Community Meeting on Dunwoody Police - Tonight 6 pm at North Shallowford Annex, 2nd Floor (Shallowford & Peachford). Link to Polar Plunge Police Donation Page.

I am a fan and proud supporter of the Dunwoody Police Department and more specifically, a supporter of the Officers who do the daunting job of protecting our community.  The job is extremely stressful and hard on family life whereby the men and women who provide this service not only see but routinely handle the worst aspects of everyday life.

As a City Councilman, I am not allowed to blindly be just a fan of our Police Department, but I sometimes need to question, discuss, suggest and raise topics behind closed doors in order to be assured that our Department is always improving, adopting best practices, saving lives, protecting property and being ready to jump into action for the next bad day, be that a shooting at the mall, an incident at a school or an interaction between our Department and a resident.  We are selective as to the hiring of our officers and once on the force they are rigorously trained on both hard and soft skills of dealing with all aspects of our community, many of whom have special needs.  After that training, our officers are seen in the community, personally interacting with residents and humanizing the job of police officer as a trusted member of the community, because that is what they are.

As a City Councilman, I review public arrest data, talk to residents, read the news and all aspects of social media; I meet with Police Management along with the City Manager to discuss issues, trends and to keep informed, I talk one on one with police officers as well as my fellow Council-members.  I as a member of Council, do my due diligence to ensure our Department is fulfilling the mission of providing professional law enforcement services to those within our borders and doing so with a goal of continuous improvement; and to that end, I can attest that we have that professionalism here in the City of Dunwoody.

I also believe that the main characteristics of good police officers are being physically fit, having integrity, empathy, team orientation, adaptability, even-tempered, having common sense, a desire to learn and having good communication skills.  If you look at the list above, being perfect is not listed as it is a quality as that is unattainable but striving for excellence for yourself and those around you, training to proficiency or certification while as a Department being self-reflective as to where we are, where we need to improve, all the while attempting to implement best industry practices.  That is the goal and we are meeting those objectives.  I am proud of our Department.

The Dunwoody City Council is now investing in a study of self-reflection of the Dunwoody Police Department and we need your help to provide us feedback.  Please attend tonight's meeting to give personal feedback or suggestions on the Department or I also see that there is a link available to  provide comments / questions.  In order to prepare for tonights meeting I would suggest you (everyone) review the Police Website and maybe a more informative read from an overview perspective is to read the 2021 Annual Report of the Dunwoody Police Department.

If you are happy with the actions of the police department and trust the leadership to continue providing the oversight appropriate for efficiency & effectiveness, therefore seeing no reason to comment.... here is something for you.  Today is also the annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Georgia, where members of the Dunwoody Police Department will once again be wearing funny-looking swim suits to take an ice bath to raise funds for an important cause.  If you would like to make a donation to support the Departments efforts, here is the link to do so.

Below is the meeting information and below that I have copied the mission and vision statements of the Department.

The City of Dunwoody (City) is working with BerryDunn, a national consulting firm, to conduct a comprehensive operational assessment of the Dunwoody Police Department. This independent assessment requires a thorough review of information from both internal and external sources.

The City is seeking community perspectives on how the Dunwoody Police Department performs its public safety function in serving Dunwoody residents and visitors. In addition, like many other areas of the country, the City is interested in evaluating the traditional police call for service (CFS) model. It is possible, and perhaps likely, that certain CFS might be better addressed through non-traditional methods.

The City, Dunwoody Police Department and BerryDunn are hosting a special community meeting to discuss these topics, and to explore thoughts and ideas from the community. Please join us for this meeting on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dunwoody North Shallowford Annex, located at 4470 N. Shallowford Road, Dunwoody, GA 30338 (upstairs).

We welcome positive comments, as well as constructive feedback and suggestions for improving the department so it can meet the needs of the community.

