Thank you to Ms. Sydnee Cohen for painting the Little Free Library at the Brook Run Playground.

Thank you Sydnee for stepping forward to assist with this project and for providing one of the first works of  public art within our park.   After stopping by today to see Sydnee's fine work, we need to find a way to keep this box stocked with children's books.   I have filled it twice but the Children's books seem to be borrowed more than they seem to be dropped off so maybe a solution could involve the next Friends of the Dunwoody Library book sale?

If you have excess children's books that you would like to donate to the cause, I am sure a child would enjoy what ever you have to offer.

Garden Classes at Dunwoody Library (Trees & English Gardening)

DeKalb Cooperative Extension
Homeowners Class at Dunwoody Library
Tuesday, October 19, 2010, 6pm

“Trees of Our Lives: Small Native Trees for the Landscape” – Dawn Hines, Master Gardener This presentation includes many photographs showing all aspects of tree care: choosing, planting, pruning, and the danger of non-native invasives (or exotics) to our landscapes and native areas.

“English Gardening through the Ages – Ideas for your Atlanta Garden” – Averil Bonsall, Master Gardener Coordinator for DeKalb County Come and hear about the different styles of gardens as they developed over the years in England, and get ideas about how you can use these same styles in your garden in the Atlanta area. Averil will show a lot of pictures of English gardens, including some from family gardens not open to the public.

Dawn is a DeKalb Master Gardener who began her gardening journey at a very early age. She spent the first 12 summers of her life playing among her grandmother’s gardens and listening to her grandmother’s dramatic readings. Today her love of the garden, enhanced by her love of the stage, encourages her to add to her collection of garden speeches.

Dawn encouraged and lead the creation of the Tucker Butterfly Garden on LaVista Rd in 2008 as a new DeKalb County Master Gardener Project. Dawn’s latest project is a Butterfly Presentation and Tour for Preschoolers.

Averil is a life-long English gardener who brought her love of gardening to Stone Mountain some thirty years ago. She now lives in Stone Mountain Village, and she and her husband are developing an English-style garden around their old bungalow and front porch! She also helps to maintain the Village Community Garden.

Friends of the Dunwoody Library

In these tough economic times we have the fortune of being able to turn to our local library for help. Libraries provide free internet access, computer classes, children’s programs, and of course, thousands of books, DVDs and more that can be borrowed for no cost at all. Unfortunately, many libraries across the country are losing vital funds to keep these services and programs afloat. One non-profit organization, The Friends of the Dunwoody Library, has been working tirelessly over the years to make sure that the Dunwoody Library remains a hub of the community, despite growing economic uncertainty. These volunteers’ efforts include sponsoring library programs, promoting literacy and organizing a major quarterly undertaking: the Dunwoody Library booksale. Money generated from these booksales, which are comprised of a massive collection of community donations, has allowed for some major undertakings, namely the renovation of the Dunwoody Library this past summer. The Friends put an astounding $185,000 towards the remodeling of the branch, which included updating the children’s library and storytime room.

And their work has ensured that the Dunwoody Library can continue to provide relevant, educational and entertaining programs for community members of all ages. Each year the Friends generously give the Dunwoody Library between $55-60,000 for programs and materials that end up benefiting the entire DeKalb County Public Library System. Children’s programs, such as storytimes and the Book Bunch Book Club, and adult literacy programs would not exist without the support of the Friends. Online databases, books, periodicals and reference materials are purchased with the help of the Friends as well. In fact, the Friends recently purchased content for a new audio book database called Overdrive. It’s not available yet, but check back to the DCPL website in the coming months.

The Friends of the Dunwoody Library continue to succeed in keeping the library a center of the community through their hard work and commitment. If you would like to help with their important work, you can stop by the Dunwoody Library and ask for a Friends of the Library membership form. If you don’t live in Dunwoody but would like to join your local Friends group, click here for more information.
