt. Vernon to Dunwoody Village, turns right onto Dunwoody Village Parkway, circles around the Parkway, and left into Dunwoody Village in between First Watch and Citizens Bank . Parade spectators are encouraged to setup chairs along Mt. Vernon and circle around the Dunwoody Village Parkway into Dunwoody Village. Spectators will be blocked from viewing on the east side of Jett Ferry on Mt. Vernon due to the staging and setup for parade participants. Viewing will start on the west side of Jett Ferry on Mt. Vernon.  (I always smile as see numerous parade viewing spaces reserved the night before be it with tents, blankets or chairs as it reminds me of the practice of Dibs after a Chicago snowfall.)

Mt. Vernon Road, between Jett Ferry Road and Dunwoody Village, will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. [times are approximate; contact the Dunwoody Police Department for specific questions about road closures and traffic information].The Parade Grand Marshal for 2022 is my friend and former Councilwoman Pam Tallmadge.

The parade will have many of the same participants as it has for many years, community organizations, politicians, old cars, swim tennis associations, Dunwoody High School participants, fire trucks, etc but I am personally exited for the 116th National Army Guard Marching Band, the Dunwoody Precision Lawn Chair Drill Team, the Seed & Feed Marching Abominable, the Atlanta Falcon Cheerleaders, a huge potato and my good friend Santa Claus.

After the Parade, please join the Dunwoody community in front of the US Post Office in Dunwoody Village for family fun and great food. Troop 266 will be selling delicious BBQ (chicken or pork), slaw, watermelon, homemade brownie, and tea or lemonade.

Dunwoody Independence Day Festivities - Band Concert on Sunday and Parade on Monday July 5th @ 9 a.m.

Dunwoody Homeowners Association and the Dunwoody Reporter newspaper will host the annual Independence Day Parade on Monday July 5th featuring marching bands, floats, clowns, animal units and local celebrities. In 2019 the parade attracted over 2,500 participants and 35,000 spectators!

Mt. Vernon Road, between Jett Ferry Road and Dunwoody Village, will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. [times are approximate; contact the Dunwoody Police Department for specific questions about road closures and traffic information].

The Parade Grand Marshal for 2021 are the Front Line Workers, those critical workers who served citizens during the pandemic, including the Dunwoody Police Department, DeKalb Fire, healthcare workers, grocery & pharmacy store employees and restaurant workers. Anyone on the Frontlines during the health crisis is welcome to participate.

The parade will have many of the same participants as it has for many years, but this year we are honored to have the 116th National Army Guard Marching Band and the Spirit of Atlanta Drum & Bugle Corps providing musical entertainment. The Georgia Garrison of the 501st Legion will be in attendance and maybe Darth Vader will be seen surrounded by all the other Stormtroopers.  The Weinermobile will be in attendance again this year as will a bunch of elected officials.   I also know of a new parade entry that I am really excited about as I believe they plan to put the razzel dazzel back into marching the parade route. I heard there will be over 120 entries in the parade so I am really excited to participate and view all the entries.

After the Parade, please join the Dunwoody community in front of the US Post Office in Dunwoody Village for family fun and great food. Troop 266 will be selling delicious BBQ (chicken or pork), slaw, watermelon, homemade brownie, and tea or lemonade.  Dunwoody Rotary will be selling Hotdogs, drinks, chips and homemade cookies.  Moondog Growlers will be offering craft beers and canned wine to wet your whistle. Porters Brew & Que will be hosting a post parade brunch.

FYI - my blog email service Feedburner quite operating therefore I have quickly migrated over to MailChimp and converted the mailing list over to that service.  Sorry if this is inconvenient for anyone but I hope to continue to share all city agendas and public documents in every form possible including email.  The platform is new to me and it will need tweaking if it works at all.  Thanks  John

Dunwoody Independence Day Parade - Kudos to the DHA !

Kudo's to the Dunwoody Homeowners Association for holding their annual 4th of July Parade on the 4th of July - I am told the gutsy call worked out wonderfully.  I hope you were able to attend and in case you were not, please feel free to check out some wonderful photos on the DHA Facebook site - click here.

I'm sorry to say that I missed the parade but hope to be in attendance next year.  I was in Washington DC for a work assignment followed by a week of vacation with the family back to Chicago to visit Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts and Cousins.  Needless to say based on the lack of posts that I stepped away from all Dunwoody communication while gone therefore if you were trying to reach me, I will attempt to respond ASAP.  Thanks,  John

Dunwoody 4th of July Parade - 9 a.m. down Mt. Vernon Rd ending in the Village.

