PDK Airshow this Saturday 12 to 5 pm in Chamblee - Free Admission but parking is $15 per car. Do you know how to report PDK Noise Complaints?

DeKalb-Peachtree Airport is happy to announce that the Good Neighbor Day Air Show and Open House is returning Saturday May 14, 2022Planes, food, classic cars, kids zone and lots of entertainment will be back at PDK for this years air show. Come all, old and young for some fun in the sun at PDK.

As with any airport, aircraft noise is generated from its operations. However, the degree to which noise affects an individual is subjective to flight operations, geography & weather. Below are some resources to help you learn more about PDK and the effects of its operations on noise: Have a complaint?

*If you wish to file an aircraft noise complaint, you have options of a web form, a dedicated app, a phone call to (770) 936-5442 or an email to the Complaint Hotline.

Please contact Environmental and Noise Analyst, Korey Barnes for any questions  kbarnes@dekalbcountyga.gov or 770-936-5420

There is a PDK Advisory Board appointed by DeKalb Commissioners to assist the DeKalb BOC & Commissioner Robert Patrick with oversight and these meetings are held monthly, open to the public and all minutes and videos of the meetings are available here

There is also a new PDK Master Plan in the works as required for Federal Funding and there are people and organizations with concerns of excessive growth but from what I read the growth will be more hangers and no new runway expansions.

  • Common Aircraft Flight Tracks - Interested in learning about the typical aircraft flight tracks over a potential house or neighborhood? Do you have general questions about how PDK operates? Contact PDK's Noise Information office by email, or call (770) 936-5440 and ask to speak with the Airport Noise & Environmental Analyst to set up a consultation.

This is the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA's) metric for measuring the impact of aircraft noise on a community. To be impacted by aircraft noise (according to the FAA), one must live within the 65 DNL noise contour).

Tuskegee Airmen to be honored during Atlanta Warbird Weekend at PDK Airport on Saturday & Sunday

The Atlanta Warbird Weekend (AWW) is an annual event dedicated to the remembrance and celebration of the men, women and machines of The Greatest Generation. In metro Atlanta, there are significant historical resources and AWW is the catalyst to bring together the organizations, aircraft and people that keep this history alive and engage families and businesses that want to keep this spirit alive.

EVENT HOURS, SAT & SUN 9:00am-4:00pm

This year, the theme of the 4th Annual Atlanta Warbird Weekend, Oct. 7-8, 2017,
will honor and salute the Tuskegee Airmen.

The Tuskegee Airmen, the first cadet graduates to earn their wings 75 years ago at Tuskegee-- becoming the first black U. S. Army Air Corps pilots, have a rich history that begins in WWII but reaches far beyond those confines. In conjunction with the celebration of the accomplishments of the Tuskegee Airmen, the weekend will also place a focus on the accomplishments of all African-American pilots from WWII to the present.

The Commemorative Air Force Dixie Wing will assemble at Dekalb-Peachtree Airport all the type of airplanes flown by the Tuskegee Airmen. Along with other famous aircraft such as a FG-1D Corsair, SBD-5 Dauntless dive bomber, T-6 Texan, C-46, Stearman bi-planes, Douglas DC-3 and after four years a B-17 Flying Fortress will offer rides and cockpit tours.

Meet WWII Veterans and noted authors, attend a WWII 8th Air Force Fighter Mission Briefing, enjoy 1940’s Hollywood entertainers, visit with WWII reenactors, participate in a photography workshop and attend a dinner symposium with the original Tuskegee Airmen at the 57th Fighter Group restaurant on Saturday evening.

Atlanta Warbird Weekend is a two-day WWII Warbird Rides Event. The weekend holds more than just aircraft rides and cockpit tours. Immerse yourself in the WWII era with historical reenactors, military equipment displays, live 1940’s era music, museum collections, bomber turret displays, meet “Pin-up” girls and get your “smooched” calendars, Warbirds in Review – hear how these rare aircraft defended democracy, book authors and meet members of the Greatest Generation – pilots, gunners, crewman and more!

