Dunwoody High hosts Georgia High School Girls State Gymnastics Meet - Saturday April 14th - 10 a.m. @OfficialGHSA

State gymnastics  meet comes to Dunwoody
Dunwoody High School Gym
5035 Vermack Rd, Dunwoody
Saturday - April 14
10:00 am start - $7.00 at the door.

I have three teenage boys and know absolutely nothing about girls gymnastics except that Perimeter Gymnastics at the MJCCA in Dunwoody is a great local program and that my friend and former President of the Dunwoody Homeowners Association, Ms. Stacey Harris runs the show over there.

Anyway, I ran across the fact that Dunwoody High School will be hosting the preliminary Georgia High School Girls Gymnastics State Meet on Saturday morning and that if I had a little girl interested in the sport that it might be quality low cost entertainment for the morning; so I figured I would share.

Doors open at 10 am and the top 16 schools in the state will be participating.

Dunwoody Junior Wildcats Football Program starting this year.

The Dunwoody Junior Wildcat Football program is available for rising 6th – 8th-grade athletes living in the Dunwoody High School District who want to be a part of the Wildcat family sooner than later. Our focus is on the development and growth of football players who will ultimately play for the high school.

Varsity Head Coach Mike Nash and his staff will select the coaches for each grade and ensure they are teaching their principles to create consistency from 6th grade through 12th. Registration will cover shoulder pads, helmets, and game jerseys.  Practices will take place Monday, Tuesday & Thursday nights with games being played on Saturday.  The team will be part of the Georgia Middle School Athletic Association and will be played under their tight rules limiting contact.

2nd Annual Dunwoody Wildcat Classic Golf Tournament - Tuesday June 6th - Rivermont Golf Club

http://birdeasepro.com/WildcatClassic

The Dunwoody Gridiron Club announces and invites you to participate in the
2nd Annual Wildcat Classic Golf Tournament.
Please save the date of June 6th, 2017
at Rivermont Golf Club in Johns Creek GA.

Get ready to enjoy another beautiful day of Golf, Beverages, Birdies and Fellowship as we take another big step in putting the Wildcats back on the field Stronger, Faster and most importantly as a united team!  The 2016 inaugural Wildcat Cup was a huge success.  While we didn't give away the $10,000 HOLE-IN-ONE prize we did provide many other prizes.  Some of the highly sought after auction items were: "Coach for a Game" and "Homecoming coin Toss".  Perhaps one of best prizes of the day was what the winner of the 50/50 raffle did with his over $900 winnings???  Don't miss this exciting event.  You can't imagine how much your presence adds significantly to its success and ultimately the entire program.  The only level of involvement that is too small is no involvement.

Thanks so much for your attendance and we look forward to seeing you June 6th.
Dunwoody Wildcats Football is a growing athletic presence at Dunwoody High school. Wildcat football has had a rich tradition in the football program over the years. With a recent revitalization, the Wildcats are experiencing amazing growth. In 2015 there were only 17 registered players! Excitement has grown and now for the upcoming 2017 season we are looking at over 100 student athletes.

Dunwoody High school excels in providing world-class academics to its students and with your help can provide further support in their athletic involvement. We look forward to the future and to growing a well-rounded student that is not just excellent academically, but a talented athlete as well.

Dunwoody Wildcats need your support for this growing and dynamic team. As the Wildcats move up in classification we need to stay competitive in our resources and offer the best for our existing and future athletes. Your support will give athletes the opportunity to further their character and enhance their physical talents and work ethics. Your sponsorship and donations to this event will help facilitate training camps, enhance a completely outdated locker room and new athletic facilities, as well as general needs the program will face during this exciting growth period.

The Wildcat Classic is a fun-filled day of golfing and fellowship. Last year we had 80 golfers and raised nearly $14,000. This year looks to be just as exciting.

We will start the day with breakfast before hitting the greens. Coach Nash will be making his way through the course offering encouragement and thanking you for your support. The event will also include a silent auction, raffle and swag bags.

Thank you for your donations and support! Help us grow "the Wildcat Way.. with Wildcat Pride!"

Dunwoody High School Football Schedule for 2017 & notes on the program.

Dear John,

“Don’t let the thing you have control over be the thing that beats you. Always outwork your competition.” Tandy Geralds (Woodlawn)

Our football players have been working hard and are realizing huge gains.

I guarantee you that you will see a stronger version of Dunwoody Wildcats Football this season.

The thing that makes me smile the most is the fact that we have 23 eighth graders participating in the strength and conditioning program at 6:30 AM, three days a week …

Go Junior Wildcats!

AND NOW ….. IT IS TIME FOR OUR LIFT-A-THON!

We are asking each player to raise a minimum of $200.

This fundraiser is specifically for our summer program and will be used to pay for camps, 7on7 events, etc.

On Friday, March 24th @ 5:30 in the gym, we will have the boys complete their Dead-lift and Power Clean maxes.

The 24th will be open to all parents and donors to come out and see how well the boys are doing and cheer them on.

Please help us to make this event successful.

My wife (Denise) and I were eating a Greek salad and calzone at Empire State Pizza and Growlers and everything is always so tasty there.

