Atlanta Veterans Job Fair at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Thursday June 21st. @RecruitMilitary

On June 21st I will be visiting the Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the first time and I can't think of a more rewarding reason as I will be searching for possible candidates with military service to fill a possible upcoming Federal vacancy where I work.

The Federal hiring process is not an easy one to navigate as most jobs are advertised on the USAjobs website and interested applicants typically apply on-line.  There are a few special hiring authorities that sidestep this on-line process and when it comes to Veterans, the Veterans’ Recruitment Appointment (VRA) is an excepted authority that allows agencies, to appoint eligible veterans without competition.

Hypothetically, if I was looking to fill a future Federal law enforcement or investigator type position in Atlanta, someone who had an attention to detail regarding regulatory issues, someone with Spanish language skills, who also had the ability to understand chemistry and technical engineer drawings; then you could possibly be hired without formal competition as long as your resume was accurate and your dd214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Military Duty) showed the proper requirements for VRA consideration.

There are currently 84 exhibitors scheduled to be in attendance looking to hire veterans & transitioning military personnel therefore if you have served this country with honor and are looking for a change in employment, please come out with plenty of resumes to talk to those who may have positions available.

Maybe I'll see you there?

Do you know someone who would be a great Dunwoody Police Officer - applications are now being accepted from a wider pool of applicants.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWhVTVtw9KI
The men and women of the Dunwoody Police Department are committed to providing excellent service to the citizens of Dunwoody. As an outward symbol of that commitment for 2016, Chief Grogan asked members of the department to provide #oneword that symbolized their individual commitment to our mission and to the people of Dunwoody.

Since the Dunwoody Police Department started soon after incorporation, I can assure you that our hiring standards were very rigorous and we only accepted experianced applicants who were police officers in other jurisdictions who passed extensive background checks and had a spotless record.

With the compitition escalating for quality police officers between various jurisdictions and the Department not being able to maintain a level of being fully staffed, it appears by looking at the most recent job announcement that the Department has stepped away from the requirement of needing to be P.O.S.T. certified (namely from another agency).  I welcome this change as it opens oppertunities for quality individuals coming out of the military, professionals looking for a carreer change and it probabbly offers a wider diversity as well as more home grown officers who have deep ties to the community.

If you know a candidate who might make a fine Dunwoody Police Officer, please pass on this announcement.  Thanks,  John

State Farm announces 1,500 jobs coming to Dunwoody, GA @StateFarm

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogIeuTMX1WE

Georgia's largest home and auto insurer is on a hiring binge, and raising wage as well.

Channel 2 Consumer Investigator Jim Strickland broke the news on Twitter Thursday morning that State Farm would add 1,500 more employees to its Atlanta operations by year's end.

The company's starting minimum wage is climbing from near $13 per hour to $15.50.

Ryan Lewis told Strickland that he got a raise his second day on the job.

"Anytime someone says, 'You’re going to get this,' and then says, 'Oh, by the way, we're going to give you more,' that's a great feeling," he said.

The wage adjustment is hoped to better attract that new crop of workers.

"We're looking for jobs in our customer contact centers. So we're looking for people that are experienced in customer service, sales, maybe have some retail background," said recruiter Alana O'Neal.

Atlanta is one of three State Farm regional hubs. The company, now spread out in nine buildings, will centralize in a new 1.5 million square-foot tower near Perimeter Mall.

"Our presence in Atlanta will be about 8,000 (employees) when this is done, most of whom will be based here," said State Farm spokesman Justin Tomczak.

The company stresses more than half of those new workers will qualify to start above the new $15.50 minimum.

State Farm is taking applications for those new jobs on their website.

Dunwoody area news - Trees gone, Factory going away, Doraville Strippers might be on way out and more Police Wanted in Chamblee

Trees clearcut to improve billboard visibility along Savoy Drive

The negative effects of Georgia’s billboard law have hit home for residents and visitors in the cities of Chamblee and Dunwoody as trees and vegetation were recently completely clear-cut along I-285 on Savoy Drive. (2011 HB 179 - Millar, Taylor & Jacobs all voted No.)

Residents were stunned when all of a sudden the trees and vegetation serving as natural visual, sound and air pollution barriers were gone. To make matters worse, the cleared land was filled with tons of litter and trash, previously obscured from sight by all the ground vegetation.

Doraville GM Plant Demolition officially begins to make way for a ‘city within a city’

The Doraville General Motors (GM) Assembly Plant demolition officially began in earnest Friday.   A ceremony was held to commemorate the event where a group of Federal, State, County and Local Government Officials – as well as citizens who once worked at the assembly plant – joined Integral Group Chairman and CEO Egbert Perry who talked briefly about the projects history and its future. Doraville Mayor Donna Pittman spoke to attendees about the great promise the new development holds for her city and the region.

Oasis and Doraville argue their cases in Georgia’s Supreme Court

Doraville’s counsel holds tightly to their claim that “nude conduct in sexually oriented businesses is not protected speech under the Georgia Constitution.” Bergthold argues that the regulations Doraville has imposed on Oasis are almost identical to those Brookhaven imposed on the Pink Pony.

The Supreme Court of Georgia ruled on Oct. 6 that Brookhaven had the right to ban adult entertainment businesses that sell alcohol. Bergthold says that Doraville has the same right to impose those provisions in their Sexually Oriented Business Ordinance that Brookhaven did.
