Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and so much love that we announce the passing of John Michael Nash at the age of 51.

Michael is survived by his loving wife, Tracy Nash; his children Jordan (Kedrick) Harvey, and Anna Grace Nash; his granddaughter Kylee Harvey. He is also survived by his parents John and Barbara Nash, his siblings Leigh (Rusty) Townsend and Kenny (Gayle) Nash, his sister-in-laws Heather (John) Talipsky, Judi Wallace, Jami Krupilis, and Jenni (Jon) Schaffer, and multiple nieces and nephews who adored him.

A lifelong mentor and coach, Michael dedicated his life to growing young men through his love and passion for football (and anything else asked of him). "Coach" was one of his proudest titles, and his impact will live on in the countless lives he shaped both on and off the field. He had a prestigious coaching career that included his alma mater - Shiloh High School, a decade developing the Dunwoody High School Football program, and most recently began at Chattahoochee County High School.

Michael Nash was a man who could fill any role asked of him and do it with heart, humility, and strength. He was the kind of man you could count on to keep his promises, to never give up, and to give you the shirt off his back if that's what you needed.

Michael loved his wife, daughters, and granddaughter with a fierce and loyal love. He also shared an unbreakable bond with his parents and siblings, cherishing every moment spent together. Family was the heartbeat of his life.

He had a gift for making every stranger feel like a friend, and his laughter could light up any room. He loved to sing, dance, and entertain - always finding joy in bringing a smile to others. Whether he was telling a story, cracking a joke or breaking into song, Michael had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and loved.

When he wasn't cooking you a hot meal on the Big Green Egg, he was lifting your spirits with words of encouragement or wrapping you in one of his famously gentle bear hugs.

Michael will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His kindness, humor, and unwavering heart will never be forgotten.

Michael's celebration of life will be held at Dunwoody Baptist Church on October 12, 2025. The family will receive friends from 2-3 pm and a short service will be held from 3-4 pm. The family asks that you come dressed in colors showing how you know Mike. Whether that be your Wildcat Pride, your Chat Co. Panthers Gear or your War Eagle game day spirit.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mike Nash F.A.M.I.L.Y Fund.

Arrangements by Tim Stewart Funeral Home, 300 Simonton Road SW, Lawrenceville, GA 30046. 770-962-3100.

Dunwoody mourns the loss of a leader, a friend, a teacher, a parade marshal, a father, a husband and so much more, Coach Mike Nash.

Tributes to my friend Mike Nash are crossing my feed this morning after an evening of little sleep as I was notified late last night of Coach's passing.  Mike was a very special guy to this community and he (along with the dedication of his entire family) touched so lives as a coach and teacher.  Mike, Tracy & the girls; We Love You!

Below is a video of Coach Mike Nash, not saying goodbye, after 10 years of serving as the head football coach of Dunwoody High School.  Mike was honored on Sunday March 23, 2025 by Dunwoody Homeowners Association & named 2025 4th of July Parade Marshal.

Saturday Night don't miss Dunwoody High's Wildcat Fund benefit at Barn(n) in Dunwoody Village starting at 7 pm. Family Truckster is playing.

Saturday Night the sky's are clear and the temperature will be in the 60's therefore it will be a perfect night to celebrate everything great about Dunwoody High School.  The DHS Community Association is hosting a Dunwoody goes Hollywood fundraiser at Barn(n) in Dunwoody Village starting at 7 pm.

The musical entertainment for the evening will be Family Truckster which is an outstanding local band that will have the entire audience and at least one groupie up dancing the entire night. (I'm not naming names but he knows who he is.)

Tickets are $50 and includes one cocktail and the opportunity to bid on a bunch of silent auction items.  A couple of years ago my wife Kristin and I attended and won the silent auction for a bi-plane Ride over Atlanta and we are looking for other great deals this year.

We hope to see you there.

Paving Plan Map for 2024-2028 & listing streets to be paved each year.