PDK Advisory Board position available for citizen participation.

PDK Flight Path

My friend and former President of the Dunwoody North Civic Asociation, Mr. David Fowler has served on the Peachtree DeKalb Airport Advisory Board since 2002 where he advises on airport issues from a local citizen perspective.  Mr. Fowler recently married and moved outside DeKalb County, therefore, he will need to step down from the board where he has lobbied for many years to limit airplane noise on behalf of our community.

Mr. Fowler believes it is critical for us to help DeKalb Commissioner Kathie Gannon find someone who can walk the line between citizen and government and give Kathie valuable feedback when needed. The meetings are the 2nd Monday of each month and average about an hour each. The airport management usually presents issues of concern and the public is afforded time for comment each month. The AAB then makes recommendations to the commissioners.

If anyone is interested in serving on the committee, Commissioner Kathie Gannon can be reached directly by email at kgannon@dekalbcountyga.gov and if someone wants to talk to Mr. Fowler directly about the duties of position I can connect you - just reach out to me.

Finally, I would like to thank Mr. David Fowler for his many years of tirelessly serving our community and I wish him and his bride many years of happiness.

Dunwoody tidbits worth sharing.

Positive Tweet worth sharing - stop iphone tracking.

Brook Run Park is being remade under Dunwoody management
Dunwoody Parks Director Brent Walker said Brook Run Park’s master plan, written in 2010, will be updated next year. Feedback from the community will tell the city what kind of amenities to add to the park.

DeKalb-Peachtree Airport upgrades facility as it seeks more business
People living near DeKalb-Peachtree Airport who are concerned about noise “have nothing to worry about,” says its newly appointed interim director, even as the airport strives to bring in more business.

DHA discusses police issues
Grogan said crime was up 6 percent this year in Dunwoody, citing an increase this year in domestic-related cases, particularly on the east side of town.   “You have a higher level of crime in apartment communities,” he said, “because of the transient nature.”   He also mentioned crimes such as car break-ins around Perimeter Mall.

Dunwoody Police Chief says all officers wear body cameras, ‘most like it’
After a bit more than a month after outfitting all Dunwoody officers with chest-mounted cameras, Grogan said most of them like it.      But officers at first acted warily about the body cameras, Grogan said, just like he saw when training officers to use the then new dashboard cameras as a lieutenant for Marietta Police.     “People were just raising Cain,” Grogan said, “with an ’I don’t want the bosses watching me’ kind of mentality.”

FAA getting closer to setting rules that might affect PDK and Dunwoody

Dunwoody is directly in the line of PDK runways.

April Hunt of the AJC did an update on the FAA changing procedures which may affect PDK flight operations, whereby final comments on the proposals are due to the FAA by April 3rd.

I have read the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) several times and pulled a few key paragraphs out of the text and placed them down below.  I am not a pilot nor overly knowledgeable on this subject except that I have written about this subject before (here, here, here, here and hear) and did sign a resolution against possible changes once I understood the basics.

I have asked the City Attorney to verify that the above multi-jurisdictional resolution has been filed with the Federal Aviation Administration at least once and to do so again as required in the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in opposition with the changes affecting PDK.

Here is a link to the FAA NPRM document and the key paragraphs that I thought relevant have been copied below.

The Committee recommended that the current 8,000 feet and 6,000 feet Class B airspace floors over PDK be retained, or kept as close to the current altitudes as possible, in order to maintain efficient operations at PDK.
One commenter opposed the lowering of the Class B floor in the
vicinity of PDK from 8,000 feet to 5,000 feet because it could cause
compression of VFR aircraft given the fact that the PDK Class D
airspace ceiling is 3,500 feet.
The existing Class B floor above PDK is 8,000 feet, while
immediately to the east and south of PDK, the existing floor is 6,000
feet. Under the proposed Class B changes, the floor of Class B airspace
above the southern half of the PDK Class D airspace would be 5,000
feet; to the northeast, the floor would be 6,000 feet; and to the
northwest, the floor would be 7,000 feet. This would still give pilots
room to navigate north of the PDK airport eastbound at 5,500 feet. It
is true that the proposed change would eliminate the 5,500 foot VFR
altitude over the southern half of the PDK Class D airspace. This may
require the pilot to make a choice to fly eastbound below 3,000 feet
AGL or to fly further north in order to fly above 3,000 feet AGL and
below the Class B airspace.

