++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I will be missing this City Council meeting on Tuesday as my bride and I are taking a few days away to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary but that being said I figured I would add my spin on a few topics that are up for possible approval.

Tax funds are limited but Council is still chasing the dream to shoehorn 10 to 12 foot trails on every major road even if there are already sidewalks installed and there doesn't seem to be any concern that these overpriced, new paths will eat in the single family front yards with trail lighting shining into their homes.
Tuesday there are three path / trail items on the agenda, I agree with the maintenance of the Brook Run Trail as that 12 foot path through the trees serves hundreds of walkers every day and needs regular maintenance.

The North Peachtree path that is up for GDOT agreement is only .75 of a mile going from Cotillion to Barclay on the West Side of the street where there are already wide sidewalks in front of Chesnut & Peachtree Middle
; yet if City Council approves the GDOT agreement we are on the hook for $600K for preliminary engineering and possibly up to $14 million for construction with the dreams that we can get some Federal funds to help us with that?

The sad part is that many on Council know that 90% of the walkers to Chesnut & Peachtree, walk on the East side of the street with a very tiny sidewalk that really needs an improvement.  This is the priority need on this section of North Peachtree but if we are going to chase Federal Funds, this application for the West side needs to be submitted ASAP and is therefore on the agenda now.  Maybe if we hurry up and approve this we can then spend big money to put a huge trail where it is not needed?  I would have voted no.   Staff is looking at options on the East side but nothing has been released as of yet.

Related to the North Peachtree Path is the fact that GDOT wants us to sign an agreement on a path going under 285 at North Peachtree but remove the dedicated turn around lane.  Staff and GDOT are discussing but as someone who drives this intersection daily, the dedicated turn around lane is needed, even if an additional lane of right of way is obtained to make it happen.   I am hopeful GDOT will see it our way in the next draft back to the city.  Click here for those details.

The final Path / Trail item is hidden in the Additional Local Maintenance & Improvement Grant Funds item that awards the City $600K for road maintenance.  This is extra unplanned funds granted by the State to improve roads and requires that the money be spent rather quickly.  Dunwoody already has funded paving for next year therefore it was decided at the last meeting to put the $600 of State money into paving and then to pull $600K out of that fund and transfer it to the the Mt. Vernon / Tilly Mill project that includes a 12 foot trail on the North side of the street.   This is just moving money to a project that is already in the works & though I do not like some aspects of the plan, I understand the banking of money where we will have the need but by doing so we are not doing other things that could be done instead.

Another item I don't understand is us again chasing Federal Funds, approving the Safe Streets Grant from the Federal Highway Administration whereby we pay $50K to get $200K of effort from the Feds for road safety audits whereby those audits were already completed.   In November of 2023 we finalized the Road Safety Action Plan and now we don't need more study, audits or planning - we need to do projects.   Take this proposed $50K and spend it on safety projects in Dunwoody and not put it in the pockets of another consultant.  Just my 2 cents.

Council needs to set appropriate priorities and as I said back in October, we need to have a nest egg of cash saved up in case we can buy & develop the Dunwoody Post Office into a Community Amenity & Gathering space.

Another priority of the City is to appropriately support & fund community events run by outside vendors like the Dunwoody Homeowners Association Fourth of July Parade but that conversation will need to wait for another day.

Final thing, Dunwoody’s Memorial Day Ceremony has been moved indoors to Dunwoody City Hall due to the forecast.  10 a.m. on Monday, May 25, as we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Dunwoody's Windwood Hollow Park now has sidewalks connecting to Peeler.

Thank you to Dunwoody's Public Works and Parks Departments for installing this important connection piece for all Windwood Hollow park visitors.  Dunwoody parents of small children, if you haven't visited this park, it is truly a hidden gem.

Last year a resident pointed out the need for this sidewalk so I proposed it to the budget committee, and now it is installed.  (The little things that make me smile.)

Dunwoody City Council finalizes Brook Run Park Construction for playing fields, bandshell, restrooms, pavilions and improved access. 10 Yr Celebration, Stacey Harris, Spring Break.

Happy Friday !!