Dunwoody Crier - Parade Special Section

9:00 a.m. Start Time

Georgia's Largest 4th of July Parade organized by the Dunwoody Homeowners Association starts at 9 am with Dunwoody's First Mayor, Ken Wright leading the procession as the Grand Marshal.    Mt. Vernon will be closed to vehicle traffic at about 8:30 so please find your seat in the shade early and be considerate of others when parking.  Last year I shot a little video of my parade experience and it gives a good feel for what to expect from this year's parade. Check it out.

Candy for the kids has always been a big part of the parade but know that it is suppose to be handed out, not thrown.  Parents please extra vigilant over the safety of your children as accidents can happen in the blink of an eye.  Swim teams and younger participants usually start from St. Lukes (about the half way point) therefore I recommended to a friend with a sweet tooth that he should sit just to the West of St. Lukes as the swim team's candy stash will still be fresh.

Please support a couple of charities at the parade, Troop 764 from St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church pushing grocery carts along the parade route collecting food CAC’s Food Pantry.    Pebble Tossers, a non-profit youth service organization, will be collecting Thank You cards for soldiers and veterans along the Dunwoody 4th of July Parade route. Please make your card at home and bring to the parade with you! Pebble Tossers will deliver the cards to the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Decatur on July 5th.

Boy Scout Troop 494, from Dunwoody Baptist Church, will collect flags to be retired at Dunwoody High School band’s bake sale tent.  Parade-goers are encouraged to turn in worn or dirty U.S. flags they no longer use. Troop 494 will take the flags to scout camp at Woodruff Scout Reservation in mid-July and “retire” the colors in a ceremony that honors our nation’s flag with the dignity and respect it is due. Those who are unable to drop off flags after the parade will find a red bin waiting in the lobby of the Fitness Center at Dunwoody Baptist Church through July 10th.

The closing ceremonies at Dunwoody Village will feature a concert by the 116th Army National Guard Band, a closing concert by the Village Church of Dunwoody band, several patriotic displays and the awards for best parade entrants.

As always, non-profit groups will sell food and beverages at parade’s end. The popular barbecue lunches from Boy Scout Troop 266 of Dunwoody United Methodist are the troop’s biggest fund-raiser of the year and food can be ordered in advance at a discount. The All Saints Catholic Knights of Columbus will be selling hamburgers and the Dunwoody High football program will sell spirit wear.  Calvary Church Kids Zone will offer Jumpies, sides, face painting, and games for kids of all ages near the Goodyear Tire and Service Center.

Other non-profits on hand include Georgia Flight Youth Basketball with sno-cones, Homestead Hope Foundation, Queen of Hearts Foundation, the VFW, Pebble Tossers, the Dunwoody Chamber of Commerce and Scout Troop 494 with a flag collection.

Dunwoody Area Fireworks - I recommend Norcross on the 3rd and Chamblee on the 4th.

It is a rare year when we actually attend two firework shows back to back, two nights in a row but when the shows are close and the parking is easy, it does happen in the Heneghan household from time to time.  Depending on how worn out my crew is on the 4th, two shows might be in our future.

Norcross - July 3rd
The City of Norcross puts on a nice show (20 min last year) which is held in a relatively new, very large Lillian Webb Park which is located between Old Norcross (Train Station & Thrasher Park) and Buford Hwy.  The new park has lots of open grass, a water fountain for the kids to play in and live music.  The City hosts a festival you on the streets of the town with numerous food vendors and entertainment for the kids.
News Article on Event.

For Norcross, I usually park just off Buford Highway about a block away in one of the nearby empty parking lots.  The beauty of parking here is that it is an easy trip home with little ones in tow with Buford Highway being able to handle the mass exodus traffic.

Chamblee - July 4th
The City of Chamblee hosts an all day affair in Keswick Park and though I have attended some of the all day festivities in prior years, I usually just zip over for the fireworks after a busy day grilling out at the pool.  Parking is easiest for me at Chamblee Middle School which is about two blocks away but spots can be found in the neighborhood if you arrive a little earlier then I usually do. City Festivities schedule here.

Musical Performance Schedule:
2 p.m. - Chris Cauley from Atlanta, GA and the television show,The Voice. Chris considers himself a soul singer and performs pop covers. Click Here to see his video from The Voice audition.
4 p.m. - Nathan Ware - from Woodstock, GA. Nathan is a country music singer/song writer. He will be performing some covers for artists like Zac Brown and will also perform some of his own originals.
6 p.m. - Mike Veal Band - out of Atlanta, GA. Mike and his band covers a combination of genres including blues, rock, funk and fun. The band has a diverse musical background.

Other Fourth of July Activities Schedule
2:00 - 6:00 p.m. - Train rides, clowns, spider bungee jump, pony hops, rock wall, face painting, balloon animals, clowns, moonwalks and other carnival type kids activities.
9:30ish p.m. - Fire Works Show
