Dragoncon Parade is this Saturday 10 am - this is a don't miss event for Children of All Ages!

For many years I have escorted my sons and their friends downtown on Marta to watch the Dragon*Con Parade. If you are not aware of Dragon*Con it is the largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the US.   In the past, 65,000 people were expected to attend - this year I have no clue but it will be big.

Here is a link to some video I shot of the parade back in 2009 which will only give you a small taste of what we have experienced. Trust me that this is quite an experience and my kids would enjoy it every year.

Saturday, September 3rd @ 10 am
Peachtree Rd downtown
directly above the Peachtree Center Marta Station

The AJC wrote a nice generic article giving tips on how to attend, but as a parade regular I am about to share my closely held secret location and directions of attending the Dragoncon Parade in style...

Take Marta to Peachtree Center, exit at the south side of the station (towards the back of the train) and then once through the fare gates head to the right towards escalators heading towards the Peachtree Center Food Court.  At this point you can go directly up to Peachtree Rd and it will be mobbed with people (whereby if you get good seats you'll have a good time) - if this is your plan, get there early.  Instead of fighting the crowds, I follow a different path to a parade location I consider a hidden gem. Let me share.

Once you come up the escalators from Marta, don't go to the street level, instead walk into and though the food court walking past Farmers Basket, Caribou Coffee and then finally straight past Aviva by Kameel.    Note there are public bathrooms across from Aviva on your right and then there is a set of steps past Aviva to the left that will take you down to the corner of Peachtree Center and Harris (now called John Portman).

Once you have made it down to Peachtree Center street, I recommend turning right and setting up your chairs in the driveway to the building and under the walkway overhead as the driveway will be closed once the parade starts and the walkway provides a little cover if it is sunny or drizzling.  This location is the end of the parade route and the first walkers should be showing up about 10:30 but I recommend getting there by 9:30 or 10 at the latest to set up your chairs as the crowds on Peachtree Road will be heavy and they may spill over to this hidden location a half block away.

This location has easy access to both public bathrooms and decent coffee!  After the parade, the food court will be packed and the kids may be hungry therefore instead of Chick-fil-A; I highly recommend the chicken fingers at Farmers Basket (near Marta entrance) and top it off with a little mac & cheese as both are little kids favorites.  The line there will be almost non-existent compared to Chick-fil-A and your kids will be eating 3 minutes later.  As far as a place to have the kids eat, take your food upstairs and outside near CVS as there are tables there reserved for outdoor dining of the restaurants below. After a quick meal, back on the train as I believe there may be some football to watch.

Honestly this is a fun family excursion, especially for the kids but even my wife enjoyed it.

I highly recommend this event, it an Atlanta right of passage for every little kid to see their favorite super hero up close and personal.

Dunwoody Lemonade Days Festival Coupon 2015 - please come out Rain or Shine !!

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7726/17104524041_57a2a82ebb_o.jpg

Lemonade Days will happen, rain or shine!

Rides will not be halted unless there are thunderstorms or downpours (neither of which are in the weather forecast). Food vendors and live music will still be there, as will art vendors. What WILL change – completely – is the layout. Organizers spent all day Sunday, moving the entire event to the top part of the park (1st time ever), due to the weather forecast, to keep the rides on asphalt. Food vendors will be where Food Truck Thursdays is normally held, and rides will be on asphalt behind the skate park and up front to the left, as you enter the park from North Peachtree. Art vendors will be along the main road. People can park in the surrounding church lots (note signs that specify Sunday parking start time, depending on when their services end), PCMS, or enter the park at the Peeler Rd entrance and park anywhere down to the right, heading towards the dog park.

We’ll have golf carts to bring people up to the front (instead of from N Peachtree down to the bottom of the hill, as we usually do). Lemonade Days is the biggest fundraiser for the Dunwoody Preservation Trust. We have great plans for the funds raised at this event, so we are working super hard to make the adjustments needed, so that people will still be able to come participate, have a blast and support us – they’ll still have a great time!     Don’t forget your unlimited ride coupon!