The streets scheduled for resurfacing include the following: Adams Road, Adams Walk, Ashford Dunwoody Road, Ashwoody Parkway, Bridle Path, Buckline Circle, Buckline Court, Buckline Way, Buckline Crossing, Cambridge Trace, Chesnut Ridge Drive, Equestrian Court, Equestrian Way, Joberry Court, Northbrooke Circle, Northbrooke Lane, Perimeter Center West, Ridgeview Road (south end), Village North Court and Village North Road.

Recommendation from paving study
Increase annual pavement maintenance and rehabilitation funds
In the City of Dunwoody, approximately 14.9% of the pavement (53 lane miles) is classified in 2023 as being in 'poor,’ ‘very poor’, and ‘serious,’ conditions. Although the current annual fund ($3M/year) has been able to keep the overall condition above 70 and backlog at around 15%, it is recommended to increase the fund gradually to $4.0M/year to mitigate the challenges comes with increase materials and construction costs, inflation, and increased weight limit.

Dunwoody City Council Meeting at DHS Auditorium - January 22

The Dunwoody City Council is taking a council meeting "on the road" in 2024, and Dunwoody High School has been chosen as the host. The meeting will take place on Monday, January 22 at 6:00 pm, and everyone, including all students (and parents!) are invited to attend. Our day-to-day lives are most impacted by our local government, so come find out what happens at a City Council meeting! Students can even speak for up to 3 minutes during the public comments portion about any issue or topic that matters to you. See Coach Berry or any member of Youth City Council if you have questions.

The formal agenda for this meeting is scheduled to be released around Friday January 19th.

John Heneghan sworn in for fifth term, Rachel Waldron fills Park Director role, Chief Billy Grogan announces his retirement and the Dunwoody City Council to meet at the high School on the 22nd.

Look at the smile on that ladies face above, it brings me great joy whenever I see this photo.   Good thing too as I'm still very happily married to that young lady.

Monday I had the honor of being sworn in for my fifth term on the Dunwoody City Council, having served since original incorporation.  Looking back to 2008, I am very proud of all this city has accomplished, but as a newly sworn City Councilman I need to rededicate myself to continue looking forward, always trying to do the next right thing for my community.

That being said, there are new residents who are unaware of our history so here is a link from 2018 highlighting my Ten Year recap of cityhood where the post has links and stories going much further back in time.   Maybe I'll do another recap at my 19th year mark, at the conclusion of this term?   God willing.

Serving in this capacity is a responsibility I do not take lightly as the challenges the City is facing now, may be different than in our start up years but it is no less daunting.  I have full faith in the City Manager, Staff, the Mayor and the Council to continue moving this City forward by providing quality service to its citizens, pushing though capital projects that foster the greatest good while still encouraging the business community to keep investing into our community.

Changes are happening within City Hall as we recently lost our Parks Director Mr. Brent Walker to the City of Sandy Springs but after an extensive interview of possible outside candidates, our Deputy Parks Director Rachel Waldron has already been named as his permanent replacement.   Rachel has been with us for many years and will continue to do a great job for us.

In other news, Chief Billy Grogan also announced his pending retirement on June 1st after 40 years of policing.  Kudos to Chief Grogan for all that he has done for our community and I wish him well in is pending retirement.  We have known this retirement announcement was coming as some point and City Council pushed for an external review of the police department to have an action plan that has already been started and I would expect the next chief, to quickly implement the many suggestions in the Berry Dunn report.  It is my intention for Council to hopefully find the funds to make the requested staffing improvements that we need to make as well.  As we now have a few months to start a search for replacement for Chief Grogan, I am unsure what our City Manager and Mayor will do as I also have great respect for Deputy Chief Mike Carlson and believe he is ready to step up into the main role.

Monday is the Martin Luther King Holiday and a day of service is planned within the community with tree planting, daffodill planting as well as general clean up of the Book Run Playground, details are here.   There is also a food collection happening and if you would like donate there are details in the link above - please do if your are able.

In a couple of weeks, it appears that the Dunwoody City Council meeting of January 22 will be taking place at Dunwoody High School at our usual 6 pm start time to join the Dunwoody Youth City Council to foster some interesting discussion and public comment.  The last time we did something similar at the high school, I gave out 100's of hugs.  I will probably do the same this year just not sure of the format as it is also a formal meeting?   Guessing more details will be coming soon.

