DeKalb Sanitation Recycle Bin Trade-In Events for Dunwoody Residents - Brook Run Oct 14 / City Hall Oct 22

The city has coordinated with DeKalb Sanitation to host two recycle bin trade-in events here in Dunwoody on October 14 and on October 22. DeKalb County Sanitation Division is requiring residents to switch to a new standard 35-gallon recycle roll cart (or an upgraded 65-gallon recycle roll cart) to replace the existing 18-gallon bins and 40-gallon bags as part of the residential single-stream recycling program.

Existing subscribers with 18-gallon bins must trade them in by April 30, 2018, for a complimentary 35-gallon roll cart or, for a $15 fee, subscribers can choose a 65-gallon roll cart. Existing subscribers must trade in/return the 18-gallon recycling bin prior to obtaining the complimentary 35-gallon roll cart or the 65-gallon roll cart.

The City of Dunwoody has coordinated with DeKalb Sanitation to offer two bin trade-in events in Dunwoody.

1. Saturday October 14, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Brook Run Park (4770 North Peachtree Road, parking lot adjacent to the skate park)

2. Sunday October 22, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Dunwoody City Hall (41 Perimeter Center East, parking lot)

To register for a Dunwoody bin trade-in event please visit the Parks Registration Portal ( https://secure.rec1.com/GA/dunwoody-ga/catalog ). Select the 'DeKalb Sanitation Recycle Bin Trade-in' event tab and then select the event you would like to attend to make your trade-in. You will need to create an account with the Parks Registration Portal. After “Checkout” is complete please View/Print the residential curbside single-stream recycling subscription form and bring that along with cash or check (if you choose to upgrade to the 65-gallon roll cart it will cost $15) to your selected event and DeKalb County Sanitation will handle the swap.

Participants will need to bring in a completed residential curbside single-stream recycling subscription form. The completed form must be presented along with an existing 18-gallon recycling bin for trade-in. Following the bin trade-ins, subscribers can take home a new roll cart or coordinate a roll cart home delivery with the Sanitation Department (delivery estimated at 10 business days.) Only cash or checks will be accepted at the event for payment of the $15 fee for the 65-gallon roll cart upgrade.

Not able to make the two bin trade-in events in Dunwoody? Not to worry, subscribers can also trade-in existing 18-gallon bins in person at the Sanitation Division’s administrative office, 3720 Leroy Scott Drive, Decatur GA 30032.

DeKalb's Lee May comes to Dunwoody and a bunch of other Dunwoody tidbits.

I enjoyed a little time away.

I stepped away from computers and work responsibilities to play in the sand in Orange Beach, AL with my family for a bit & I hope your spring break was as refreshing and joyous as mine.  Where did you go?

Sunday evening (April 12 @ 7:30 pm) I will be attending the monthly Dunwoody Homeowners Association Meeting where Interim DeKalb CEO Lee May will be in attendance giving us an update (I will be listening attentively) and there will be updates on the Dunwoody Village Parkway Condos and the Georgia Power Tree Cutting Program.  Trees Atlanta and the Stage Door Players will also be visiting to raise a few issues.  DeKalb Cultural Arts Center (Room 4) 5339 Chamblee-Dunwoody Road

I have attended the annual Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) in the past at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta and the ceremony is quite moving.  This year the ceremony is Sunday April 12, 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The intersection of Spalding Drive and Mount Vernon Road will close for road construction starting Monday, April 13, according to the city of Sandy Springs. Please use Dunwoody Club as a Detour.

Monday night is a Dunwoody City Council Meeting - I am excited about approving the next segment of the Brook Run Trail as well as installing another park.

Lemonade Days starts Wednesday April 15th and runs through the weekend.  I will probably be there every day of the event but if you have children who want to ride the rides; may I suggest that Wednesday & Thursday will be the easiest and most economical option if you can swing it.   Lines are short or non-existent compared to Fri / Sat / Sun.  Here is the $5 off coupon - in fact three

The hours will be from 9:00 AM to 5:00PM. The public is invited and there is no fee.

Tuesday Night Kids Swim Season is soon upon us and Rick Callahan is prognosticating once again as to who is going to beat whom.  The full schedule is here.   If you do not belong to a local swim tennis association but have a child who would like to swim on a swim team, please reach out to Dunwoody North as we welcome everybody!  If you live in the area and want to join what I consider the best swim tennis club in Dunwoody where my bride is the social director and I can be found playing water volleyball on weekends; please check us out.

Kudos to Dunwoody Crime Analyst Amanda Head - the behind the scenes numbers cruncher works to keep us all safe.   I bet many readers could guess where this story happened?

Norcross offering Shreding services, Paint and Electronic Recycling on Saturday April 9th

The City of Norcross is holding their annual Recycling Day this Saturday, April 9th near City Hall from 9 am until 1 pm. They have added paint recycling to the usual paper shredding and electronics recycling, all open to the public. Participants are encouraged to donate non perishable food items for their area food pantry. Proceeds from the small per can paint fee will also benefit the food pantry. Interesting tidbit, I also heard that the reprocessed paint will be returned to them for use in community art projects.