Never pass a children's lemonade stand and other miscellaneous items that have crossed my desk.

Saturday from 11 - 2 pm
  • My kids love my never pass a children's lemonade stand rule because they know it's guaranteed liquid refreshment and if their lucky it also provides a cookie, but on top of everything it is also a life lesson for both my kids as well as the proprietor of the lemonade stand.

Four Dunwoody families are proud to be hosting the second annual Alex's Lemonade Stand this coming Saturday, June 4 from 11-2pm to raise funds for childhood cancer. The stand will be at 5218 Forest Springs Drive off Mt Vernon Road (Dunwoody Club Forest subdivision). The kids will be selling fresh squeezed lemonade and baked goods. Any donation amount is welcome......all to benefit this great organization.

  • Blogs come and blogs go.  Ms. Sustainable Pattie Baker has shuttered her Sustainable Pattie blog to focus on her upcoming best seller, Food for my Daughters

  • Dunwoody Mom over at the Dunwoody School Daze blog did a nice breakout of the Dunwoody numbers in the DeKalb County School System 2020 Vision, 10 Year Master Facilities Plan and SPLOST IV Projects, the DeKalb County School Watch blog elaborated and Rick Callihan on the Dunwoody Talk blog then put his spin on what the numbers mean to him.

  • If I had the option to change the setup of the Dunwoody City Council, I wouldn't.  Every Dunwoody resident elects four of the seven seats (Mayor and three at large seats) with the other three elected locally but hopefully always governing for the greater good of the city as a whole.  This November is a big election and it allows sweeping change by clearing house of all four at large candidates, changing individual members or reelecting those who have proven themselves worthy.

  • At the last City Council meeting Mayor Wright mentioned this article regarding municipalities breaking out individual service contracts to various companies for contracted city services.  This model has served the City of Dunwoody well, but if memory serves me correctly the sole service bidder for Dunwoody backed out because there were other options being publicized and publicly reviewed.   Kudos again to Dan Weber & Don Boyken.

  • The City of Sandy Springs has 20 job openings mostly related to city planning, building inspection, code enforcement, public relations, arborist, and administrative assistant. Another link which may work better.
  • This Saturday from Noon to 5 is the PDK Good Neighbor airshow, free admission with $5 parking.

Is PDK Airport up for an expansion of allowing larger aircraft? DeKalb BOC votes Tuesday and PDK Watch wants your involvement.

PDK Expansion of allowing Larger Aircraft?
I received the following message about possible PDK Airport expansion from the PDK Watch group asking that I forward the information. I am happy to do so even though I am not up on the specific details but maybe our DeKalb representative Ms. Kathie Gannon will fill us in on the details?

John

Dear Community Leaders,

I am taking the liberty of sending you a very time-sensitive ACTION ALERT about an upcoming vote on Tuesday morning by the DeKalb Board of Commissioners that could expand size of jets allowed to use PDK Airport.  If this is a concern to you or to others in your neighborhood associations, I would welcome your sharing this information to your e-mail lists or otherwise circulating as widely as you can.

My apologies for the lateness of this message. Not until early Saturday afternoon did I become aware that our efforts to work with the Board of Commissioners to amend the  proposed 2010 PDK Airport Layout Plan had apparently reached a dead end.

Thank you for your consideration considering this information and making it as widely available as possible to concerned community members.

Communications Director
PDK Watch Inc.  on behalf of Open DeKalb Inc.

October 24, 2010
Dear Citizens Concerned about PDK Airport Expansion,

Your help is urgently needed to try to avoid approval of a document that--if not amended--could be used to support significant expansion of PDK Airport.  I've indicated below what the problem is, why it is important, and what you can do to help.

