Summary of school demolition meeting by Councilwoman Lynn Deutsch.
The school will be removed and the site graded by Atlanta Demolition. http://www.atlantademolition.com
Demolition will begin sometime between mid and late March and is expected to take about a month.
The building will be treated with a primary pesticide which should exterminate whatever is in the building, but should not pose a danger to anything that might eat what has digested the pesticide.
The building must be certified pest free by a third party certifier before demolition begins. Because no one has "lived" in the building in so many years, they expect that there are fewer pests than a building that has been more recently occupied.
Asbestos will be removed by a third party and again the building must be certified asbestos free by an independent inspector (federally certified) before demolition can begin.
They will push the building in on itself working from the back. They will spray water to keep the dust down. Trucks hauling the debris will turn right out of school and get on I 285. 90-95 percent of debris will be recycled.
After the site is graded, it will be grassed and fenced until the grass is established. They will make sure and not make drainage/runoff worse. Because so much surface is being turned from impervious to pervious, drainage might actually improve.
They will work from 8:00 to about 5 only on weekdays (Unless there is an equipment issue that requires a short amount of work on a weekend.) They will follow the city ordinances.
The gym and field will be left and when it is all completed, where the school and circular drive is should be a grassy area.
The parking lot behind the field will remain as will the parking lot by the gym. Additionally, we have asked that the stairs be left to get up and down the hill. (They will do so if they remain structurally sound and aren't disturbed by the demolition.)