Founded on April 1, 2009

Never pass a children's lemonade stand without stopping, because it is never about the Lemonade! and Dunwoody High School Academy of Finance - Steve Fortenberry

Sunday afternoon I was rolling through the Village when I noticed several tables surrounded by a small crowd outside Bar(n) and saw there was a Lemonade Stand fundraiser taking place.  As usual for lemonade stands, I stopped.

Typically for me if I see a neighborhood lemonade stand with little kids, I stop and it isn't for the beverage.  I stop to interact with the young proprietors, (I wink and nod at the parents hoovering behind letting them know the children are doing great) then I lightly assess the children's sales skills by interacting and asking easy questions, then I inquire on where the money is going, is it for a charity, are you saving for college?  They then deal with cash and start making change, if they ask if I would like to donate the change to the cause, I sometimes do.  The talented one's would also be offering me a cookie, as on this stop if they are selling, I am buying.  I let them know that the lemonade is always the best I've ever had, I thank the sellers and give kudos to the parents for raising young entrepreneurs.

Today the young entrepreneurs were a few Dunwoody High School Seniors embarking into the second phase of the Dunwoody High School Academy of Finance who under the tutelage of Mr. Steve Fortenberry (and others) were asked to set up Lemonade Stands in the community.  Today wasn't about the lemonade, it was the interaction where it enabled me to learn the hopes & dreams of high school seniors and through those interactions I learned of their school plans, their business ideas that each of them were about to embark upon for the class, be it selling t-shirts, or hosting basketball tournaments.

If you ever have the opportunity to stop at a lemonade stand, I hope you do and if you are able to support the students in the Dunwoody High School of Finance and take advantage of their goods &and services, I hope you can do that too.

Instead of saying kudos to the parents, I offer a special thank you to Mr. Steve Fortenberry who for the last 23 years has been instrumental in raising the next generation of Dunwoody entrepreneurs!  Kudos fine sir!

Below is a link I previously publicized to an article published in 1995 in the Atlanta Business Chronicle written by Mr. Fortenberry exploring the class and its goals.  I included a snip it of the article below the link to give you some flavor but the whole article is worthwhile.

"Dunwoody High School Academy of Finance preparing future business leaders"

One of the most important missions that a high school has is to properly prepare our students for the ever increasingly competitive global workforce.

The Dunwoody High School Academy of Finance looks to fulfill this mission and graduate students who are focused and ready for the challenges that await them. The DHS Academy is a two year program (11th -12th grades) in which students are exposed to many facets of the business environment. It is likened to a “mini” MBA, as students take courses in corporate finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, personal finance, AP macroeconomics and international business. Further, the course is heavy in group projects, team competitions, and interaction with many local business leaders that sharpen the students networking skills. It is a program that provides students with unique experiences and a real world curriculum that allows them to begin to focus in on their potential career path.

The Academy is in its 16th 23rd year at Dunwoody. Teaching is a second career for me, having left the business world after 10 years to pursue my passion of teaching. I returned to my alma mater to establish the Academy of Finance after the parent organization, the National Academy Foundation, selected Dunwoody High School to have an Academy. It started with a small group of students in 1999, and has now grown to an Academy that has 95 juniors and 90 seniors.

Hey Dunwoody, Tonight is the last opportunity to attend All Saints Annual Lenten Fish Fry - 2443 Mount Vernon Road Dunwoody, GA 30338

This will probably be one of the busiest restaurants in Dunwoody this Friday Night!

My family attends All Saint's Catholic Church and I'm a member of the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal service organization dedicated to providing charitable services.  The Knights biggest fundraising event is our “WORLD FAMOUS” FISH FRY which has returned in force this year but I'm here to tell you that Tonight is the last opportunity to join in the festivities.

The Knights have been hosting this event for 20 years and I can tell you the food is cooked with loving care by professional chefs. The Baked Salmon, Fried Shrimp and the Clam Chowder are my personal favorites! Fried Cod, Mac-N-Cheese, and the Hush-Puppies are my boys favorites.  Our to-go orders are very efficient and if you are dining in you may recognize a few people working the main bar and many of our deserts are made fresh therefore some people hit that immediately upon entry to secure their favorites.