In brief, the DeKalb Board of Commissioners is set to vote on Tuesday, October 26, on the proposed 2010 PDK Airport Layout Plan, which incorrectly claims the weight-bearing capacity of the main runway is 75,000 rather than the currently-indicated 66,000 lbs.  If the Airport Layout Plan is not amended back to 66,000 lbs., the size of the jets allowed to use PDK would increase. To convince the Commissioners to support this important amendment, your brief e-mail messages to the Commissioners within the next two days are crucial (see full details below).

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

Since Spring 2010, a proposed new 2010 PDK Airport Layout Plan (ALP) has been under consideration.  The PDK Airport Administration--now led by PDK Airport's Acting Director Mike Van Wie--has stated that the the proposed 2010 ALP merely "describes" the state of PDK Airport at this time--that it is not a projection for future PDK development and expansion. Yet a crucial change has been unobtrusively slipped into this 200-page document that would, in fact, support further PDK Airport expansion.  A final vote on the proposed 2010 ALP is scheduled at the DeKalb Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday morning, October 26, 2010, just two days from now.

The key change in the proposed 2010 ALP that we feel must be amended, indicates that the weight-bearing capacity PDK  Airport's main runway has an engineered capacity of 75,000 lbs., rather than the 66,000 lbs. that previous ALP's have indicated.  A careful engineering assessment of the proposed change by a professional structural engineer who designs airport runways indicates that there is no engineering basis that can justify such a change and that saying that the runway is engineered to a 75,000 lb. capacity would be "fraudulent."

Since late spring, board members from Open DeKalb Inc., including Norma Herd, Susan Gouinlock, and myself, have been addressing these issues with the Board of Commissioners and--with the aid of Commissioners Jeff Rader, Connie Stokes, and Elaine Boyer--we have attempted to get the proposed 2010 ALP amended so that it accurately describes the weight-bearing capacity of the main runway as 66,000 lbs.

As a result of these efforts, a vote on the ALP has been deferred three times during the past three months  The vote on the ALP this Tuesday, however, will be the final one.  At the very end of this past week, we heard the bad news from Commissioner Rader that he does not believe he has the necessary votes to amend the ALP.  The other key commissioner who represents our area, Kathie Gannon, is expected to support describing the main runway as 75,000 lbs.--even though the runway is not engineered to that capacity--and a majority of the Commissioners are expected to follow her lead.

WHY IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?:

For the Board of Commissioners to vote for a document incorrectly indicating that the engineered weight-bearing capacity of PDK Airport's main runway is 75,000 rather than 66,000 lbs. would, in effect, be to approve a major policy change authorizing the expansion of PDK Airport without a full and open discussion of the crucial issues involved. To take such action would undercut recent efforts by concerned community members during the past year to work out more mutually advantageous arrangements between the PDK Airport and concerned community members.  Such an action might also derail the ongoing negotiations with the highest levels of DeKalb County government to seek an approach other than legal action to try to resolve community disagreements with PDK Airport actions.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?

The most immediate need is for concerned citizens to send an outpouring of brief e-mail messages today and tomorrow the to all the members of the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners, urging them to amend the proposed 2010 PDK Airport Layout Plan back to the existing 66,000 lb. engineered weight limit.

Your messages should include just a few brief sentences identifying yourself and expressing your concern politely.

Each message must be directed to an individual commissioner (see names and e-mail addresses below), since messages to all the commissioners are blocked by anti-spamming devices.

Many messages, not lengthy or argumentative ones, are likely to be most effective.  Some of the commissioners evidently do not believe that more than a handful of individuals are concerned about PDK Airport noise and operations.  Please let them know that is not the case.

Here are the names and e-mail addresses of the DeKalb County commissioners, in order of their districts.  Please send your messages NOW:

1.  Elaine Boyer    ctownsend@dekalbcountyga.gov
2.  Jeff Rader     jrader@dekalbcountyga.gov
3.  Larry Johnson     larryjohnson@dekalbcountyga.gov
4.  Sharon Barnes Sutton     sbsutton@dekalbcountyga.gov
5.  Lee May     lmay@dekalbcountyga.gov
6.  Kathie Gannon    kgannon@dekalbcountyga.gov
7.  Connie Stokes     conniestokes@dekalbcountyga.gov

Please write NOW, and also further circulate this message to your friends and neighbors.   We face an uphill battle at this point, but if you don't act, we can't be successful.

