City update by Dunwoody Mayor Denis Shortal - Food Truck Thursday's at Brook Run kick off tonight.

Greetings my fellow citizens … the following are some items of interest …

1. Food Truck Thursday … The first Food Truck Thursday of 2019 is tonight, May 2. This is a big one! We will be celebrating our 10th anniversary as a city. The times are 5 - 9 PM and the weather is forecast to be beautiful. So, bring the whole Family, your chairs/blankets and aptitude for good food and a fun time and come on over. Our water feature will also be running for the little ones to enjoy plus there will be a few other surprises. Music is by the Tribute and they will sound a lot like the Allman Brothers. Don’t miss this one!

2. Stage Door Players (SDP) … Proudly presents “Murder in the Vineyard” a Murder Mystery Dinner this Saturday at the Donaldson-Bannister Farm from 6:30 - 10 PM. The Farm is located at the intersection of  Chamblee Dunwoody Rd and Vermack Rd. Yes, you can be part of the detective group in this event which will be led by our own SDP Artistic Director Robert Egizio. 2018 Dunwoody Idol winner Josie James will entertain during the cocktail hour and the catering is by Dunwoody's Marlowe’s Tavern. For tickets call 770-396-1726 Ext 5 or click here Murder in the Vineyard Tickets. All funds go to support the SDP Arts. For you dudes still looking for a Mother’s Day gift there is a raffle item you will not want to miss out on.

3. Dunwoody Farmer’s Market … Annual “Grand Opening” will be this Saturday, May 4, at Brook Run Park. Hours are 8:30 AM - 1200 PM. Speaking on markets, Nel’s fruit and vegetable stand had its annual opening last week. It is located next to Chick-fil-A on Jett Ferry Rd. It is open Monday thru Saturday.

4. Paving … the 2019 paving is moving along smartly … we have 30 of the 57 streets on this years paving list already paved. There will be a lull in our paving until about mid-June when we will finish the rest of the streets.

5. Sink Holes … We have had a few sink holes lately. The causes are various. If you see one during normal working report it immediately to our Public Works Dept. at 678-382-6800. If it happens during non-working hours report it via our Public Works emergency Ph # 678-382-6850.

6. Security … I have mentioned this several times. Please don’t leave anything of value in view in your car. If you do you’re going to become a statistic. Remember it takes the bad guys less than 15 seconds to break into your car. Ladies, when you are shopping, DO NOT leave your purse and/or wallet in your shopping cart as you shop. If you do, sooner or later you will become a statistic. Vigilance is required to prevent these things happening to you or a family member, friend, etc..

7. Brook Run Park … The park is open and will remain open but major construction enhancements are in progress. With good weather, we hope to have the construction complete by DEC 31, 2019. We have completed the resurfacing of the playground in Brook Run Park so the kids can play at Food Trucks tonight.

8. Stream Clean-up … The stream clean-up on APR 13 was a success but we could have used more volunteers. We started at the new trail bridge over Nancy Creek and finish at I-285. We picked up two truckloads of trash of all shapes and sizes. Thanks to all those that volunteered!

9. Lemonade Days and Monarchs and Margaritas … Both of these events were huge successes and are outstanding examples of community spirit building events. All the funds raised go directly into enhancing the Donaldson-Bannister Farm from Lemonade Days and Dunwoody Nature Center from Monarchs and Margaritas. Thanks to the folks at Dunwoody Preservation Trust for running Lemonade Days and the folks at Dunwoody Nature Center for running Monarchs and Margaritas. Thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed themselves. If you missed it this year next year don’t miss Dunwoody Idol … you will see some real talented young singers. Who needs America Idol when we have Dunwoody Idol in our own park!

10. Dunwoody Arts Festival … This popular event will be on May 11 and 12 in Dunwoody Village.

11. I have to run … more in a few days. Please pass this on to your friends, neighbors and members of your HOA. If anyone wants to be added to my email list just let me know. Thanks for all each of you do to make us a city with a family atmosphere. Let’s all work to create the mutual respect that everyone deserves! See you around town!

Let Us Continue to Build Our City Together!

Audio of DCPC and City Council Meetings as well as various other blog updates

April 26 & 29 City Council Meetings

Last week I missed my first couple City Council meetings since the city began and though I wasn't there, I did take steps to have the precedings recorded.