Volunteers needed saturday morning to assist with childhood cancer prevention project, Dunwoody Village will be Rocking Saturday Night and Sunday is the Annual DHA Meeting

There are many worthwhile charitable causes in which to support and childhood cancer research is one that is close to my heart. My friends and Dunwoody residents Donal & Karen Flemming are the main facilitators of St. Baldrick's in Atlanta having hosted numerous events, including the St. Baldrick's Float in the St. Patrick's Day Parade every year. Today, Saturday morning the Flemming's could use your assistance with rolling t-shirts to be thrown from the float during the parade. I will be at All Saints Catholic Church, gym in the lower parking lot to assist and maybe I will see you there for a short shift between 8 and 1 pm.

Volunteer opportunity this morning -  St Baldrick’s T-shirt repacking.

As some of my long time blog readers may remember I have shaved my head for St. Baldrick's a number of times, each time with one of my boys and lately my youngest who is now 16 is asking to join me to shave my head once again because he too wants to participate.

I hate fundraising and my bride might not like the idea (I think she used the words Uncle Fester as a term of endearment?), but it might happen again. Until then I help with t-shirts.

Below is documentation of a prior shave if you wanted proof & FYI that little boy sitting next to me is now 6 foot 4, 22 years old and is about to graduate from college.

Bald is beautiful on St. Baldrick's day

Dunwoody Village will be Rocking Saturday Night as the Dunwoody Tavern celebrates 25 years

Starting at 8 pm there will be a live band (Family Truckster from Dunwoody) playing, a few funds will be collected for Camp Twin Lakes and neighbors will be talking to neighbors they haven't seen in several years. Come join us.

The Dunwoody Homeowners Association is holding its annual meeting at 2pm, Sunday, February 27.  The meeting will take place at the City of Dunwoody annex at 4470 N. Shallowford Rd.   Maybe I'll see you there and I think it will also be available streamed on Facebook too.

Part of the DHA meeting will be a review of the proposed expansion of the Spruill Center Art Building to add more class rooms and art classes to the community.  Here is the request from Spruill to the City Council which includes the full plans of the expansion.

On Monday the Dunwoody City Council will be finalizing a construction contract for the new park on Perimeter Center East located within close walking distance of 1,000's of apartments that have been undeserved of close recreational amenities.  The new park will have a playground, open green space, the city's first splash pad and a walking trail through the woods.  I will post the full plans tomorrow when I post the full Monday night Council agenda.

Dunwoody Family with children in our schools, needs financial assistance for forced move. Can you assist Giving Grace to raise the funds? @ahaconnection @SVdPGeorgia @ICareAtlanta @CACgeorgia

Friends,

Today people are struggling all around us but today I was notified of a family who attends Dunwoody Schools who could using a helping hand and I wanted to make you aware of the situation in case you have the ability to assist in lifting this family up.  I was notified by my friend and Dunwoody resident Christy Carr Betz who assists with an organization called Remerge and private Facebook Group called Giving Grace that assists with short term financial assistance to help those get over the hump to pay a bill or remain in their homes.  You may have read about Christy on the Aha Connection.  Today was a notice about a Dunwoody Family and I am now fully aware of circumstances and legitimacy of the ask, therefore I am sharing the story in case you want to assist.

We have a local family that needs our help. They are a family that has lives in Dunwoody for 18 years in the same apartment. They have children that attend Dunwoody schools. They are being forced out of their home due to the extreme increase in rent. They have to be out by this Saturday. They have found a place to rent this past week but may not be able to move because they need one months rent along with a months rent deposit. The total for rent and deposit $3600. They currently have $1800 towards this amount. So they need help with an additional $1800 in order to move on Saturday.

