Girl Scout Troop 16434 received Silver Award for installing a STEAM Lab at Kingswood Preschool in Dunwoody.

FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR KINGSWOOD PRESCHOOLERS
THANKS TO GIRL SCOUT TROOP 16434’S NEWLY CREATED STEAM LAB

Girl Scout Troop 16434, formed nine years ago as kindergarten students at Chesnut Elementary School, has announced today the completion of their Silver Award project, a  STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) Lab, which will benefit the students a Kingswood United Methodist Church Preschool now and in the future.

The Silver Award is the second highest award of the Girl Scouts and one of the highest awards that a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. The four 14-year-old Cadettes in Troop 16434 strategized and created the preschool’s new STEAM Lab by researching what they would like the lab to include, and then meeting with church and school leadership before implementing their plan. Troop 16434 raised funds for the project to come to fruition through a homemade dog treat bake sale and by soliciting community donations. As a result of the diligent and dedicated work of Troop 16434, The Kingswood Preschool students will benefit from weekly STEAM-related lessons in the STEAM Lab.

Congratulations Ladies, great job !!!

Megan Fitzgerald, a Senior at Dunwoody High School earns the Girl Scout Gold Award with her project entitled “Planting Seeds for Life”.

Megan Fitzgerald is a senior at Dunwoody High School and has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten.  She just completed her Girl Scout Gold Award entitled “Planting Seeds for Life”.

During the quarantine, Megan passed time growing plants to liven up her room. To share her love of gardening with other students, she founded a new club at DHS: the Horticulture Club. The club met for educational presentations (thanks to Dunwoody North neighbors Chuck White and neighborhood Certified Georgia Naturalist Sarah Sanke) and worked on projects to beautify the Dunwoody area.

Working with the Donaldson Banister Farm, Megan created a landscape plan for the area around the flagpole, then raised money to purchase plants, and installed them with the help of Horticulture Club members. The club also partnered with the DHS HART Club to decorate and install birdhouses throughout the trail behind the DHS baseball fields, and to install additional plantings in the DHS courtyard.

As these projects grow, and the Horticulture Club continues in the upcoming years, Megan hopes that the seeds she planted will take root to keep Dunwoody growing and to inspire other students to continue learning!

Dunwoody's Maxine Spencer completed the "Crochet for the Kids" Girl Scouts Gold Award Project and is on her way to receiving highest honor.

Maxine Spencer is a senior at Dunwoody High School, and has been a Girl Scout since Troop 13590 formed when she was in the 2nd grade at Chesnut Elementary. She is now in the process of submitting her final paperwork to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award. She chose a project that involved helping children since this is important to her as a babysitter, lifeguard, and swim coach. She learned to crochet stuffed animals in 2020, and then researched ways to craft a project that would utilize her crochet skills and ultimately benefit children. Maxine then created patterns for two different stuffed animals: an octopus and a frog, and started recruiting crochet helpers through Facebook groups and local connections.

Maxine partnered with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) on the project, and she fund raised for the materials that would be used by her volunteer Dunwoody and Chamblee crochet team. Maxine sold crocheted hats, got donated items from her troop, and did some babysitting to earn the money for the crochet materials. Once she raised the funds to launch the project, Maxine then created patterns for two different stuffed animals. Next, she created kits with yarn, stuffing, and the printed patterns which she provided to each volunteer crochet team member.  In late July of 2022, Maxine, along with her team of Dunwoody and Chamblee crocheters, donated over 40 crocheted stuffed animals to CHOA. The stuffed animals can be given as comfort items to patients receiving care at CHOA.

Maxine is very grateful to all of the volunteers who supported her project, and is honored that her patterns and instructions are now included in the CHOA Volunteer toolkit so that local crocheters have the opportunity to support her project for years to come. If you would like to get additional information on crocheting for the "Crochet for the Kids" project, please reach out to the CHOA Donations coordinator, Julia Ward via Julia.ward@choa.org or email cforthekids@gmail.com.

Dunwoody Scout Troops 477 and 1919 to host Blood Drive at Kingswood Church on Sunday, March 27 from 9:00 to 4:00

Save a Life – Donate Blood!

Scout Troops 477 and 1919 to host Blood Drive at Kingswood Church on Sunday, March 27 from 9:00 to 4:00.

There is currently a severe blood shortage.  Donating blood is a selfless act by one person to help save the lives of others. Blood cannot be manufactured, and local hospitals rely on blood donors to make sure blood is on the shelf to help patients in their moment of need. Approximately 37 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, yet less than 10 percent donate annually.

You can help by signing up to give blood.  The whole process can take as little as 45 minutes.  Walk-ins are welcome but by signing up we can make sure we are ready for you and staffed appropriately.  A supervised game area for kids of ages will be available!

To save a spot (and pre-register to save some time), go to http://appt.lifesouth.org/BSA

Address of Kingswood is 4896 N Peachtree Road, Dunwoody, Georgia 30338

Donors must be 16 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, and show a photo I.D.  16-year-olds require written parental permission.

Scouting Fun and Adventure for Dunwoody Area Youth - Open House event for Prospective Scouts Saturday from 1:30 to 3 pm at Kingswood Church

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpW6I4rueWQ

The isolation of the Pandemic has been especially hard for our youth. Scouts BSA offers an opportunity for Boys and Girls to safely meet new friends, participate in fun activities and go on challenging adventures. Along the way, youth learn life skills, leadership, self-reliance, and are mentored by more experienced Scouts. Scouts learn how to make good decisions based in the ethical and moral practices of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

Scouting is fun, like in this Scouts BSA Video, and the health and safety is always a top priority.  All our programs are currently outside and follow Covid safety guidelines. In addition, trained adult leaders make sure that all Youth Protection Guidelines are strictly followed. We also sponsor safety programs including Drug and Alcohol Awareness, Cyber Security, Swimming and First Aid.

Kingswood Church sponsors both a Boys Troop and a Girls Troop for youth in Middle and High School. We invite any Families with youth currently in 5th grade or older to join us on April 17th from 1:30 to 3:00 at our Scout Area at the Kingswood Church Campus. Troop 1919 and Troop 477 will help your youth join them for some fun games.  There will also be information available for parents.

Directions: 4896 N Peachtree Rd, Dunwoody, GA 30338 <https://goo.gl/maps/MiAE2hCTnqqHcUeM8>  The Scout Area is adjacent to Tilly Milly Road; when facing the front entrance of the church, head left towards the back of the building.  You will see parking and people before you get to the back.

Kingswood Scouting believes that Scouts BSA should be available to every youth and helps make Scouting affordable, with financial assistance now available. A Family Cub Scout Pack is also available to Boys and Girls in Kindergarten through 5th grade.

You may contact our Scoutmasters for more information about their Troop or this Open House:
