City of Dunwoody to hold Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday Nov. 11 at 10 am at Brook Run Park Veterans Memorial

Veterans Day Ceremony
Monday November 11 at 10 am
Brook Run Park Veterans Memorial
4770 N. Peachtree Road

The City of Dunwoody will hold its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. on November 11 at the Brook Run Park Veterans Memorial (4770 N. Peachtree Road). The public ceremony is co-hosted by the Dunwoody Veteran Events Planning Committee and Dunwoody Parks and Recreation.
“Veterans Day is an important Dunwoody tradition,” said Bev Wingate, coordinator of the committee. “It is a time to commemorate and honor the many brave men and women who have sacrificed to defend our country and protect our freedoms. It is a time to express gratitude to them and their families for a debt that can never be repaid.”

Dunwoody Mayor Denis Shortal, Brigadier General USMC (RET), will be the keynote speaker. Dunwoody Police Major Michael Carlson, Georgia National Guard Captain, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

The Dunwoody Veteran Events Planning Committee includes veterans, active military, and community volunteers. The committee works in conjunction with the VFW, Dunwoody Woman’s Club and Dunwoody Parks and Recreation to present veteran events.

Local students will play an important role in this year’s Veterans Day Ceremony. The Dunwoody High School Air Force JROTC, led by Kenneth Bennett, Lt. Col. USAF (RET), will present the colors. The Dunwoody High School Chorus will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Mayor Pro Tem Lynn Deutsch will give the welcome and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Rev. Dr. David Lower, senior pastor at Saint Luke’s Presbyterian Church, will give the invocation. The ceremony is a rain-or-shine event.

Atlanta Veterans Job Fair at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Thursday June 21st. @RecruitMilitary

On June 21st I will be visiting the Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the first time and I can't think of a more rewarding reason as I will be searching for possible candidates with military service to fill a possible upcoming Federal vacancy where I work.

The Federal hiring process is not an easy one to navigate as most jobs are advertised on the USAjobs website and interested applicants typically apply on-line.  There are a few special hiring authorities that sidestep this on-line process and when it comes to Veterans, the Veterans’ Recruitment Appointment (VRA) is an excepted authority that allows agencies, to appoint eligible veterans without competition.

Hypothetically, if I was looking to fill a future Federal law enforcement or investigator type position in Atlanta, someone who had an attention to detail regarding regulatory issues, someone with Spanish language skills, who also had the ability to understand chemistry and technical engineer drawings; then you could possibly be hired without formal competition as long as your resume was accurate and your dd214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Military Duty) showed the proper requirements for VRA consideration.

There are currently 84 exhibitors scheduled to be in attendance looking to hire veterans & transitioning military personnel therefore if you have served this country with honor and are looking for a change in employment, please come out with plenty of resumes to talk to those who may have positions available.

Maybe I'll see you there?

City of Dunwoody Veterans Day Ceremony - Tuesday 10 a.m. at Brook Run Park

Veterans Day Ceremony

Tuesday, November 11

10 a.m.

We invite you to join your community to commemorate Veterans Day and honor the brave men and women who have served and currently serve in the United States Armed Forces.

Veterans Day is an official United States holiday that honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I (major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect). The United States also originally observed Armistice Day; it then evolved into the current Veterans Day holiday in 1954.
• Get a free haircut. Veterans who visit Great Clips shops on Nov. 11, can either receive a free haircut -- or a card for a free haircut to redeem by Dec. 31.

GPC Educational Symposium Will Highlight Legacy of World War II

Dr. Thomas Graham is on a mission to honor World War II veterans. The Georgia Perimeter College Dunwoody history professor and former U.S. Naval officer has been inspired to organize a week long educational symposium  Nov. 7 to 10,  followed by a USO-style Stage Door Canteen and Dance on November 11.

Graham teaches his students how what happened during World War II still affects their lives today, because of the service and sacrifice of the men and women who served almost 70 years ago.
“We recognize that the number of World War II veterans is rapidly decreasing,” Graham says. “This generation needs to know about them, they need to know how close the world came to being crushed by the Axis powers. Most World War II veterans don’t see themselves as heroes—they say, the ones that died, they were the heroes,” says Graham.

The free symposium will take an interdisciplinary look at World War II presented through a series of talks and panels—from the literature of the time, to the mathematical precision of the codes created to stymie the enemy, to the scientific breakthroughs of the period.

The talks will feature community members who are World War II veterans themselves, including members of the Tuskegee Airmen, and other World War II “flyboys,” as well as talks by those who grew up in Europe, Germany and China during the war.

Veterans Day opportunities for those who have served.

Veteran's Day is a day especially dedicated to honor those who have served and in advance of that special day, I wanted to point out a few opportunities to personally thank them for their service.

First, the Federal Government has special hiring priorities in place for those who have protected us.  The best link I can find that explains the various hiring programs is located here at http://www.fedshirevets.gov/job/veterans.aspx

Second, there are also many restaurants and companies who want to thank our veterans by providing them with discounts or a free meal. To those companies offering veterans a free meal or discount, the military community gives a collective thanks!  If you know of other programs or opportunities for Vets, please post them in the comments.  Thanks.

One generation honoring another, by honoring our flag.

In honor of Veterans Day, the Knights of Columbus from All Saints Catholic Church, area Veterans and Boy Scout Troop 434 held a Flag Retirement Ceremony.

Our flag serves as constant reminder to all of us that we live in a country where our freedom has been deeply purchased by blood, sweat, tears and ultimate sacrifice. We must not forsake what those in the service to this flag, and their families, have forfeited. As we depart the Birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps and enter into Veterans Day, thank you for all those who have served.
