2024 Dunwoody Lemonade Days Festival kicks off Wednesday - suggestions for your visit. @LemonadeDays

Lemonade Days Festival is held at Brook Run Park in Dunwoody (4770 North Peachtree Road) starting Wednesday and here is the current weather forecast as I see it Monday evening.

Dunwoody's Annual Spring Festival, Lemonade Day's presented by the Dunwoody Preservation Trust remembering the tornado of 1998 that flattened sections of our community, snapped trees like twigs and took a mans life has returned to the typical April timeframe this year and it looks like the weather will be great all weekend!  We are once again making Lemonade from Lemons and am hopeful for a sweet event.  A personal thank you to Hope Follmer and all the volunteers & sponsors who assist in making this a fabulous event.

Based on past experience, I can tell you that Wednesday & Thursday are the best days to purchase a wristband for unlimited rides as the crowds are light and the lines extremely short. The cost of wristbands on Wednesday & Thursday is $20.00 but the cost jumps to $30 starting Friday.  If your children don't have after school commitments on these days you may want to visit these days to maximize your ride per dollar ratio as the numbers will typically drop significantly come the weekend.

A large number Middle School Students will make a bee line to Brook Run after school on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday as there is a secure book bag check in area at the festival to ensure those Chromebooks do not get lost.  Middle Schooler's running in packs at Lemonade Day's without direct parental oversight is a right of passage for many as the park is safe because the crowd is all local until about 7 pm on Friday when the carnival area is taken over by teenagers & college kids with cars.  Friday night usually gets busy and then on Saturday and Sunday the park is over run with visitors from near & far.

Parents, please note that there is now a dedicated drop off / pick up point in the new parking lot as you enter Brook Run on Peeler Rd and take a left immediately after crossing the walking / bike trail as this location has easy access into the park, a well lit parking lot with a pavilion and a restroom.

Besides the carnival rides, the food choices for festival goers will include everything from hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken and BBQ to foods with a tropical, Italian, Greek and/or Hispanic flair. For those just wanting a snack, there will be popcorn, funnel cakes and pretzels and for a cool treat yogurt, Italian ice and ice cream. Cold craft and domestic beer and delicious wine are also available.

Food venders include:  Chick-fil-A Dunwoody     Coco Bongo Tropical Delights     Country Cabin Sweets & Treats     Greek Tavern     Mexican Fiesta     King of Pops     The Mad Italian     Midway Munchies     Bid Daddy Dane’s BBQ     PTR Concessions     Repicci’s Italian Ice     Roy’s Royal Dogs     Shock Top, Lemon Shandy & Bud Light     Soul Truckin Good     Top Job Wine

The 2024 Dunwoody Authors Bookstore at Lemonade Days (open Saturday & Sunday) is delighted to bring you local authors and friends! Each of the featured authors will have their fabulous works for purchase at the booth and will be available to sign your copy.  Check the schedule here.

Another highlight of the festival is the Children's Petting Zoo & Pony Rides which is only available on Saturday & Sunday; the weekend also brings various vendors at the County Store selling arts & crafts, there is music everyday starting Thursday and then there is the Dunwoody Idol music competition happening on Saturday.   Finally, on Sunday there will be a number of Dance performances available for entertainment.

Parking for Lemonade Days is available at:

  • St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church (directly across from entrance)
  • Kingswood United Methodist Church
  • St. Barnabas Church
  • Peachtree Middle School (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only)
  • Back of Brook Run Park - new back entrance available on Barclay next to Fire Station.

Some Parking Areas Are Paid Parking

Please be conscious of NO Parking signs during Sunday Church schedules and nearby neighborhoods.

Uber/Lyft/Parent Drop-off & Pick-up will be located in the 90 spot parking area in front of the small pavilion across from the Great Lawn. Look for the sign.

Brook Run Dog Park: If you’re planning on using the Dog Park at Brook Run, we won’t get in your way at all. Just please use the Peeler Road entrance to the Park, and a friendly volunteer will point you in the right direction from there.  SORRY, NO PETS ALLOWED in the Festival Area.