Dunwoody Chamblee Parents Council of May 5

I attended Wednesday mornings DCPC meeting and as I have a tendency to do at public meetings, I recorded it in order to share the presentation with my neighbors. Councilman Robert Wittenstein was there as were Tammy Anderson and Tom Taylor who are both candidates for the state legislature.

I was very impressed with the candor and honesty of Interim Superintendent Ramona Tyson. I won't attempt to give a complete recap of the meeting since the new Dunwoody School Daze blog did such a nice job, but the full audio of the meeting can be found in the links below.

Today was also a DCSS Budget committee meeting and there is a recap here.
Misc Dunwoody Blog updates
Today after I walked my son to school, I attended the Dunwoody Green Market and seemed to buy everything Donna Nall bought except that I also bought Lavender soap and Jalapeno jelly.  On Sunday, Donna & I also spent some quality time at the the Dunwoody Nature Center with our families supporting the Odyssey of the Mind team.  Be sure to look for (and financially support) the team at the Children's area of the the Dunwoody Art Festival this weekend.

I haven't talked to Mayor Wright about his position on eduKALB but I am thankful he is there and I like the goal of the organization.  I don't have much insight but some members of the community do have questions on the organization, fund raising and intentions of the DeKalb Chamber.

Besides buying everything in sight at the farmers market, I'm looking forward to spending some money at the Dunwoody Art Festival this weekend.

The Dunwoody Crier has nothing to fear regarding me or any other blogger on the net.  Bloggers are opinionated blowhards who use the media to reach out to our five or six readers whereas the Crier owns every driveway in town with professional reporters covering in depth the stories that are important to this community.  The rest of us are just hacks - and we know it.

Recap of 29 minute long meeting, City Council members getting stoned and Tomatofest on Wednesday reminder.

Monday's City Council meeting was quick and to the point, lasting only 29 minutes yet we were able to move the cities required business. Since I am currently between houses and without the ability to process audio, this will be the first city council meeting not recorded and posted by me.

Basically as a recap, everything passed as presented with both the City Council Comment and the Lighting Ordinance items being deferred for another time.

After viewing a few recent items on the internet, I think the new City of Dunwoody is operating pretty smoothly, not perfect, but pretty smoothly. If you don't believe me and you are in the mood for a few giggles take a few seconds to click the next couple of links. Thankfully this guy isn't our City Manager, our City Council isn't getting Stoned, and our residents in favor of farmer's markets actually do make relevant public comments.

Talking of Farmer's Markets, I am looking forward to visiting the Dunwoody Farmers Market for the first time this Wednesday located in Dunwoody Village next to the Post Office. I was invited to judge the Dunwoody Tomatofest but my full time job takes priority and I will only be able to stop by enroute.

Finally, Dunwoody boy and girl scouts are needed to help build/set up new community garden at Brook Run Park! Troop leaders and anyone else who is interested, please email Rebecca at dunwoodygarden@gmail.com

Farmers Market approved by City without zoning change.

I was notified that the City of Dunwoody, Office of Community Development granted St. Patrick's Episcopal Church a 90 day permit for the Farmers Market under the provision below which was already part of the code. I understand that discussions with the U.S. Postal Service are still on going and at some point the farmers market may be moving to that location. The final agenda for Monday's city council meeting has not been released but it appears unlikely that the proposed zoning change will take place.

Dunwoody Zoning Code - see page 274 of pdf

Decatur Green Fest & local Farmers Markets

Decatur Green Fest

The third annual Decatur Green Fest, presented by Bonterra Vineyards and hosted by the Dogwood Alliance, will be held on Saturday, May 2 from 3 p.m. until 9:30 p.m on the Decatur Square. The event kicks off the annual Concert on the Square series presented by Wachovia, and features a day of "earth friendly" family fun and music.

In addition to music, the event promises a taste of local and organic food and sampling of Equal Exchange fair-trade items. Terrapin Beer Company, an event partner, and Bonterra Vineyards will be providing their tasty beverages. And for the first time, there will be an exhibition of artists working with recycled materials. Several green building professionals and other green educators will be present. The Decatur Cool City Coalition will lead a "Teaching Tour of Green Buildings" from 1-6 p.m.

One final item...

The ajc has a nice article on communities who are fighting to open farmers markets and the produce which is currently in season at those markets.