Talking to your middle school son about suicide is not easy, explaining that everyone is special therefore deserving of respect and love was much easier. #hugs

As usual this time of year, I review and rededicate myself to the City of Dunwoody Mission, Vision and Values and usually publish them.  The Mission and Vision statements were updated a few years ago and as much as I respect the changes, the original statements still mean something to me too, so I published them both.

Finally, I came across this photo of the core group of the Citizens for Dunwoody who worked on incorporation planning for years before finally becoming a city.   Damn we all looked so good.

Ready for Friday Night Lights !!!

Dunwoody High School Wildcats will battle our cross town rival Chamblee High School Bulldogs for the Golden Spike and a year of bragging rights! Go Wildcats!!!

Game time is 7:30 PM at N. DeKalb Stadium!   It is highly likely that with two local highly competitive football teams playing each other that this game may sell out or at the very minimum, there will be long lines at the stadium box office, therefore I recommend buying your tickets in advance from GoFan.

Buy your tickets here.

The AJC has a nice article here, and Maxpreps has team stats and pre-season previews of both Dunwoody and Chamblee.

As a special treat for all those fans who are unable to physically make the game, the talented crew, parents and supporters of DHS Wildcat Football are also offering a Video Feed of the game on Youtube and a Play by Play audio broadcast on Mixlr Internet Radio.

$25,000 donation from lifelong Dunwoody resident Dr. David Goodchild establishes the Goodchild-Fortenberry-Bass Scholarship.

Thank You Dr. Goodchild!

Dunwoody, have you donated to this worthy cause?

 https://dunwoodyalumni.org/dhs50/

A new college scholarship is being established at Dunwoody High School (DHS) to support high-achieving students facing challenges. The Goodchild-Fortenberry-Bass Scholarship will be awarded in increments of $2,500.00 per year for the next ten years to a different graduating senior. These ten scholarships are made possible by a $25,000 donation from lifelong Dunwoody resident Dr. David Goodchild, who presented a check to his longtime friends DHS Principal Tom Bass and Academy of Finance founder Steve Fortenberry.

“I believe that a donation to Dunwoody High School is the best investment you can make in our children and the City of Dunwoody as a whole,” Dr. Goodchild said. Both Principal Bass and Mr. Fortenberry hope that this gift will inspire others to invest in public education, our children, and the community.

The $25,000 donation will fund the Goodchild-Fortenberry-Bass scholarship, which will be annually awarded to the student with the highest GPA, coming from a challenging background or home life. Student applicants will submit an essay, along with a teacher recommendation. The first scholarship will be awarded later in the school year, as DHS celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Dr. Goodchild indicates that “Mr. Bass and Mr. Fortenberry are included in the scholarship because Mr. Bass has brought unparalleled leadership and pure enthusiasm to the school, which is so fitting for its 50th anniversary. Mr. Fortenberry is included because over 50 years ago when Steve and I were finger painting at a church preschool in Dunwoody, I never imagined that he would become such an innovative force in education, spearhead so many building initiatives for the campus, and be so committed to this school and the community.” It is important to note that Dr. Goodchild and Margie have two children, Judy and David, who are students at DHS. For decades Dr. Goodchild has been funding scholarships, organizations and sports teams at DHS, as well as other educational institutions, but this year all of his educational and civic donations are going exclusively to DHS. In addition to funding the new scholarship this year, Dr. Goodchild is also supporting the DHS volleyball team as a platinum sponsor and the DHS football program as a blue sponsor.

“With today’s rising costs people may be more reluctant to give, but those costs are precisely why financial support is so important right now,” Dr. Goodchild cautioned. Dr. Goodchild is encouraging others to donate to the DHS Community Association, which is raising money to support academic, art, and athletic initiatives to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary. A donation link and more information can be found here: www.dunwoodyalumni.org/dhs50.

Details about the Goodchild-Fortenberry-Bass scholarship and application process will be made available to students and their families at a later date.