Free Rita's Italian Ice on Friday for the First Day of Spring

My good friends and Dunwoody residents Jeff & Carrie Budd operate the Rita's Italian Ice shop on Ashford Dunwoody across the street from Blackburn Park.  Carrie is a regular participant in numerous community & charity events and on Friday they are offering a free ice to all who are interested.  I stop by on a regular basis with my boys, especially after a well played baseball game.

If you have never been, I highly suggest it.

Dunwoody Founders Park Bench, Brook Run walking trail thru the deep woods to Nancy Creek and Treetop Quest zip lines are under construction.

Children's Playground Entrance - Founders of Dunwoody Bench

In Dunwoody if elected officials want their name on something they do it the "old fashioned way" they pay for it themselves out of their own pockets.  (I wouldn't want it any other way!)

A few weeks ago I lead a group of long time Dunwoody citizens to the most remote, deepest jungles of Dunwoody, along a relatively easy walking trail to view the serine waters of Nancy Creek rolling by.   Now that the Dunwoody Trailway loop is complete and shown on Google Maps, please allow me to share with you a quiet place to experience nature.  At the very back of the park there is a bridge on the trailway crossing a small creek and you will notice a small walking trail at the North West corner of the bridge heading into the woods.  Nature lovers - I suggest you follow it, you can thank me later.

Finally, during my walk through Brook Run Park, I discovered a team of men who were about to start putting these Lincoln Log looking items to good use a 100 feet in the air as the Brook Run Tree Top Quest Zip Line Course started construction today.   They should be finished by mid-March and if you want a sneak peek of what will be installed, check out this drawing and map that the construction crew was using.   Prices are still steep

Dads, please spend a couple of quality hours with your children in Brook Run Park on Oct 25th doing the Checklist Challenge.

Last year I participated in the Dads' Bucket List - Checklist Challenge event in Canton, GA and was so impressed with the event that I was able to convince the organizers (most of whom are Dunwoody Dads) that Brook Run Park would be a better venue to repeat the event.

The challenge will take about two hours to complete and the hours of operation are from 10 am until 6 pm therefore after other family scheduled activities, there is still a little time to play at the park with your kids, doing something that I bet you haven't done before.

Please join me and my family, you will not be disappointed!  Volunteers, Sponsors and participants are needed.

Below is a short video of Dunwoody resident Matt Boettcher explaining to the Dunwoody City Council what this event is all about.

Zach Holcomb and his son Alex participate in a challenge.

Dunwoody Reporter

Nothing says quality time quite like competition.

The second Checklist Challenge hosted by Dad’s Bucket List takes place Oct. 25 as an obstacle course meets “The Amazing Race” in Dunwoody’s Brook Run Park.

Councilman John Heneghan took part in the first Checklist Challenge on March 1 and he encouraged Matt Boettcher, founder of Dad’s Bucket List, to host a second Checklist Challenge in Dunwoody.

“He put the bug in our ear to have the second one in Brook Run Park,” Boettcher said.

Other dads encouraged the members of Dad’s Bucket List, a Dunwoody-based group of fathers who take part in outings with their children, to repeat the challenge event. A few days after the first Checklist Challenge, Boettcher said he received a couple of unsolicited text messages from people who wanted to share what obstacles their kids like the most. “That somebody was interested enough to share feedback, encouraged us in continuing,” Boettcher said.

Boettcher said he ran into a dad about six weeks after the first Checklist Challenge who loved the event and said it wasn’t the kind of thing he usually would have done with his kids. The dad told Boettcher he usually sticks to the “old standbys” of movies and passive events, but the opportunity to be active with his child impressed him.

“Testimonials like that gave us the energy to build,” Boettcher said.

Boettcher said the Checklist Challenge has the potential to become an annual event in Dunwoody, and possibly take place in other cities too.

“We have other ideas on what Dad’s Bucket List can be doing,” he said. “One of the things we’ve always been interested in is unique experiences.”

This time, the Checklist Challenge will be more of a race, where dad-and-child teams can compare times against other teams.

The first Checklist Challenge was about obstacles, Boettcher said, and if you did the obstacles, you got a chip. Those accumulated chips were checked off on the leader board.