Thanks for your attention to this important message, and, hopefully, for your prompt action.

Larry Foster
Communications Director
PDK Watch Inc. on behalf of Open DeKalb Inc.

P.S.  If anyone would like to attend the Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, October 26, to personally show your concern, here is the information you will need.  Note that what is most needed at this time, however, is your e-mail messages to the commissioners.

The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners meets at the Maloof Auditorium 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur.  Street parking is cheapest, requiring numerous quarters, or you can park in the high-rise parking across the street for a flat $6 fee (up from $2 previously).

The Commission meeting begins at 9 a.m.  During that first hour there is a half-hour public comment period, at which several of us will attempt to address the problems with the ALP.  The meeting proper is scheduled to start at 10 a.m., and the PDK Airport Layout Plan is at the top of the agenda, so even given a worst-case scenario, the vote will have been taken  by 10:30 a.m. or so.

Let me emphasize, however, that your immediate e-mail messages to the commissioners is what is most needed right now.

In case anyone would like to read a more detailed summary of the arguments, I have attached a more detailed discussion of the issue here for your reference

Congressman Tom Price weighs in on Hartsfield Class B Airspace Changes.

The Honorable J. Randolph Babbitt
Administrator
Federal Aviation Administration
800 Independence Avenue, SW
Washington, DC 20591

Dear Administrator Babbitt:

I am writing to express concerns about the proposed airspace change at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and its impact on neighboring Peachtree-DeKalb Airport.  Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is the busiest airport in the United States. As such, many recreational aviators have opted to use surrounding county airports to pursue their passion for flying. Likewise, the surrounding communities of Dunwoody and DeKalb County have voiced concerns over potential noise problems from PDK airport if the airspace change is adopted. It is imperative that the FAA balance the needs of recreational aviators and the communities surrounding these local airports before making a final determination regarding airspace changes.

Yours truly,

Tom Price, M.D.
Member of Congress

Comment deadline approaching on FAA modification of Class B Airspace

If you intended to file a comment to the Federal Aviation Administration regarding the Class B airspace changes to Hartsfield Jackson, which we are told will have a direct impact at PDK thereby lowering the airplanes closer to our homes, the deadline is this Saturday, April 3rd.  All comments need to be filed in triplicate as the Federal Register requires to the P.O. Box listed below and placed into the mail ASAP.

The City of Dunwoody passed a resolution against this change and it has already been mailed off to the FAA to beat the deadline.

This evening I was copied on a good example of a letter that a neighbor sent to the FAA and please feel free modify to suit your needs.
Mark Ward
Manager, Operations Support Group
Eastern Service Area, Air Traffic Organization
Federal Aviation Administration
P.O. Box 20636
Atlanta, GA 30320
March 30, 2010
Dear Mr. Ward,

I am writing today to provide my comments to the FAA’s proposal to lower Class B airspace over the northern part of Dekalb County, Georgia.

I am a long time resident of the neighborhood of Dunwoody North, which despite its name, is the southernmost part of the city of Dunwoody. We are directly north of Peachtree Dekalb Airport, and my street in particular is aligned almost perfectly with the landing strips at this regional airport. I know this because planes seem to line up for their approach over the reservoir to the north of us and approach the airport by a straight line right over my house.

I am very concerned with this proposal because of the common-sense reality that the same number of planes arriving and departing from PDK will now be required to do so in a compressed amount of airspace. We already know that VFR planes coming in on cloudy days approach much lower than under normal circumstances, and when that happens, they are a terrible nuisance in the neighborhood. Lowering the ceiling of available airspace by 1,000 feet just means that the noise, sight, and air pollution from these plans will be much worse on a much more regular basis.