If anyone can help with this need, please put in Dunwoody in the memo. Tax-deductible donations can be made using the link below.

Can you assist? Dunwoody charity is hosting a Gift Card Drive for Arrive Apartment Complex Impacted Residents. @ajc @DunwoodyCrier @Reporter_News

Tuesday Night - Gift Card drive for St. Malachi's to distribute to the affected families.

Dunwoody friends, as many of you might have heard via social media, on the news or perhaps you heard or felt the explosion, the Arrive Apartment Complex had a explosion today. Multiple units have been destroyed and neighboring buildings may have also been damaged.

At this point it looks like the residents impacted will be safely housed tonight, but the loss of their personal items is great. In order to address the immediate financial need to help support those affected in purchasing items to get through the short term recovery, we are holding a gift card drive.

Tuesday during our normal Malachi's Storehouse donation drop off, we will also be collecting gift cards to distribute to the affected families. We will be working with the apartment complex manager to distribute the gift cards to these families. Please see the information below for more details and thank you in advance for your caring and generosity. Dunwoody never ceases to amaze me in its support of each other - our hearts are full.

When: Tuesday, September 14 from 4-6pm
Where: Malachi's Storehouse at St. Patrick's Church (Across from the main entrance to Brook Run Park on North Peachtree)
What: Gift Cards in any amount: Target, Walmart, Visa, Krogers

A second collection site is SOHO Office next to the Kroger on Dunwoody Club and they will be collecting Monday through Friday between 9AM-6PM.  The hope is to get the residents assistance ASAP, please try to donate by Tuesday night if you are able.

Sincerely yours,

Your Tuesday Malachi Volunteers

* We will not be collecting items for the residents. Due to the ranges of ages and needs, we understand that the most impactful help these residents can receive is in the form of gift cards.

Help Needed for Paralyzed Vanderlyn Custodian Victor Shumate

A friend forwarded me the heartbreaking Facebook post about Mr. Vic Shumate, the Custodian at Vanderlyn Elementary School who is now in a very bad condition due to his battle with COVID which has left him paralyzed.  Below was the post that was shared on Facebood and after donating to the cause via the links in the middle of the post I reached out to the family discuss Vic's condition and receive a photo.  If you are able to give a donation, please do and please share to those who may assist.  John
___________________________

Many of you know Victor (Vic) Shumate as a dedicated, hardworking and caring person. He always made himself available to anyone who needed his help and he never met a stranger. Today, Victor needs us. 2020 was an overwhelming year for everyone! The “new normal” meant we lived our lives by missing family gatherings, altered work schedules and finding new ways to entertain our families. In November, the Shumates were hit with the one fear they had been protecting themselves against, COVID. Thanksgiving Day last year was spent waiting for their COVID results. Victor, his wife and daughter all tested positive for COVID the following day. Eventually, after four days in the hospital for Victoria who had breathing issues from COVID, everyone recovered and life returned to their new normal. However, in late January 2021, Victor began to feel coldness and numbness in his feet that began to travel up his legs. Preliminary doctor visits, led to appointments with a podiatrist and urologist. Meanwhile, his ability to walk was fading fast and he had to begin using a cane to walk.

On February 3, 2021, and after his 11th fall at home, Victor was hospitalized due to the numbing with minimal use of his legs. Many tests were run, biopsies conducted, blood drawn, and clinical trials evaluated to determine what was causing Victor to lose the ability to walk and the paralysis that began traveling up his body. He also lost the ability to use his hands and arms. Tests determined that Victor had inflammation around a part of his spine and he was diagnosed with COVID induced myelopathy, a nervous system disorder that attacked his spine. To address the inflammation, his doctors ordered several treatments. The treatments included high doses of steroids, that caused his blood sugar to spike so he had to begin taking insulin. Another treatment included seven rounds of plasmapheresis that entailed Victor having to lay in one spot for three hours at a time while his plasma was run through a cleaning process. The last treatment involved several rounds of a mild form of chemotherapy. None of these treatments were successful and three months later it’s still unknown why this sudden change has occurred in Victor’s health. The doctors called him a mystery and even sent his test results to the Mayo Clinic for answers. ALL TESTS CAME BACK NORMAL, yet he continues to be paralyzed in a quadriplegic state.