I tell the owner (Todd) that he really should think about bottling his Greek dressing.

Empire State Pizza is a Wildcats Football sponsor and the football players like to eat there on Thursday nights for the 50 cent “wings”.

Empire Pizza is located at the junction of Peeler and Winters Chapel Roads and is well worth the drive.

Please support those that support us.

And finally ……..

Wildcat Classic Golf Tournament - June 6th

We are ready to go …. More details at the following link;

GHSA new region alignments affect Dunwoody area schools sports programs.

If you are a high school sports fanatic or are someone who has kids who play, this might be the biggest news of the week as it may completely turn next years schedules around offering new opponents and different commutes.

The Georgia High School Association recently announced new alignments and a new Class 7A moved a lot of schools around. Dunwoody High School is now up in Class 6A with most of the North Fulton schools and Pope in East Cobb whereby we seem totally disengaged from DeKalb County Schools who are all in Class 5A. SPX and Marist are in 4A but play in different regions therefore may only see each other in the playoffs.

Today the reclassification committee placed schools in regions after taking requests from schools choosing to play in higher classifications. On Dec. 7-8, the GHSA will hear appeals regarding region placement. On Jan. 13, the GHSA’s executive committee will ratify the reclassification.

Dunwoody Girls Win State Cross Country Championship. @DunwoodyXC

Samantha Cameron - surprised herself by winning the GA XC State Cross Country Championship

Excerpt from a post on the DHS XC Website from Coach Boucher and photos by Ken Langley can be purchased here.

On one of the wettest and muddiest days in State Cross Country history in Georgia, the Dunwoody Wildcats came ready for the conditions and exceeded expectations with a very memorable day.  It was a historic day for all that were there, and we’re all still trying to recover from the shock and excitement!

The boys started off the day on the muddy Carrollton course determined to improve on their 21st place showing in 2014.  They did just that, with a strong 19th place finish for the young team.  The boys were led by Sam Mahle, who capped a remarkable Freshman year by finishing 46th overall in the boys 5A race (the 4th fastest Freshman in the race), and also saw strong races from Jackson Watson and Sasha Herod.  Overall, it was a strong finish to the boys season in tough conditions, and has the coaching staff excited for 2016 and beyond.  Full race results for the boys can be found here.

As the girls toed the line, the skies opened up, to the delight of the team that had prepared by running in mud all week.  As the girls race unfolded, it was clear that Dunwoody was well prepared to seize on the opportunity in front of them, moving up throughout the race.  Surprising everyone (including herself) Samantha Cameron found herself in the lead halfway through the race and charged home as the Girls 5A State Champion, followed closely behind by teammate Kelly May Sheehan in 2nd place.  Senior Ansley Heavern also earned Individual Honors for her 8th place finish.  Senior Ann-Marie Sills moved up throughout the race to provide a much needed boost as the 4th runner for the team, followed closely by teammates Ally Womble, Callie Dill, and Julia Echols.  When the mud (not dust) had settled, the Wildcats had successfully defended their State Championship, defeating Creekview HS 70 to 113!  Full race results for the girls can be found here.

This is the girls 3rd State Championship in 4 years, which puts them in a class of very few schools in Georgia.  They are the most decorated girls cross country team in DeKalb County history, and have established a proud legacy and tradition.  Samantha Cameron is the 2nd Individual State Champion for DHS, following in the footsteps of her sister, Alex, who won the crown in 2012.  Ansley Heavern and Ann-Marie Sills will finish their cross country careers having run on three State Championship teams, a feat shared by few in the entire state of Georgia!

There are countless other stats that could be produced, but what is more important was the girls effort and attitude on Saturday.  They did not back down from tough conditions and ran with a purpose to finish the day as the strongest team, and they accomplished that.  The coaching staff could not be prouder of their efforts, along with the efforts of alternates Chloe Thomas, Sophia Tarrago, Julie Hensley, Kate Marion, and Olivia Vergura to train hard and prepare to race as well.

It was another great day for Dunwoody!

Upcoming Dunwoody Community events and the need for a consolidated City directory of services and activities.

The City of Dunwoody is blessed to have a very active non-profit network of organizations, churches, synagogs, schools and even a few local colleges that provide programing to the community that the city government could never dream of duplicating.  Below are a few events & classes happening in just the next two weeks at the Atlanta Jewish Community Center and they are all open to the public.

FYI: I am in discussions with city staff to put an effort into cataloging all of the many "programs" available to the community.  For example: If a new family wanted to know who offered basketball leagues for 8 yr old's or what Senior Activities were available; there should be one universal guidebook filled with copious amounts of information and a few ads to cover the printing charges.  The guidebook could be available around town and in an electronic format, with updates several times through the year.

I guess my thinking is that if the City is not going to offer the programing, we should be consolidating and offering the information to the residents so that they are aware of what is available.   Though the discussions are preliminary, an eventual joint Public / Private Directory of Services & Activities available in Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville & Peachtree Corners is a lofty goal to aspire to but one worth working on.  The Dunwoody recreation staffing model is lean but this project could easily be contracted out.  John
