Retired United States Marine Corps Brig Gen Denis Shortal gives the keynote at the DeKalb Memorial Day Ceremony, pays tribute to many fallen including Lcpl Scott Harper of Winston, GA
Retired United States Marine Corps Brigadier General Denis Shortal deliverers the keynote address at the 2014 DeKalb County Memorial Day Ceremony.
L/Cpl Scott D. Harper, nicknamed "Boots" since high school, age 21, was KIA on October 13, 2011, from Hostile fire/IED while conducting combat operations in Helmand, province, Afghanistan, and serving as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was a member of 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, from Camp Lejeune, NC. The First Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, is currently assigned to Regimental Combat Team 8, 2nd Marine Division (Forward), which heads Task Force Leatherneck. The task force serves as the ground combat element of Regional Command (Southwest) and works in partnership with the Afghanistan National Security Forces to conduct counterinsurgency operations.
This was the second deployment for L/Cpl Harper. He had previously deployed with 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division in March 2010.
Scott was a 2008 graduate from Alexander High School in Winston, (Douglas County) GA, and was active in the ROTC program. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in September 2008 shortly after graduation from high school. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in November 2009, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal in September 2011.
Scott leaves his wife, Angela Harper, his father, Brian Harper, mother Deborah Busbin Staples, his brother, Mitchell Staples, his sister, Amber Staples, a step-brother, Joseph Hulsey and a step-sister, Holly Harpe.
Reprint from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Friday, Oct., 21, 2011: They stood outside in blustery weather, tiny American flags clutched in their small hands, to show their respect for a fallen Marine from Douglas County on his final trip home.
About 600 students at Winn Elementary School spent an hour or so waiting for a motorcade carrying the body of Marine Lance Cpl. Scott "Boots" Harper to pass on its way to a Douglasville funeral home. Like them, Harper had once attended the Litha Springs school, as a first-grader. Now, he was teaching them a lesson about sacrifice..
Thousands of others joined the students along a 1-mile strip of Bankhead Highway to remember Harper and honor him as the lengthy motorcade made its journey.
Standing guard in its own way was the Marine Jr. ROTC honor guard from Lithia Springs High School, which occupied the driveway at Winn. Veterans also turned out to pay tribute to a serviceman who had died on the battlefield.
Scott was buried on October 23, 2011 at Ephesus Baptist Church Cemetery in Winston, Georgia.
PS: Tomorrow is Flag Day, please fly it proudly & if you happen to have 20, fly them too.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.
Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

Monday I placed a flag to honor a forgotten soldier laid to rest in Dunwoody, GA.
Today I attended the Dunwoody Memorial Day Ceremony where I was given a small flag and afterward I placed that same flag at the forgotten grave of Pvt James F. Adams of the Confederate Army who is buried in a single marked grave among a stand of trees just a few feet away of Shallowford Road.
A little research found the following information:
James F. Adams, was a Private in the 36th Regiment
Company F, GA Volunteer Infantry
Army of TN, CSA April 10, 1862
Captured at Vicksburg,MS July 4, 1863, and paroled there July 9, 1863.
He married Caroline G. Rainey December 21, 1867 in DeKalb Co., GA
They had eight children, five girls and three boys.
James passed away in 1882 succumbing to pneumonia and complications received in the war.
Several years later Caroline lost four of the children in the smallpox epidemic of 1885.

Dunwoody Memorial Day Ceremony - Monday 10 am at Brook Run Park
The City of Dunwoody will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 28th at Brook Run Park. We will gather as citizens to honor those who died in service to our country. In doing so, we join the 3rd Infantry soldiers who place American flags on 260,000 graves at Arlington National Cemetery, scouts across the nation who place small American flags at many other cemeteries, and cities and towns who hold parades, ceremonies and vigils on this special day. It is a very special and solemn day as we honor those who gave their life during times of war in service to our country.
All citizens of Dunwoody are invited to attend this ceremony and help us honor those who gave their life in service to their country.

City of Dunwoody is making plans for Memorial Day
On Monday, May 28th the City of Dunwoody will be holding a Memorial Day Ceremony at Brook Run Park. Exact times and details are still being firmed up but I wanted to announce now it so that calenders could be blocked out. In preparation, I have posted a video that is a reminder to all of us the debt we owe and below are a few of the many benefits that our service members deserve.
GI “Aid in Attendance,”
An assisted-living facility in Dunwoody will host an informational session on a veterans' benefit that's often overlooked.
Plantation South Dunwoody, a senior-living, assisted-care facility, has scheduled the session for the senior benefit at 9:30 a.m. April 28 at 4954 Barclay Dr. The session is open to veterans who may qualify for the benefit and their caregivers.
GI Bill - Georgia Perimeter College makes it easy to return to school.
Education subsidized through the GI Bill has always been an incentive for many soldiers who serve the armed forces. Soldiers and sailors returning from active and reserve duty want to return to the work force and often need to update their skills to gain productive employment. The best source for skills and certifications is higher education, either through accredited schools online or on campus.
The returning veteran has several options to continue their education. The financial benefits of the GI Bill determine how much copay the veteran is expected to share, and the post 911 benefits are different from the pre-911 GI Bill benefits. If a soldier is eligible for both the Montgomery GI Bill and the post-911 GI Bill, he or she will at some point have to choose a program. The amounts reimbursed differ some but here are the reimbursements in a nutshell:
The GI Bill reimburses fees and tuition to the school directly and pays housing and book payments directly to you. If the student attends a public or state university, all tuition and fees are paid for full time students. If the student attends a private university, there is a cap of $17,500 annually. Housing allowance is paid for E-5 or better, payable directly to the student. If the student is enrolled in distance learning only, they will only receive one half of the housing allowance. All of the reimbursements and fees are based on length of service.
The GI Bill also pays for trade school and vocational school through a BAH payment during the months of training. The expectation from the GI Bill is that the student is being paid for apprenticeship by the local union or trade school and the GI Bill pays a stipend in the form of a percentage of the BAH. The GI Bill will also pay for books and supplies, depending on the program.
Over 1800 school and universities, (including Georgia Perimeter College who has an active military student population) are working together to assure that veterans will not lose college credit from multiple transfers and duty stations. Other eligible education facilities for the GI Bill funding include flight schools, graduate and undergraduate degrees, licensing, vocational training, on-the-job training, correspondence schools, distance learning schools through the internet, entrepreneurship training and national testing programs. The Service members Opportunity Colleges program (SOC) coordinates the on-duty education credits with the after service attendance so the student can receive all of the educational credits earned, instead of losing credits earned because of military transfers and relocations.

Remembering Memorial Day & providing 18 pages of 2011 Summer Activities
This long Memorial Day Weekend is the traditional kickoff of summer but let's also remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, as it is a time to honor and reflect on the sacrifices made by Americans in combat to secure our freedoms.
For the last several years I have been receiving various lists of Summer activities available in the Atlanta area and I always found them helpful in finding something to do with my boys. I just received an 18 page document that was complied by two ladies living in the Alpharetta / Roswell area and since I wanted to share this information with a wide audience but didn't want to unwittingly share their private email addresses, I have edited them out for that reason only. Though I do believe the list is credible and reliable, you might want to phone first on some of these events. I hope you find this list worthwhile as my wife and I do. Thanks, John