I will be at the festival the first couple of days so if you see me at the event, please pull me aside to introduce yourself as I would love to chat to hear what is on your mind.  Thanks    John Heneghan

Christmas for KidsDunwoody Police Department accepting donations for 'Christmas for Kids'

The Dunwoody Police Department Christmas for Kids (CFK) program began in 2009 with the goal of bringing the community together to collect new and unwrapped toys for under-privileged children between the ages of newborn to 15 years old.
The toy drive kicks-off Sunday, November 19th at Light Up Dunwoody and runs through Thursday, December 7th. New, unwrapped toys and gifts can be dropped off 24/7 during this time at Dunwoody Police Headquarters (41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 100, Dunwoody) and The Package Good (5517 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody.) Community clubs, groups, businesses and subdivisions are also welcome to coordinate their own CFK toy drives. Please contact Lieutenant Fidel Espinoza at Fidel.Espinoza@dunwoodyga.gov if you need more information or assistance transporting your collected toys to a drop off location. Once enough toys are collected, officers work together with I Care Atlanta, Inc. and several other community groups to hold a Christmas celebration for special guests and their families.
The CFK celebration is open to all local children who reside in the Dunwoody, Doraville and Chamblee area who are between the ages of newborn and 15 years old along with their parents or guardians. Registration is open from November 20th - December 7th.  Proof of residency is required. Please contact Ana Varela of I Care Atlanta, Inc. at 678.615.3341 or ana@icareatlanta.org for information about eligibility or the registration process.

Dunwoody's Lemonade Days schedule for Saurday is packed with live entertainment & childrens activities.

I've visited Dunwoody's Lemonade Days for years and the layout is always being modified or tweaked, but this year I think it is a winner.  The main music stage is now in the center of the park in the big open field vs hidden in a corner as in the past and the other great change to me is the dedicated small child ride area.  This protected children's area is a little off the beaten path but allows a dedicated area for just little people to be with their parents with no other crowds or teenagers walking through to get to the bigger amusement rides.

680 the Fan will be hosting the G-Day televised Georgia Football Game on big screens, the Petting Zoo finally opens for the little ones, some brave souls (like Scott Bennett, Steve Fortenberry & Coach Mike Nash) will be in the dunk tank starting about 2 pm (I go in on Sunday @ 2:30), there will be shopping activities for Mom and everybody loves to see classic cars.   The Dunwoody High School Football team will out in force assisting with various items, working the dunk tank and selling Wildcat discount cards; so if a young man approaches you to buy a card, please think about supporting the Dunwoody Wildcats and the outstanding work of Coach Mike Nash.

Saturday's music line up looks to be incredible, packed with local talent with bands like Array, the Dunwoody Idol competition and then the headliners of Beauregard & John King.  I have posted a few videos down below so come out and join the fun.

Dunwoody Lemonade Days Festival is now in full swing - electronic coupon accepted.

I attended the Wednesday night opening and note a few positive changes.  The coupon above does not need to be printed, a flash of the coupon on your phone works too.  The music stage is front and center in the main lawn near the pavilion therefore music will be more prominent.  The rides are more spread out with dedicated areas (based on the ride) for teenagers / adults and separate areas for little kids.   Beer & wine are now added to the vendors list therefore I believe there will be a group of Peachtree Middle School parents who will be visiting this area in order to be close enough to dole out money to their children yet be far enough away to not bee seen.   If you want to get maximum rides in for the price of your wristband, I highly recommend attending Thursday as the lines get long over the weekend.

Enjoy

Dunwoody Lemonade Days Festival Coupon 2015 - please come out Rain or Shine !!

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7726/17104524041_57a2a82ebb_o.jpg

Lemonade Days will happen, rain or shine!

Rides will not be halted unless there are thunderstorms or downpours (neither of which are in the weather forecast). Food vendors and live music will still be there, as will art vendors. What WILL change – completely – is the layout. Organizers spent all day Sunday, moving the entire event to the top part of the park (1st time ever), due to the weather forecast, to keep the rides on asphalt. Food vendors will be where Food Truck Thursdays is normally held, and rides will be on asphalt behind the skate park and up front to the left, as you enter the park from North Peachtree. Art vendors will be along the main road. People can park in the surrounding church lots (note signs that specify Sunday parking start time, depending on when their services end), PCMS, or enter the park at the Peeler Rd entrance and park anywhere down to the right, heading towards the dog park.

