Peachtree Corners town hall to discuss Spalding Drive Widening and Holcomb Bridge intersection improvements - Tuesday Night at Winters Chapel United Methodist Church

Meeting Tuesday Jan 21st - 7 pm
Winters Chapel United Methodist Church

Peachtree Corners Councilmember Phil Sadd (Post 1) is hosting a town hall meeting on Tuesday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Winters Chapel United Methodist Church, 5105 Winters Chapel Road.
Issues to be discussed include:
  • Spalding Drive Widening and Holcomb Bridge intersection improvements
  • Crime Prevention Initiatives
  • Town Center Upcoming Projects
  • Curiosity Lab Autonomous Vehicle Test Track
  • Re-development Efforts
“If you’ve ever driven on Spalding Drive between Winters Chapel Road and Holcomb Bridge Road during rush hour, you’ve probably experienced significant delays and extended wait times, said Councilmember Sadd. “At the town hall meeting, we will provide an overview of the Spalding Drive project and explain how it will help improve traffic flow and increase pedestrian safety.

“This project will bring incredible improvements to our city, and we want to provide our citizens an opportunity to understand the plans and ask questions.  In addition, we will provide updates on other key activities taking place throughout our city.”

The Peachtree Corners mayor and council members, as well as other elected officials with common jurisdiction, will be in attendance to inform citizens of key matters impacting the community.  The town hall meeting will include an open Q&A session, giving citizens an opportunity to voice concerns and ask questions of their local representatives.

The town hall meeting will be held in Peachtree Corners District 1, and is open to all citizens.

Redevelopment opportunities discussed for the Southeast side of the City of Dunwoody.

https://www.scribd.com/document/386937741/Dunwoody-Peachtree-Blvd-Study-08232018

This evening there was a presentation on the financial market forces affecting future re-development of the aging apartment complexes on the Southeast side of Dunwoody along Peachtree Industrial Blvd and abutting 285 at North Peachtree Road.  There was also a list of suggested improvements for the meeting attendees to vote upon which ranged from redeveloping the Winters Chapel area, adding mixed use to some apartment complexes, having public trails added through the large apartment complexes and other sidewalk and beautification suggestions.  Some of these ideas might sound great but know that the landowners have full control as to when they want to redevelop and where the trails will be allowed, therefore based on the current profitability of the apartments and the rate of return, the expectations are that change to these large parcels will be slow in coming.  That being said, these meetings are setting the stage for an action plan when redevelopment is eventually proposed.

Correction - @SunTrust meeting Wednesday night in Dunwoody regarding Hickory House property; Cyclebar, Cowfish, Food Trucks, Crier, 4th of July Parade

Lobster & Crab Spring Rolls from Cowfish at Perimeter Mall

First an update - Saturday night there was a change of plans as previously reported as my bride & I celebrated our children being away at camp by going to the restaurant Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar and on Sunday we went to Marlow's for a Fathers Day meal.  I hope all the Dad's had a great day and a special shout out to a couple of single mothers whom I know who fill both of the special roles.   You ladies Rock !!

SunTrust Bank is holding a public meeting tonight (Tuesday) Wednesday to discuss their plans to convert the old Hickory House into a new bank.  The meeting will be held at 5486 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd, Suite 8 starting at 6 pm to answer any questions the public may have.  As a sitting City Councilman I will be there to listen to all sides, as I have always listened to public presentations given to the community.  I am told a variance application has been submitted for three variances which will be heard at the August ZBA meeting.  They most likely will apply for two SLUPs related to the overlay requirements and it looks like that will be on the Planning Commission and City Council agendas in September (assuming they meet the July filing deadline).  A bank is allowed by right in that commercial zone and the property will not need to be rezoned.  I have already received email and some public communication on the subject from here & here but am looking forward to hearing more public comments on Tuesday.

Looks like the City of Peachtree Corners is hiring a new City Manager.

Community members collect funds to replace Archery Bows Stolen From Chesnut Elementary School Gym

Scary - DeKalb Public Schools go back August 8th and it is already creeping up on me as I am filling the family calendar for back to school events.

For those not at a swim meet or the SunTrust meeting, today is Dunwoody Food Truck Tuesday happening at the Park at Pernoshal Court (4575 North Shallowford Road.).

As a big guy who sits too much and sleeps too little, I have added a new exercise routine into my week to burn more calories.  As much as I enjoy a bike ride outside, CycleBar the new spinning concept on Ashford Dunwoody is perfect for me and I've already done ten classes and earned ten free rides by completing a challenge.  Here is a great review on CycleBar from the Just Peachy Blog and there is currently a Groupon for four classes for just $49.00.   There are free classes available on Saturday's.

The Crier has an article in the Tuesday edition that I may not be allowed to comment on as per the advice of the City Attorney?  That being said, I am told that the Mayor, the City Manager and/or the City Attorney would be happy to discuss the issues raised by any such article should you like further discussion of these issues or clarification. City Hall's phone number is 678-382-6700.