After an extensive discussion and reviewing facts, the Dunwoody City Council approved the Brook Run Stream Buffer Variance on Monday finding that satisfactory stream protections were being put into place.  The City has scheduled the groundbreaking for Brook Run Park construction for Tuesday, April 9th at 10 a.m.   Next year at this time the City will have constructed two, lit artificial turf soccer/lacrosse fields, constructed three restroom facilities, a concession stand, a band shell with a great lawn, numerous new parking spaces and a new back entrance to the facility.  Guessing the entertainment at Lemonade Days in 2020 will be moved up a notch when the new band shell will be there.

In other City news, the ribbon cutting for the new Pedestrian Bridge connecting Georgetown to Perimeter Center is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10 at 10 a.m. and the ribbon cutting for the new Windwood Hollow Park Restroom Facility is scheduled for Monday, April 15th at 10 a.m.  Mayor Shortal is hosting the 2019 State of the City on Thursday, April 11th at 6:00 pm at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia.  In recognition of Earth Day, the City is hosting a stream cleanup event on April 13th, starting at 9 a.m. at the new bridge at Georgetown.

The Dunwoody Police Department is also holding an Open House on April 1st to celebrate their 10 year anniversary.   On April 1, 2019, the Dunwoody Police Department will open their doors to the public from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. for a rare “behind-the-scenes” look at many areas otherwise restricted to the public. Visitors will be granted “back-door access” to a self-guided tour through our facilities as various Dunwoody Police and Court staff members will be on hand to answer questions or share a casual chat.

I was happy to see that my friend Stacey Harris will be running to fill the open City Council Seat being vacated by Terry Nall who has announced that he will be running for Mayor.  If you haven't read this week's Crier, I recommend that you do, as I can attest that Stacey is extremely qualified for the position.

Stacey Harris
The City of Brookhaven looks to be throwing a huge party this weekend with the Cherry Blossom Festival providing lot's of free entertainment for young and old.

As it is Friday, All Saint's is still offering their weekly Fish Fry.  All the food is great but the baked salmon, clam chowder, fried shrimp and the hush puppies are my personal favorites. Like alot of people, I'm a regular there but last week a friend came up to me and said that it was the first fish fry without Bob Lundsten being there.  She recieved a big hug and I imagine our loss is only a sliver of what Kathy and the girls are going through.

Several neighbors reached out to me because they have recieved much larger than normal Water / Sewer bills from the County and it just so happened that today we recieved in the mail information on the the mass replacement of defective water meters.  I hope these bills are settled fairly by the County.

DeKalb County School System will be out for Spring Break next week, so if you are going somewhere please drive safe and enjoy the destination.  If you stay local, enjoy the lack of traffic and uncrowded restaurants and other facilities.  If I was home with little ones, I think I might be using this LegoLand Discovery Center discount.

Lemonade Days starts less than four weeks away but it will be here before you know it.

Restrooms and other improvements planned for Dunwoody's Windwood Hollow Park

Windwood Hollow Park located just off Peeler Rd near the DeKalb Waterworks is a hidden gem of a park, offering a playground in a wooded setting, tennis courts and pavilion.  The bids for new restrooms are on the street and I anticipate that this new amenity will be built within the next few months.

Upon reviewing the parks amenities with a resident it was pointed out that this park has no dedicated sidewalks into the facility whereby parents are forced to walk in the street with children especially when bicycles and strollers are involved. This morning I pointed out this fact out to the budget committee (Pam Tallmadge, Jim Riticher and myself) and we reallocated funds to correct this this item and/or plan for a large scale trail from Peeler through the park.

Overall the budget meeting this morning started at 9:30 and ended just before 2 p.m. whereby we went over every line item, asking questions and understanding Dunwoody financial position.  We made a few minor tweaks improving pedestrian safety funding and set the ball into place for major park improvements.  The full budget will be brought in front of the community within the next month and then it will be voted upon by the full council.

Windwood Hollow Park Playground in Dunwoody is open after a complete rebuild.

Just in time for the holidays, Windwood Hollow Park Playground is finished! We still have some sidewalk work to do but the play structures are ready for use. Go by and check it out, it's pretty awesome.

Windwood Hollow Park

Located at 4865 Lakeside Drive, at 11-acres, Windwood Hollow Park features a playground, two tennis courts, picnic pavilion, nature trails, and an open meadow for free play.