We’ll have golf carts to bring people up to the front (instead of from N Peachtree down to the bottom of the hill, as we usually do). Lemonade Days is the biggest fundraiser for the Dunwoody Preservation Trust. We have great plans for the funds raised at this event, so we are working super hard to make the adjustments needed, so that people will still be able to come participate, have a blast and support us – they’ll still have a great time!     Don’t forget your unlimited ride coupon!

Dunwoody’s Lemonade Days showcases local music
As things begin to thaw out all over the US of A festivals emerge from their slumber setting up in towns everywhere focusing on communities, art, food, music or a little bit of everything. One such festival in Georgia is Dunwoody’s Lemonade Days.

In its 16th year the festival is 5 days of fun with something for everyone, including music. Throwing support towards local music Lemonade Days is one of the many events in Georgia that showcases musicians from Atlanta and the surrounding areas. Music teacher Mark Gallegos’ love of local music is one of the main forces behind the stage at Lemonade Days as a mix of veterans and new comers share the stage. To some this is old hat to others it is their first foray into live music. Either way they get to play their music for fans and new listeners alike. With a bit of music being offered on multiple days, Saturday will be the main course with a full day scheduled.

Headlining Saturday night is Atlanta’s Crane. Fronted by Anthony Crane the band delivers music that pulls from rock, blues, soul, funk, r&b and a few other genres. With a couple of EP’s under their belt the band’s music offers something for everyone. The songs make you feel good when you listen to them and when Crane plays them live they sound even better. Antony’s soulful voice leads the way as it rests upon the smooth rhythms and provided by the band. A good time will be had by all when Crane takes the stage and closes out Saturday’s festivities.

Cute Boots take the stage bringing a wealth of piano driven pop music along with them. Don’t expect them to be a Joel or Elton knockoff because they are not. Cute Boots gives listeners songs built around catchy lyrics, vocal harmonies and upbeat melodies that are held together by unobtrusive rhythms. They separate themselves from other piano laden music with the addition of Charlie Mill’s guitar playing. Their live shows are high energy as the band’s joy of playing music is projected onto the crowd as they roll through songs that are destined to become sing-a-longs.

Another band of note is Array. The young band has melded a raw rock sound with a classic new wave vibe. When you listen to the band’s debut record WOW you can tell that music from the 80’s & 90’s play a big influence. Array creates a bold sound around jagged guitars and rapid rhythms that remind me a lot of the pop infused rock of Material Issue or the Whigs. It warms the cockles of the heart to hear a young band embracing power pop/rock instead of the overproduced computer generated schlock many of today’s youngsters mindlessly follow. Array’s music should translate well live so expect a good set from them.

Offering up a mix of covers and original tunes will be No Komment. The band has been making a name with prominent showings in multiple band competitions as well as playing in many of Atlanta’s more popular venues. With live shows at the Loft, Smith’s Lode Bar and North side Tavern under their belts the stage at Lemonade Days should be a piece of cake.

In addition to these four bands look for a plethora of other local acts to take the stage. Go check out the full list of musicians, times and days at the Lemonade Days music website HERE.

Gallegos will also be releasing a compilation CD this weekend at Lemonade Days. Teaming with dunwodymusic.net and Jangly Records a group of local and regional musicians has been assembled with each supplying a song for the charity album. Being For The Benefit of Crawford Long is a 12 song album put together to help raise funds for the Crawford Long Middle School Music Program. Many of the artists performing this week are on the CD. You will be able to get copies of the benefit CD at Lemonade Days.

If you need something to do this week then head outside the perimeter to Dunwoody for Lemonade Days and check out a talented collection of local musicians. Spend the day taking in live music and throwing some support towards local music. Don’t forget to grab a CD and help keep music alive in school.

DeKalb's Lee May comes to Dunwoody and a bunch of other Dunwoody tidbits.

I have attended the annual Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) in the past at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta and the ceremony is quite moving.  This year the ceremony is Sunday April 12, 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The intersection of Spalding Drive and Mount Vernon Road will close for road construction starting Monday, April 13, according to the city of Sandy Springs. Please use Dunwoody Club as a Detour.

Monday night is a Dunwoody City Council Meeting - I am excited about approving the next segment of the Brook Run Trail as well as installing another park.

