City update by Dunwoody Mayor Denis Shortal - Food Truck Thursday's at Brook Run kick off tonight.

Greetings my fellow citizens … the following are some items of interest …

1. Food Truck Thursday … The first Food Truck Thursday of 2019 is tonight, May 2. This is a big one! We will be celebrating our 10th anniversary as a city. The times are 5 - 9 PM and the weather is forecast to be beautiful. So, bring the whole Family, your chairs/blankets and aptitude for good food and a fun time and come on over. Our water feature will also be running for the little ones to enjoy plus there will be a few other surprises. Music is by the Tribute and they will sound a lot like the Allman Brothers. Don’t miss this one!

2. Stage Door Players (SDP) … Proudly presents “Murder in the Vineyard” a Murder Mystery Dinner this Saturday at the Donaldson-Bannister Farm from 6:30 - 10 PM. The Farm is located at the intersection of  Chamblee Dunwoody Rd and Vermack Rd. Yes, you can be part of the detective group in this event which will be led by our own SDP Artistic Director Robert Egizio. 2018 Dunwoody Idol winner Josie James will entertain during the cocktail hour and the catering is by Dunwoody's Marlowe’s Tavern. For tickets call 770-396-1726 Ext 5 or click here Murder in the Vineyard Tickets. All funds go to support the SDP Arts. For you dudes still looking for a Mother’s Day gift there is a raffle item you will not want to miss out on.

3. Dunwoody Farmer’s Market … Annual “Grand Opening” will be this Saturday, May 4, at Brook Run Park. Hours are 8:30 AM - 1200 PM. Speaking on markets, Nel’s fruit and vegetable stand had its annual opening last week. It is located next to Chick-fil-A on Jett Ferry Rd. It is open Monday thru Saturday.

4. Paving … the 2019 paving is moving along smartly … we have 30 of the 57 streets on this years paving list already paved. There will be a lull in our paving until about mid-June when we will finish the rest of the streets.

5. Sink Holes … We have had a few sink holes lately. The causes are various. If you see one during normal working report it immediately to our Public Works Dept. at 678-382-6800. If it happens during non-working hours report it via our Public Works emergency Ph # 678-382-6850.

6. Security … I have mentioned this several times. Please don’t leave anything of value in view in your car. If you do you’re going to become a statistic. Remember it takes the bad guys less than 15 seconds to break into your car. Ladies, when you are shopping, DO NOT leave your purse and/or wallet in your shopping cart as you shop. If you do, sooner or later you will become a statistic. Vigilance is required to prevent these things happening to you or a family member, friend, etc..

7. Brook Run Park … The park is open and will remain open but major construction enhancements are in progress. With good weather, we hope to have the construction complete by DEC 31, 2019. We have completed the resurfacing of the playground in Brook Run Park so the kids can play at Food Trucks tonight.

8. Stream Clean-up … The stream clean-up on APR 13 was a success but we could have used more volunteers. We started at the new trail bridge over Nancy Creek and finish at I-285. We picked up two truckloads of trash of all shapes and sizes. Thanks to all those that volunteered!

9. Lemonade Days and Monarchs and Margaritas … Both of these events were huge successes and are outstanding examples of community spirit building events. All the funds raised go directly into enhancing the Donaldson-Bannister Farm from Lemonade Days and Dunwoody Nature Center from Monarchs and Margaritas. Thanks to the folks at Dunwoody Preservation Trust for running Lemonade Days and the folks at Dunwoody Nature Center for running Monarchs and Margaritas. Thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed themselves. If you missed it this year next year don’t miss Dunwoody Idol … you will see some real talented young singers. Who needs America Idol when we have Dunwoody Idol in our own park!

10. Dunwoody Arts Festival … This popular event will be on May 11 and 12 in Dunwoody Village.

11. I have to run … more in a few days. Please pass this on to your friends, neighbors and members of your HOA. If anyone wants to be added to my email list just let me know. Thanks for all each of you do to make us a city with a family atmosphere. Let’s all work to create the mutual respect that everyone deserves! See you around town!

Let Us Continue to Build Our City Together!

Dunwoody 4th of July t-shirts available at Art Festival today & online.

https://dunwoodyoutfitters.com/products/july-4th-shirt

Happy Mother's Day to everyone and I hope your day is filled with joy from all the people who love you!

Yesterday I took my lovely bride and the mother of my three boys to the Dunwoody Art's Festival to buy various trinkets that caught her fancy and one of our stops was to talk to the girls of Dunwoody Outfitters who now have Dunwoody 4th of July t-shirts on sale.  The Art's Festival will still be happening in full force today until 5 p.m. and girls are stationed near the shuttle bus pick up, in front of the Press Blend Squeeze juice and sandwich shop, so if you are interested in buying a shirt to support these young entrepreneurs, please stop by.

I know what I will be wearing in the State's Largest 4th of July Parade, maybe you can join me?

Pedestrian Safety Action Plan

The Public Works Department recently completed the pedestrian safety study funded by City Council.  The final report has been posted on the city website at: www.dunwoodyga.gov/Departments/Public_Works/Pedestrian_Safety_Action_Plan.aspx

The study looked at all of the existing crosswalks in the city that are not already protected by a stop sign or traffic signal and a few potential new locations.  The city also met with "Safe Routes to School" representatives at each elementary school.  The report summarizes the findings and provides a prioritized list of recommendations to improve pedestrian safety at these unprotected crossings.

Some of the recommendations can be implemented through the city's normal maintenance budget.  For the higher cost improvements, our intent is to seek capital funding and will be discussed at the June 9 City Council meeting. I fully support the pedestrian safety improvements, as public safety (in its many forms) is one of the reasons we exist as a city.