Recap of Feb 15th Dunwoody City Council Work Session

Below are the items discussed with links to the documents and my comments.

1. EMS response discussion.  (deferred for guest speaker who missed but I am learning of gaps in EMS coverage in City.)

2. Solid Waste Management Plan discussion. (Suggested we adopt DeKalb's plan.)

3. Recycling options discussion. (I see gains to be made in recycling rate without charging more to residents.)

4. Appointment of four additional members to Design Review Advisory Committee.  (Mayor's decision, he missed meeting.)

5. Wintercrest subdivision street renaming discussion.  (I would hate to change my address but for safety sake these residents decided to do it.)

6. Residential fire suppression sprinkler systems discussion. (I'm on the fence for future single family construction, not happy with the cost estimates given by staff but believe that cluster homes may need more protection.)

7. Ordinance to amend Chapter 16 Offenses and Violations re: Noise.  (Though I understand peace and quiet is desired in residential Dunwoody, I think more harm than good would come from the change in commercial districts.)

8. Discussion of text amendment for regulation of taxi cabs

9. Town and Gown discussion. (Would like to see a Dunwoody HS Student serving on committee.)

10. 2010 City Council Meeting Schedule. (Council cutting back to two meetings per month, 2nd & 4th Monday.)

Dunwoody schedules public forums on sanitation options for city.

The City of Dunwoody is investigating possible alternatives for sanitation and recycling services that meet or exceed current levels of services. At this point, we are only gathering and sharing information, not making changes. The information gathered will help Mayor and Council decide if they want to make changes in the future to our sanitation and recycling services provided.

Public Forums

As such, the City is hosting a series of informational forums to share more information about our current service provision and possible alternatives. Each forum will include short presentations with ample opportunity for question and answer.

  • Thursday, September 17th – 7:00 p.m. – Sanitation Provision Options
  • Wednesday, September 23rd – 10:00 a.m. – Comparing and Contrasting to other Cities
  • Tuesday, September 29th – 7:00 p.m. – More Sanitation Provision Options and Recycling

Each of the forums will be held in the Dunwoody City Council Chambers located on the 1st floor at 41 Perimeter Center East, Dunwoody, GA 30346.

Additional Information

Under the leadership of Mayor and Council, staff began evaluating the potential for outsourcing sanitation services. At the City Council Work Session on July 20th, Jeff Timler, Special Projects Manager/Director of Sustainability presented a memo in response to Council’s interest in the potential for outsourcing sanitation services. Click here to read the memo. After discussion, Council tapped the Sustainability Commission to do additional research and asked staff to proceed with a series of public forums to share information and gather opinions from Dunwoody residents and businesses.

Are you Blue?

Wondering what you can do about climate change? Here’s an idea;

DeKalb County Sanitation runs a recycling program that retrieves your paper, cans, glass and plastics in one easy chore. Sign up for a blue bin and bags and every Wednesday, DeKalb trucks will pick up your recyclables at your curb.

Why recycle? If we recycled just 1.7 million tons of the millions of tons of aluminum, paper, glass and plastic thrown away annually in Georgia we would,

*Conserve 4% of the total energy consumed in a year within our state which equals the transportation energy consumed by over one million Georgians annually.

*Conserve over 7 million barrels of oil! (Stats from Ga. Recycling Coalition)

DeKalb County Recycling trucks go directly to SP Recycling in Forest Park for the load to be processed and sent on to be used in remanufacturing.

Neighbor is telling neighbor. Some streets in Dunwoody North have no blue bins at the curb yet Stonington Drive, a two block street, sports 10 blue bins on recycling day. Congratulations, Stonington Drive!

If you recycle, won’t you please tell your neighbors about your experience; how it saves you gas, time and energy and gives you that “feel good” feeling about doing your part?

Recycling in DeKalb involves just a one-time fee, $15 for use of the blue bin. It also costs $15 for a supply of blue bags that last for years and there is no service fee ever. That’s it! That’s what DeKalb Sanitation must charge because by law, the program has to be self-sustaining.

For more information about recycling at home and at school call DeKalb Sanitation, Sheri Arnold, Recycling Coordinator at 404-294-2900 or e-mail: Sanitation@co.dekalb.ga.us or look up the website: www.co.dekalb.ga.us/publicwrks/sanitation.htm.

Thanks,

Doraville follows Chamblee's lead by requiring energy efficient large buildings.

Last week the Doraville City Council unanimously approved a measure, requiring all private development 20,000 square feet or greater to become LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified. The ordinance will also apply to future municipal buildings regardless of size. This move was done on the heels of the City of Chamblee doing the exact same thing in March of this year.

Going green isn't cheap. Meeting the benchmarks to receive accreditation from the U.S. Green Building Council, the nonprofit that created and oversees the standards for sustainable building, can cost about 6 percent more than traditional construction.