This traumatic event has impacted Victor and his family resulting in long term hospitalization (three months and counting) and time away from his family, friends and co-workers at Vanderlyn Elementary. He now depends on a team of medical professionals to provide medical care and basic everyday care like drinking a glass of water. Through it all, Victor has remained in good spirits with prayers and calls from his extended family, friends and co-workers. Our goal now is to do more by combining our work and faith in God on behalf of Victor.

In support of Vic, we are hitting the pavement by organizing a virtual VICtory Walk fundraiser. Family, friends and supporters are asked to get active by logging the steps/miles you walk, jog or run beginning May 16th through May 23rd. There are no set rules to determine what you give as every amount is deeply appreciated. We just ask that you track your steps/miles through your smart phone or pedometer. Giving Grace - something we can all do to assist others in need. Kudos to Dunwoody Resident, Christy Carr Betz

https://www.facebook.com/groups/753366974750959/
Please join Giving Grace as an opportunity to directly serve others in their time of need.

This morning a photo of my friend and neighbor Christy Betz jumped into my electronic news feed with an AJC article highlighting the charity she runs assisting those in need.

After a year of volunteering in Atlanta's Church on the Street, getting to know some of the homeless folks better, Betz realized that some of them were homeless because they could not afford to save for a deposit and first month’s rent while paying for hotels; and that the needs went beyond that. Many of the families she encounters just needed — indeed deserved — a little bit of grace to improve their situations.

On Facebook, she created a private group of mostly affluent residents who lived north of the city of Atlanta called Giving Grace.

With their help, she intended to quickly raise on a case-by-case basis enough funds to help meet the needs of metro Atlantans who were either homeless or on the verge of becoming homeless.

Christy's little Facebook fundraising page has 5,649 followers and as Christy is a Dunwoody mom, many of her helpers come from the Dunwoody and surrounding areas.

Everyone needs a little Grace, the bestowal of blessings, from time to time and when I am able to personally able assist; I too am blessed.

Please check out and assist the great work of Giving Grace.

Malachi's Storehouse Food Pantry at Dunwoody's St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is in need of donations.

Donations needed - food collection Tuesday 4 - 6 PM
MALACHI'S STOREHOUSE
4755 North Peachtree Rd,
Dunwoody, Georgia 30338

When you live a block or two away from Brook Run Park, you pass by St. Patrick's Episcopal Church regularly, and on Wednesday's you know that there is something special going on over there.  Malachi's Storehouse is the local food pantry that operates out of St. Patrick's, where they distribute food, dignity, and large heepings of love to anyone who comes through the door.

COVID-19 has caught most of us completely off guard. With the drastic change in the economy, there are so many people out of work, and with the children being home from school where many of the kids are regularly fed, the need for food donations has drastically risen.

Two weeks ago 150 families received assistance, last week, the number shot up to 250 families, and on Wednesday, the guess is that the need will even be higher.  Some Dunwoody families are going through rough times therefore they need a little assistance, and if you can, please do.

Your financial donation will go further than food donations, as they are able to purchase food from the Atlanta Community Food Bank for a much cheaper rate than you can purchase food at a grocery store or on-line. If you would like to make a financial contribution, you can donate via http://malachisstorehouse.org/donate/

If you have gone shopping lately and you would like to make food donation, there will be a team of people collecting food on Tuesday Afternoon from 4 - 6 pm.  You don't even need to get out of the car, just drive around to the South Side of the building a team of people will meet you there to assist.