“Now we’re doing challenges as well as obstacles, so dads and kids will team up to win challenges against other teams,” Boettcher said, noting it will be more like “The Amazing Race.”

Brook Run Park will have about 15 obstacles, and dads can arrive with their child or children any time between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Participating costs $15 plus a $1.82 fee per participant through Oct. 15, then $25 plus the $2.37 fee after that.

Teams will receive a time stamp when they check in, and while there isn’t a time limit, participants can expect to spend about two hours challenging themselves.

Each station takes about five to 10 minutes, Boettcher said, adding that some obstacles are mind puzzles and some require strength. A minimum of 15 obstacle stations will be available, but teams don’t have to stop at every station.

“This is an opportunity to get out there and see what you and your kids can accomplish as a team,” Boettcher said.

The Oct. 25 Checklist Challenge takes place between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Participants should plan to spend about two hours in the park, Boettcher said. “Disconnect from the normal activity stuff, disconnect from your work life and do something unique and fun with your kids,” Boettcher said.

The crafting of the experience is the best part for Boettcher and his two sons, ages 8 and 6.

“My kids are chief product testers,” Boettcher said. During the first challenge, “we didn’t get a chance to participate, but I hope to rectify this on this time around.”

The group of dads keeping Dad’s Bucket List going, Beottcher said, wants to create activities to break out of the routine and create lasting memories with their kids.

“It’s not a club with members, but 20 to 30 dads have taken part in multiple outings with us, and that continues to grow,” Boettcher said.

He said the events like Checklist Challenge are designed by dads, for dads and their kids.

“Everything is built by us, so it has that look of ‘something my dad did with his hands,’” Boettcher said, noting the obstacles are thoughtfully put together and tested. “We figured out a fun way to put together an event, and it’s not corporate. No bounce houses.”

Do not miss event - Dads' Bucket List "Checklist Challenge" at Brook Run Park in Dunwoody on Sat Oct 25th !

What's On Tap for Oct. 25th

We're approaching event day and we wanted to communicate some of the latest news with you.

Teamwork: It's going to be your key to success this time around. One of the new wrinkles for this event will be that several obstacles will have an option to compete against other teams.  Consider it an opportunity to show that brains can outwit brawn or perhaps show how your team's brawn is able to outlast another's beauty.  Got some co-workers, neighbors or friends that you'd like to see your team match up against?

Obstacles: We're always looking to mix things up so get ready to see several new obstacles (and of course, a return of some of our most popular ones).

Buffs and Waffles!:  We're excited to announce that every attendee will receive his/her own custom Dads' Bucket List buff just like they wear on Survivor. We're also partnering with our friends at Waffle House to provide waffles until they run out.

Registration: It's time to stop dipping that toe in the water and commit to signing up for our Oct. 25 "Checklist Challenge" in Dunwoody (Brook Run Park), click here to register today.

Charity - This event supports Bert's Big Adventure in making a difference in the lives of children with chronic and terminal illnesses.
We hope you'll join us in October, and please help us by spreading the word to your friends and colleagues.

Go. See. Be. Do.

City of Dunwoody and B98.5 FM present the movie Frozen on Saturday Night at Brook Run Park

Saturday, June 28, 2014

Grab a blanket, some chairs, family and friends and join us for an evening of family fun! Festivities begin at 6 p.m. and the movie begins at sunset. Look for us on the play lawn located near the park's main entrance, next to the playground. We look forward to seeing you there!

The evening features Frozen (PG), a Disney animated adventure with fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) who sets off on an epic journey—teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven—to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter...(for those few that don't know).

In case there are Fathers of little girls who do not know the words to the Academy Award Winning Best Movie Song "Let it Go" - I thought I would copy the link to the sing along version which has had 114 million views.  Who knows maybe the entire park will break out in song?   I wouldn't know, I have boys and we can't carry a tune.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0MK7qz13bU

Even though my boys don't know the song above by heart, I can tell you that my lovely bride as the only lady in the home, does sing the parody shown below on a regular basis. (Love you Kristin!)