Demolition Underway at Brook Run Park

The demolition of the unused one-story administration building near the front gate of Brook Run Park is currently underway.  The broken tennis courts will also be removed as part of this demolition and the pervious surface will be restored. Please be careful in these areas of Brook Run Park.

Video from the Dunwoody City Council Meeting of March 12th

Recap, this was a work session were there were no real votes taking place but it was the first time Council could comment publicly on the new Georgetown Plan.  Besides that, we discussed the Tilly Mill / North Peachtree intersection, and 14 different things including a possible change to the alcohol ordinance to allow "Growlers" (Gallons of beer served to go from a tap) to be sold.  Unintended consequences was the big issue on this item and it needs to be crafted carefully so to protect the community from opening a loophole for establishments that were not intended.

Dunwoody Art Festival needs volunteers - May 7 and 8

Volunteer, click here

Plans for Dunwoody Art Festival 2011 are in full swing.  The Festival will be Mother’s Day weekend, May 7 & 8.  This year, we’re hosting 180 local, regional and national artisans who create fun and whimsical work.

Looking toward this year’s Festival, we can’t help but remember the success of last year’s event.  Volunteers were certainly one of the big reasons that Dunwoody Art Festival was just named “Best New Event” by the Southeast Festivals and Events Association. The Mother’s Day show picked up the gold medal among festivals from Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.  We truly feel we won this prestigious honor because of all of you – our wonderful volunteers who helped present this colorful and whimsical show to the Dunwoody community. Without your support and generosity, the Festival would not have reached this level of success.  We share this award with you!

 Get Your Free T-shirt
Dunwoody Crier readers voted and decided that the whimsical owl by Karen Fincannon will grace the front of the official Dunwoody Art Festival t-shirt.  All volunteers will receive one of these colorful shirts, which they will wear during their volunteer shifts at the event.

Chamblee Dunwoody Road will close between Mt. Vernon Road and Dunwoody Village Parkway and will be transformed into Main St. with thousands of visitors and volunteers.  We hope to see you there!

Win Gift Certificates To Our Fabulous Dunwoody Restaurants
Over 350 volunteers are needed to produce this fun and exciting event that Dunwoody friends and neighbors can call their own. As a thank-you, we’re having a weekly drawing for a $25 gift certificate from some of our local restaurants. Three lucky volunteers will each win one of these treats every week.  To win, you must be signed up to volunteer:
- There is no limit on the number of times you can win.
- The more positions you sign up for, the more chances you have to win.
- The earlier you sign up, the greater the chances you have of winning.
- Winners will be drawn each Wednesday through May 4 and will be announced weekly.
- Winners may pick up their gift certificates during the Festival at the Volunteer Check-in tent
Thank you for your wonderful show of community spirit in the great City of Dunwoody.  If you have any questions regarding volunteering, please feel free to contact me at DunwoodyArtFestival@gmail.com.

Dunwoody City Council - long meeting / short update

Dunwoody City Council work session started at 7 and executive session ended around 11:15, so it was a long evening.

Key updates - upset to learn that my video failed about 50 minutes into the recording but here is the start of the meeting. I do know that people (including Chris Pike the City Finance Director) were watching online for some if not all of the session.  I am really looking forward to someday having the City take over the recording and streaming video of all meetings with a possible replay on Comcast.  (I'm told that day is coming but it can't get here fast enough for me.)  I would also love to have the streaming video of all Community Council, Planning Commission and ZBA meetings but we will wait to see what the city staff recommends.

Doug Thompson qualified on Monday for the district three City Council seat and I'm interested in seeing if anyone else will step forward.  Someone said I scared off anyone who was semi-interested with my blog from yesterday and my reply was if they were only semi-interested then they shouldn't be applying.

Was told that Gov Sonny Perdue signed HB203 into law on Friday allowing the transfer of parks and bond money to Dunwoody. Expect conversations between the city and residents regarding Dunwoody's park and recreation priorities to begin soon.  Expect a fight with the County over the funds promised to Brook Run.  My first priority for the parks is the safety of the facilities and I was reassured that this is also a priority of the staff once we take over.

Was told that our Safe Routes to Schools grant application that the City and Kingsley Charter Elementary School submitted when the city was less than 30 days old was just approved and it may mean up to $460,000 in capital improvements around the school; i.e. sidewalks.  Look at our original application.

In other Safe Routes to Schools news, the next time you drive down Peachford near Peachtree Charter Middle School; take a look at the new ADA ramps that now line the street.  Perfect for strollers, little kids on bikes, wheelchairs and those who can't deal with the curbs.

The city's first quarter financial statement looks good and on track.

Improved 911 services could cost the city up to an additional $500,000 to switch to a flat fee service offered by John's Creek and Sandy Springs.  Starting our own, could cost even more?

The Dunwoody Comprehensive Land Use Plan was to be discussed but there wasn't the time available to do it justice therefore Council will have a special called meeting for next Monday to discuss just that.

Maybe it's just me but I don't understand the passion that some members of the community have over signs.  I missed last meeting where the issue was discussed for two hours and will need to listen to that prior to next meeting where I will be voting on the issue.  Tonight's discussion regarding the Art Festival Signs seemed silly to me and would have been completely mute if we the City Co-Sponsored the event as I now believe we should have.  That being said, I am interested in hearing from the business community adjacent to the festival as to their personal financial success at the event.  Everything I saw and heard from the event was positive but am looking forward to a full analysis.  I do know that my family really enjoyed the event.