Lemonade Days starts Wednesday April 15th and runs through the weekend.  I will probably be there every day of the event but if you have children who want to ride the rides; may I suggest that Wednesday & Thursday will be the easiest and most economical option if you can swing it.   Lines are short or non-existent compared to Fri / Sat / Sun.  Here is the $5 off coupon - in fact three

The hours will be from 9:00 AM to 5:00PM. The public is invited and there is no fee.

Tuesday Night Kids Swim Season is soon upon us and Rick Callahan is prognosticating once again as to who is going to beat whom.  The full schedule is here.   If you do not belong to a local swim tennis association but have a child who would like to swim on a swim team, please reach out to Dunwoody North as we welcome everybody!  If you live in the area and want to join what I consider the best swim tennis club in Dunwoody where my bride is the social director and I can be found playing water volleyball on weekends; please check us out.

Kudos to Dunwoody Crime Analyst Amanda Head - the behind the scenes numbers cruncher works to keep us all safe.   I bet many readers could guess where this story happened?

Dunwoody explores Tree Canopy Obstacle Course, requests feedback on Spalding, proposed Sr. Living on Old Spring House, new Petco, rezonings and hotels, wild ride and food truck begins.

Would you like to hang out at Brook Run Park a little more this summer?   The City of Dunwoody is exploring options and looking for proposals for a possible Tree Canopy Obstacle Course at Brook Run Park.  No other details except what is on city site.  Thoughts?

I am receiving comments via email on the various intersection proposals for the Chamblee Dunwoody / Spalding Drive intersection.  A meeting with formal presentation took place on Feb 25th and the city staff is still accepting formal comments on which proposal you prefer.  Also take a look at the City of Dunwoody's YouTube page to see four videos of traffic scenarios for the intersection including the one way proposal.

Tuesday the Dunwoody Planning Commission reviews a rezoning on Old Spring House Lane to change land zoned for offices to 120 unit residential complex for Senior Living.

At the Wednesday meeting of the Village Design Review Advisory Committee they are discussing a new sign to be installed in the Dunwoody Hall (Publix's) Shopping Center on Chamblee Dunwoody for what appears to be a new pet store concept by Petco called; "Unleashed for dogs and cats."

At the Thursday morning Sustainability Committee they are discussing a city sustainability plan and possible designated parking for electric vehicles.

At the Thursday evening Community Council meeting they are discussing two possible property rezonings.  The first asks to rezone a piece of property on Crown Point Parkway from a proposed 120 room hotel to instead allow a self storage building in its place.  The second asks to rezone a property on Ashford Dunwoody Road where 257 multifamily residential units are currently allowed and instead allow a 128 room hotel and commercial space for retail or restaurant.

51 days until Dunwoody Lemonade Days - sponsors needed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M92-Yx8MVSk

On April 23-27, 2014 Dunwoody Preservation Trust (DPT) will host Lemonade Days, its annual fund raising event. Lemonade Days 2014 will again feature the same format that we have enjoyed for the past few years. This year we plan to continue our extended carnival hours, add rides, diversify more broadly the food choices and add new activities. This new schedule has been developed based on community feedback to allow families more flexibility in planning their participation.

We expect to have outdoor activities including amusement park rides, games, food vending and other individual and family activities Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 10:00 PM, Friday from 4 to 11 PM, Saturday from 10 AM to 11 PM and Sunday from 12 to 6:00 PM. Additionally there will be a face painting booth and a petting zoo on both Saturday and Sunday.

The Dunwoody Preservation Trust’s corporate partnership sponsorships create programs with local Dunwoody/North Atlanta impact. We work with each partner to design an integrated marketing strategy that addresses their objectives by providing them many benefits, including positive public relations and increased goodwill, brand loyalty, and a company investment in the preservation of our history and heritage.

Lemonade Days is one of the City of Dunwoody's highest visibility events and we, as always, are planning to ensure that our Sponsors have maximum exposure by using a variety of promotional vehicles before, during and after the weekend. Enclosed is information on sponsorship options and benefits, a summary agenda of the weekend and an update of what Dunwoody Preservation Trust has accomplished on behalf of preserving our history. Also enclosed is insight on how the funds raised through this year’s event will be utilized.

For Weather Updates, Volunteer Opportunities and Insights into this year's Festival, please follow us on Twitter @Lemonadedays or on Facebook.