In addition, though I understand that the specific air over my home will only be decreased by 1,000 feet, I know that the longer-term plan is actually to smooth out approach and take-off patterns for Hartsfield-Jackson, which will inevitably affect the smaller plans at PDK and other regional airports, as well. The general PDK area will be compressed by 3,000 feet and these smaller planes will be pressed into an even lower airspace than initially considered. It seems disingenuous of the FAA to purposely fail to include this in their community presentations, as though this impact to Class B space, though not directly above my house, will not have any impact. Of course it will.

There is no way that these changes to streamline operations at Hartsfield-Jackson, their logical impact on PDK, and the resulting impact on my neighborhood can be good for my neighborhood. The lower flight patterns will be a terrible setback to our neighborhood: the added noise and visual disruption will most certainly lead to more daily dissatisfaction for current residents and an obvious drop in home values when prospective buyers are disturbed by the low-flying planes.

I urge you to take these comments into account and find a way to ease the congestion for Hartsfield-Jackson in a way that has less of an impact on the residential areas of north Dekalb.

Cordially,

Video of March 8th Dunwoody City Council Work Session

Last nights work session meeting ran long to almost 11 pm with a short executive session.  The initial video timed out after 3 hours therefore I had to start a second video session for the last 20 minutes.  We followed the agenda but public comment lasted about 30 minutes and Councilman Ross added an agenda item on three new proposed bike routes through the city.  Besides talking about backyard chickens, we covered the important  topics of emergency medical services, a five year repaving plan, economic development and proposed a multi-family code compliance sweep.

The second big meeting of the evening is a scheduled work session of the DeKalb County School System where there is going to be citizen comments, latest financial report, latest human resources report, discuss spending 7 million on textbooks, spending another million on IT (fiber & cabling) and finally discussing a proposed Ethics policy.

All documents (except the proposed Ethics Policy?) are available here.

Peachtree Charter Middle School at 6 p.m.
4664 N. Peachtree Road
Dunwoody, GA 30338

A friend asked why I have been so quiet recently on all of the big events of the school system?  The first I guess is disbelief  that the man at the top would be doing something so illegal as to be criminal in nature. Not that I and others don't see waste and mismanagement but if Dr. Crawford Lewis is found lining his pockets with anything more than a few tanks of gas; the system as a whole will be in question and my guess is that accreditation my soon be under review if not pulled like Clayton County.  Second, this series of events may finally light a fire under the School Board to make drastic cuts and the results of Monday's meeting will tell a lot.  I highly encourage your attendance.

Remember 70 % of your property taxes go to the DeKalb County Board of Education. Are you paying attention or just paying the bill?

PDK meeting on Wed and again at Monday's Dunwoody Council meeting.

I missed the PDK meeting this past week hosted by the City of Chamblee though other members of the council were there.  The City of Dunwoody will be hosting representatives of DeKalb Peachtree Airport at next Monday's City Council meeting.

The following from Representative Mike Jacobs accurately and succinctly states the potential problem this will cause in Dunwoody, Chamblee, Doraville and parts of unincorporated DeKalb.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is planning to lower the Hartsfield Jackson flight ceiling over PDK Airport and the adjacent Northeast Atlanta neighborhoods by 3,000 feet, from 8,000 to 5,000 feet above sea level, or just 4,000 feet above actual ground level.

This change will substantially lower the altitude at which aircraft landing at PDK must fly when approaching the airport. It also means that passenger jets approaching Hartsfield Jackson Airport will be flying lower over our neighborhoods.

The management at PDK opposes this major change by the FAA.

PDK Watch and several neighborhood organizations are hosting a community meeting this Wednesday, February 17, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Clairmont Baptist Church, 3542 Clairmont Road. A representative of PDK Airport will be on hand to explain the FAA’s plans and how they will affect air traffic at PDK.
We need to carefully watch this over the next few weeks and be prepared to mobilize neighbors to oppose this plan where necessary citing some facts as provided by PDK.  For more information, from the airports perspective, please visit PDK website at:
