Dunwoody Park at the Dunwoody Nature Center is the best playground in Atlanta for sensitive skin and young ones.

What seems like many years ago, my wife & I had our favorite children's playground in a beautiful shaded park in Norcross.  Unfortunately that park is no longer as shaded as it once was and my boys rarely hang out in playgrounds therefore I wanted to show and tell our community about Dunwoody's beautiful hidden play areas among the trees.  Please stop by the Dunwoody Nature Center to set a spell, enjoy the creek, the shade and the children's laughter.

Brook Run Dog Park - final plan coming to the Dunwoody City Council on Monday.

http://jkheneghan.com/city/meetings/2014/Nov/111002014_Brook_Run_Dog_Park_Update.pdf

Brook Run Dog Park has been an active and popular amenity within Brook Run Park for the past 9 years. The dog park is enjoyed by many dogs and their owners for the natural beauty and shaded areas that it provides. Because of its popularity, the area that the current dog park resides is in need of extensive rehabilitation.

After several months of discussion with park users and the neighboring residents, a plan was submitted to Council in December 2013 to relocate the dog park to another area within Brook Run Park. However, due to funding concerns and public sentiment, Council requested that staff work with the neighbors of Brook Run Park and the Dog Park Board to create a design within the same area of the park that would accommodate both groups.

After meeting with both groups, the attached draft plan was created for Council’s consideration. Staff feels that it meets the majority of the requests from both groups. The dog park will have a 2 acre large dog park and a .25 acre small dog park and will now be 400 feet from the neighbors’ homes to decrease the disruption of barking dogs. Staff will also work with the Brook Run Dog Park Association to remediate erosion within the park after the fences are relocated.

Popular Brook Run Off-Leash Dog Park in Dunwoody to be redesigned near current location.

After numerous meetings and public discussions, it appears that the Brook Run Dog Park will be moved further away from the residents of the Lakeview Oaks Subdivision reducing the amount of noise.  The new location will retain a large amount of shade but it will now include the sunny field adjacent to the parking lot and close to the road that runs through the park.  A small dog area is also to be included but that was not shown on the concept drawing.

This draft from September looks to be a good compromise and I am guessing something close to the proposed plan will be finalized very soon.   Comments?

No definitive answer on Dog Park status - staff requested to again look at options on park.

At Monday nights Dunwoody City Council meeting there were numerous important items on the agenda to discuss but the room was filled primarily with supporters from the dog park.  Public comment was lively with several speakers including a Boy Scout asking that it not be moved.   I have been working for a compromise to keep the dog park in place and I believe the Dog Park Association submitted a great stating point in their proposal which is shown below.  If in the end, a compromise is reached where no one is completely happy with the final result, but the park can stay in the same general area; I believe it will be a win / win for the community.

Having been involved with the dog park issue for quite some time, I decided that my public statement should not be focused on the misdirected funds, the flawed bid process or the proposal being offered by staff; instead I went with the feelings and emotions of joy I witness by those who use the park on a regular basis.   It is my belief that if the dog park was moved to an inferior location that the community that has formed there would no longer exist.

What is the Brook Run Dog Park and why it is so special?

About ten years ago, a group of like-minded volunteers gathered together with a purpose of having a special place of their own. Much like the current City of Dunwoody, they worked the political system; they set up a non-profit organization, staked out boundaries and toiled for many hours to put into place what is now an extraordinary social center for man and beast alike.

The Brook Run Dog Park is primarily a playground for pets, but more importantly, it is a social center for people and I disagree with the plan for moving it because in doing so I believe it will kill that community.

The current dog park is shaded and cool which allows friendships time to flourish. It has a gravel-walking path, which allows exercise for animals and owners alike.

This is not a dog park, it is a people park, it is a social center, a senior center, and has been the birthplace of many marriages. The new location will not have the same amenities (namely the shade), therefore for it will not have the same draw; and the community will no longer flourish as it currently does.

In December, the Brook Run Dog Park Association put forward a compromise plan, which I believe has merit both in cost and in total scope as being the best plan to move forward to keep this community together, lower the noise and mitigate any supposed environmental damages.

I will be voting against moving the dog park and recommend that we revisit the plan presented by the Dog Park Association as it has a lower overall cost but more importantly I believe it is the right thing to do.  I am here to build communities – not kill them.

Dunwoody priorities as seen through the eyes of the Purchasing Department - Tree Canopy Obstacle Course / Dog Park / Active Recreation / New Police Vehicles and Warning Sirens in Parks.

Running a city is a complicated business with many intermingled moving parts but reviewing the city purchasing website will sometimes give you a glimpse of how we are serving you, what we are spending your money on and therefore to certain aspect, what our priorities are for improving the quality of life for the residents.  The typical Dunwoody homeowner with a $350,000.00 dollar home pays about $18 per month for all City of Dunwoody services and the City Budget goes into much greater detail on exactly how we plan to spend those tax dollars.

On Monday, the City Council is discussing a proposal for a possible Tree Canopy Obstacle Course at Brook Run Park that would operate at no cost to the city and in fact it would provide revenue as well as an amenity to the visitors of the park.  The proposed obstacle course would be situated in the roughly four acres to the west of the vacant dormitory building. The city would ensure the exact course maintains adequate buffers to protect residential property bordering this part of the park while rejuvenating an underutilized part of our parkland.  The sketch of the proposal is attached here and of course there will be lots of questions at the meeting on details not outlined.    Thoughts?

The City of Dunwoody is again soliciting bids from qualified contractors for Brook Run Park Dog Park Construction at a new location.  Back in December, I attempted to find a workable and less expensive solution to keep the dog park where it is and the Brook Run Dog Park Association presented a serious proposal to operate the facility and mitigate any issues.   The Council quickly compared the BRDPA proposal against a proposed contract to construct a new dog park but walked away from making any decision at that time.  The new dog park contract was deferred in December as Council had questions on cost and location of the proposed new park vs the cost and effectiveness of the proposed repairs to the current park. Several on Council were leaning towards and "hoping" for a compromise and since that time Council member Riticher has joined our ranks but little else has been done.   The City released the latest proposal to again move the dog park for a possible decision as soon as June.   The patrons of the dog park and the Brook Run Dog Park Association members are not pleased with the updated proposal and they are voicing their concerns to council in emails as well as on their Facebook page.   Residents of Lakeview Oaks who live behind the dogpark, as well as the new trail, want the dog park moved therefore Council will be weighing all sides and proposals to make a decision in the coming months.

The admin buildings at the front of Brook Run are coming down and tennis courts, sand volleyball & basketball courts are planned for that area as per the parks master plan but the trail was also placed in some of that space so we will need to see in the coming year what could be proposed for the area.

Touring Brook Run last week I noticed the new trail is really coming along with some sections needing extensive work in order to bring it up to grade, but it is that level of effort that will make it ADA accessible with just minor grade changes that will make it an ideal location for a young child to take a long safe bike ride.   During my stroll, I also noticed what appears to be an expanded section of the Dunwoody Community Garden being installed behind the original space for additional plots. With the new orchard that was installed around the garden, it is really a beautiful place.

Another tidbit shown on the city purchasing website is that the City of Dunwoody will be purchasing 22 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicles as the newest police vehicles for our officers.   The police vehicle currently in use was discontinued and it was decided that the amount of gear carried by our officers, the number of hours spent in the vehicles and the physical size of many of our officers necessitated the larger vehicle.

Finally an email crossed my desk stating that the City is purchasing two Federal Signal outdoor warning sirens with Weather Bug lightning detection to be installed at Dunwoody Park near the baseball fields and at Brook Run Park.   As Council already approved these purchases and they were below the $50,000 threshold for formal bids, the Acting City Manager went with the best product at the lowest price.

Dunwoody City Council Recap - Dog Park Contract & Concept of 5 acre park both deferred.

It was a very long evening for the last meeting of the year.  We started with Executive Session starting at 5 pm followed by the voting meeting starting at 7 pm which ran well past 11 pm.   Streaming video the last few meetings has been hit or miss for me with poor bandwidth (might be caused by the service I use and not the city?) and numerous dropped connections.  This evening I had software configuration issues because QuickTime was mistakenly installed or updated and my streaming software was not happy.  I tried to give notice that I would not be streaming and that the City feed would be available.   Hopefully that worked for you?

Based on my notes, everything requesting a vote passed as presented except for two items.

The new dog park contract was deferred as Council has questions on cost and location of the proposed new park vs the cost and effectiveness of the proposed repairs to the current park.  Several on Council might be leaning towards and "hoping" for a compromise.

The "Updated" concept of the 5 acre park still had the small band shell and it was discussed that we may need to cut back the plans in order to build in stages.  The City held a public meeting and comment cards were completed but Council never saw the cards, instead we only received filtered information.  Action was deferred for reworking.

Councilmember Shortal requested that we amend the master transportation plan to remove the proposed center lane on Mt. Vernon and was told that it is best discussed when looking at the big picture maybe during the Council Retreat in January.  All of the master plans should be reviewed (by Council / various Boards & the Public) every few years (5 might be right though some might need it sooner) to make sure they are still pointing in the correct decision.  In case a lawsuit is ever settled, I know I would like to discuss a change to allow "Active Recreation" and/or "Scheduled Sporting Events" on the back forty acres of Book Run.

Councilmember Bonser presented a bill (of about $1,700) for legal expenses and she was directed to file it against her personal expense account that contained enough to cover it.

Jim Riticher is sworn in on January 2nd.

Approval of Updated Concept Plan for Renaissance 5 Acre Park on the 19 Acre Property.
  • Not in the memo but my thoughts after discussions with neighbors as to why we would have three children's playgrounds so close together? Why not remove some more of the children's play structures and focus this specific park on activities for adults & seniors? Keep the splashpad, the sports courts and a very limited amount of playground but find activities and community gathering places that are not available elsewhere.
  •  Several Pickleball courts could be installed and the facility could house a league, the same could also be said for Shuffleboard courts, Horseshoe pits, an artificial putting green and maybe a chess pavilion could be built into the hillside on the corner allowing a shaded peaceful place to congregate between the two trail heads overlooking the park. I'm thinking that the band shell needs to go to Brook Run but we need to be creative with the hillside in this park concept.

Dunwoody Budget Discussions - Womack Vermack Roundabout and Brook Run Dog Park

At Monday's Dunwoody City Council Meeting several items were voted upon which surprised a few people, though as budgetary items they were fair game at the final vote of the budget.  The items below were both budget amendments to remove funding for specific projects or to remove funding for a specific aspect of a project.

The amendment to remove funding of the Womack Vermack roundabout was successful and the amendment to remove the funding needed to move the dog park to a better suited location until a decision could be made by Council if they wanted to close the dog park, failed to pass.