Donation suggestions:
canned fruits / vegetables / beans
canned tuna/chicken
peanut butter/jelly
pasta
cereal / oatmeal / grits

We as a community are all in this together. Anything helps. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Wednesday evening I stopped by Porter Brew & Que located in a corner of the Shops of Dunwoody, in Dunwoody Village next door to the Dunwoody Tavern who was hosting an event to support the Dunwoody Police Foundation and I received a full tour of the brewery, the smoke house, and the kitchen.   The establishment is under the new management of Dunwoody resident Greg Gordon and besides great BBQ, 50 different types of bourbon, six different beers on tap at all times, the brewery is always trying new beer recipes including an experiment of hard seltzer.

Please stop by Porter's to buy a flight and support the Dunwoody Police Foundation.

Dunwoody's All Saints Annual Lenten Fish Fry serves up over 1,000 meals per night - Baked Salmon, Fried Shrimp and the Clam Chowder are my favorites!

The busiest restaurant in Dunwoody - over 1,000 meals served in just 3 hours

Fish Frys are back for 2020 Lent! Skip the cooking and come enjoy a delicious seafood meal with your family, friends and other Dunwoody residents.

My family attends All Saint's Catholic Church and I'm a member of the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal service organization dedicated to providing charitable services.  The Knights' biggest fundraising event is our “WORLD FAMOUS” FISH FRY, which started Wednesday and continues for the next six consecutive Friday nights with the last serving occurring on Friday, April 3rd.

As a member of the Knights, I can tell you that the article in the AJC is correct; the Friday night fish fry is very busy, the food is fresh, and the service with numerous volunteers is incredible.  At one point last year, we were serving a meal every 13 seconds, and all of the funds were pushed back into community charity work.

Cyclebar Dunwoody supports DHS Girls Soccer and so do I - ride with us Saturday Afternoon @DwoodSoccer @CB_Dunwoody @DunwoodyHS

As a Dunwoody City Councilman, I get invited to attend or participate in numerous fundraising events, and I attempt to support a wide range of charitable functions as my budget allows, usually dragging my wife or boys along where possible.

This week I was invited to support the Dunwoody High School Girls Soccer Team by joining in their Charity Spin Class being offered by Cylebar Dunwoody.   In case you are not aware, I am a huge fan, and regular rider of Cyclebar as the workouts are high energy, they are easy on my old football injury-ridden knees and the people there foster a true sense of community and comradery with all riders.  Looking at this evenings ride stats, I burned over 700 calories over 45 minutes, while holding an average heart rate 150 beats per minute and it looks I have now ridden 352 times over the last three years.  Long story short, I love the place and highly recommend it.

Cyclebar's Cylclegives program returns all activity fees back to the charity, and the Dunwoody Soccer Girls hope to fill the room with minimum donations of $25.00.   It appears that there are about 15 of the 50 bikes still available and if this type of charity event floats your boat, please join us on Saturday.

Click here - register for the Dunwoody Girls special spin class happening this Saturday at 1:45

PS - If you are just interested in just trying a normal Cyclebar class, I believe most first classes are free, so check out the website for new riders and maybe I will see you there Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. as I look to complete class 353.

Dunwoody community rallies to assist the family of 11 year old PCMS student - donations appreciated.

Gerardo Garcia was an amazing 11-year-old, who loved to play soccer with his friends in his neighborhood and at school. He was a very happy kid loved by everyone. Unfortunately, Gerardo committed suicide in his home where his brother found him. He’s touched everyone’s heart in some way in our neighborhood. We’re a family neighborhood where everyone knows everyone and Gerardo was very known and loved. My family and I are trying to do something more for the family that’ll help in these hard times. It's not easy to go through a loss, especially it being someone close. This family is going through enough as if with the loss of there son, brother and cousin. His brothers have it the hardest emotionally and mentally with this tragedy. All I want to ask from the public is for anything that could help this family with the funeral expenses. The Garcia family will forever be thankful for the help. My family and I as neighbors of the family were thanking you all. It’s tough times for the Garcia family. - Lizbeth Reyna
