Dunwoody Middle School Softball Player petitions City Council for better facilities & equality for girls softball.

Prior to Monday night's Dunwoody City Council meeting, I had the pleasure of speaking to Alyssa Rosenkoff, a Peachtree Middle School student and member of the highly successful initial season of the Junior Wildcats softball team who is advocating for improved facilities for girls softball. 

This Councilmember agrees with Alyssa and on December 6th an updated parks plan for the vacant Austin site will be released; hopefully, those plans will satisfy the inequities currently in place.

Dunwoody to hold parks master planning open house

Dunwoody, GA – November 23, 2021 – Dunwoody’s Parks and Recreation team will hold an Open House at Dunwoody City Hall on Monday, Dec. 6, to share new draft plans for future parks on Roberts Drive (former Austin school site) and Vermack Road. Residents are invited to pop in anytime between 6 and 8 p.m. to review two updated concept plans and share feedback.

“This is the next step in our continuing effort to listen to the community’s desires for these two park properties,” said Dunwoody Parks and Recreation Director Brent Walker. “We’re working toward creating final draft plans that meet the greatest needs we hear.”

This open house follows a parks pop-up held at the former Austin site in October. Two concept plans for each park were presented during that event and posted online. Parks staff and design consultants working for the City listened to feedback about the plans and used it to create one new draft plan for each park.

“We started with a public input survey with 1,400 responses, then a pop-up, and now we’re meeting again to fine-tune the conversation,” Walker added. He noted that the plans will be available online on the parks project page after the meeting.

In the meantime, the former Austin site is now open as a passive park. The demolition of the former Austin Elementary building is complete, and new sod has been planted. Two small playgrounds on the site are also open after undergoing safety improvements. As with all City parks, furry friends are welcome but must remain on a leash.

Thursday Night Football under the Lights of Dunwoody High School, come watch the talented ladies of DHS Flag Football at 5:30 pm

The Wildcat ladies of Dunwoody High School Flag Football are set to host Greenbrier on Thursday (Dec. 2) at the Dunwoody High field. Start time is 5:30 pm! Let's go Wildcats!

I'm told if they win Thursday, these talented ladies will be next playing in Mercedes Stadium for a State Championship.

These Ladies have that Wildcat Pride!!

The City of Dunwoody is partnering with the Dunwoody-Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. to organize the “Souper Bowl of Caring” food drive. The goal is to collect 55,000 pounds of food for the Community Assistance Center and Malachi’s Storehouse from December 1 through January 17, 2022. 

Nonperishable food collected during the drive will be donated to Malachi’s Storehouse and the Community Assistance Center. Collection bins for food donations will be set up at the Brook Run Park playground during Holiday Lights on Dec. 1.

Bins will also be available until Jan. 17 in these locations:

1. Spruill Center for the Arts lobby near Stage Door Theater, 5339 Chamblee Dunwoody Road
2. Porter Brew & Que, 5486 Chamblee Dunwoody Road in the Shops of Dunwoody
3. SOHO Office: Printing, Shipping & Business Services Store, 2090 Dunwoody Club Drive #106 in the Orchard Park Shopping Center

Donation bin hours and additional bin locations are listed online: www.dunwoodyga.gov/mlkday. This website will also include information about service projects for Dunwoody’s MLK, Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 17, 2022. More details will be released in December.