Supporters argue that developers recoup those costs in about four years because of energy savings.

Major developers in Chamblee and now Doraville have thrown their support to the ordinance, in part because of other economic considerations by being on the cutting edge of a new trend.

Will the new city council be deciding to follow in the foot steps of our neighbors, Chamblee, Doraville & Decatur? If after reasonable research, seeing how others are doing it and discussions with Dunwoody residents shows it to be the right thing to do, they just may.

Welcome to a Sustainable Dunwoody

The Heneghan family is back from our yearly vacation to Chicago where we split half our time visiting Kristin's family on the farm and then my family in the city. A good time was had by all!

With the creation of the City of Dunwoody, blogs are popping up all over and Pattie at Sustainable Dunwoody has created one that I will be reading on a regular basis. In fact with only a week in existence, she and I seem to see eye to eye on making Dunwoody a walkable & bikeable city, with ample green space for enjoyable living. (Point taken Pattie on the bike racks, they should be added to the City's Comprehensive Transportation Plan along with the bike lanes and curb cuts.)

I still have much to learn on sustainable businesses and sustainable food but I have already been researching the Oakhurst Community Garden for it to possibly be duplicated at the available Brook Run greenhouse or maybe at the Donaldson Chesnut House (Vermack & Chamblee Dunwoody Rd)?

Pattie is planning an aggressive schedule, check back often.
* Monday: Sustainable Business (sole proprietors, small businesses, large corporations and everything in between)

* Tuesday: Sustainable Food (local organic farm and prepared food via grocery stores, farmers markets and CSAs as well as community and home gardens)

* Wednesday: Sustainable Transportation (commute alternatives, new technologies, urban planning, and did I hear talk about kudzu as a bio-fuel?!)

* Thursday: Sustainable Greenspace (parks, nature preserves, pesticide-reduction, unstructured outdoor play, and community beautification that encourages outdoor exploration and enjoyment)

* Friday: Sustainable Neighborhood (walkability, safe routes to school, lawn reduction, backyard wildlife habitats, edible landscapes, rain harvesting, increased home efficiency, solar power, etc.)
Pattie defines sustainability, when applied to urban and suburban environments, as the creation of health, wealth and community while retaining and restoring natural resources. The goals of a sustainable community, as she defines it, are to have:
* A vibrant local economy of small businesses supported by citizens as well as responsible corporations that tread lightly on the land and give back to the community

* Robust neighborhoods that enhance social capital and increase safety

* Transportation alternatives that reduce dependence on automobiles and encourage the health of citizens

* Recreation opportunities that enable safe free play and interaction with nature

* A secure, affordable local food system

* Active protection and enhancement of natural resources such as green spaces, the local watershed, and the air we collectively breathe

* Educational opportunities that enable our children to develop in 360-degree awareness of the world in which they live

Electronics Recycling @ Brook Run, Saturday May 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

4770 North Peachtree Road
Dunwoody, Georgia 30338

Keep DeKalb Beautiful will offer residents of DeKalb County and metro Atlanta another opportunity to recycle their old electronic items properly and reduce the environmental liability of hazardous material entering Seminole Landfill.

It’s estimated that there are at least 4.4 million PCs and 8 million Televisions in 3 million households in Georgia. This e-waste will eventually become 334,800 tons of e-waste that will end up in our landfills.

Our goal is to promote the recovery, reuse and recycling of obsolete electronic equipment, and to encourage the design, manufacture and purchase of environmentally responsible electronic equipment.

For further details on the equipment accepted for recycling, click here.

For details on "recycling" a 42 inch or larger plasma flat screen TV along with the accompanying Wii system, please click here.

Electronic Waste Recycling Day - Sat @ Turner Field

Atlanta City Councilmember Carla Smith will host the city's annual Electronic Waste Recycling Day on Saturday, April 26 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the GOLD Lot of Turner Field.

Residents are encouraged to bring their old computers and household electronics to this Earth Day event. An astounding 75,583 of electronic items were collected in 2007 – the largest amount ever collected. "We are out to beat that record," said City Councilmember Carla Smith, whose office has hosted E-Waste Recycling Day for the past six years.

"Each year we collect more electronics than the year before, which shows there is a tremendous need for residents to properly dispose of these unwanted items." The goal of this initiative is to promote the recovery, reuse, and recycling of obsolete electronic equipment and to encourage the design, manufacture, and purchase of environmentally responsible electronic equipment. The electronics industry is one of the fastest growing and most innovative industries in the world. Every year, newer and better products are being sold to consumers. While electronics account for up to five percent of landfill volume, the products contribute up to 70 percent of the toxins found in landfills.

The following items will be accepted at the city of Atlanta's E-Waste Recycling Day:
  • Computer monitors
  • Televisions ($10 fee required)
  • Microwave ovens
  • Computer cpu's
  • Stereos
  • Telephones