On Monday, July 4, 2016 at 9:00 a.m., the Dunwoody Homeowners Association and the Dunwoody Crier Newspaper will host the annual Fourth of July Parade featuring marching bands, floats, clowns, animal units and local celebrities. Last year the parade attracted over 2,500 participants and 32,000 spectators!        This year's theme is Duty Honor & Country.

Please contact Pam Tallmadge at 770-354-7653 or july4parade@dunwoodyga.org. Pam coordinates the parade and has numerous tasks that she currently needs help with.

Slingshot Entertainment Center with Go-Karts, Ninja Obstacle Course & Bowling is now open.

The first of it’s kind, Slingshot Entertainment is the largest indoor entertainment facility in Georgia! Located in the Metro Atlanta area, Slingshot features an interactive bowling lounge, 100% electric high-speed Sodi go-karting, a tri-level kids mega play arena, and the largest indoor ninja obstacle course in the United States!

I happened to be driving by when I saw the new sign with a few cars in the parking lot, so I stopped and discovered they were doing their soft opening today.   I took a quick tour of the Slingshot facility in what use to be the BJ's Wholesale Warehouse located at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard & Jimmy Carter.   The go-karts were going full steam and the bowling was operational with numerous TV's around the entertainment and drinking facility.   The Ninja Obstacle courses (both adult & kids) will be open in a day or two and they are still constructing a huge (told it would be Guinness World Record worthy) play room to keep the little kids occupied while the adults have their own fun.

All entertainment is half price this weekend for their soft opening.    Check it out.

Peace Service at Jones Bridge Park for Sandy Hook Elementary Community

The Peachtree Corners community will host a non-denominational CHILDREN'S PEACE SERVICE on Thursday, December 20th, 2012 at 5PM at Jones Bridge Park.

Please wear white and bring candles for adults, bubbles for children. We will pray, sing, and read letters to our friends in Connecticut. We will send the video of our service to the Sandy Hook Elementary community. This is a chance to grieve together as a family and community in a way that's safe for children.

When choosing whether or not to attend with your children, please know we will mention “the tragedy,” “the disaster,” “the sad events, etc.” We will not say “gun” or “shooting” or other graphic terms. We will pray for “people we lost,” but we will not say “dead.” The tone of the service will be poignant, hopeful, comforting, and peaceful. Weare not anti-anything. The service will not have soundbites, agendas, platforms, orspin. We will feature innocent children loving other innocent children.

We hope to navigate a thin line between honoring those who perished and protecting our own children from unnecessary violence.

Dunwoody residents hope new Walmart neighborhood market will boost area around Winters Chapel Road - Dunwoody Reporter

Dunwoody Reporter Article.

Dunwoody residents and officials are hopeful a new Walmart store will bring an economic boost to the east side of their city.  A Walmart neighborhood market, which is a smaller, grocery-focused store, is slated to be built on Winters Chapel Road.  The store will be on the Gwinnett County line, with the building sitting in Gwinnett and much of the parking lot in Dunwoody.

Though it won’t technically be in Dunwoody, many believe that the Walmart store will be a great benefit for the eastern portion of the city. Max Lehmann, a commercial real estate agent who lives in the area, said the proposed store “signals new life.”  “I’ve talked to neighbors about it,” Lehmann said. “I’m just delighted to see a name brand store in this center. This center has struggled for 12 years to get a good combination.”  Lehmann said the neighborhood market would address the “food desert” in the area.  “People in that area can’t walk and get food,” Lehmann said.

Michael Tuller, Dunwoody’s community development director, said Dunwoody and Gwinnett County officials have met to discuss the area and what could be done to attract commercial development.
“It’s showing its age and needs something like a Walmart … to really kind of reinvent that area,” Tuller said. “We hope it happens.”  Tuller said the area is underutilized. “There really should be a higher-end kind of establishment in that corridor,” Tuller said.  “We’re hoping it’s really going to incentivize leasing new commercial in that area with its proximity to Walmart.”  Tuller said the two governments were trying to focus on the area that falls between them.  “You had two different jurisdictions vying for control,” Tuller said. “That’s why it didn’t have a lot of definition in the past.”  Officials are also pleased that the store will be filling a vacancy in an existing shopping center.

“I’m very happy that this is going in,” said City Councilman John Heneghan. “Commercial development to revitalize commercial areas that are already in place is a huge priority for me.”

On Nov. 15, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved a buffer reduction on the site, said Bryan Lackey, acting director of planning and development for Gwinnett County.  Walmart will now go through a plan review process to make sure they address things like building codes, site consideration and landscaping, Lackey said.  “If they’ve met all their codes and regulations, we’d be glad to issue them a building permit for that project,” Lackey said.  Lackey said Gwinnett and Dunwoody had a positive experience working on this development.  “It’s a good example of how two jurisdictions can come together to benefit a neighborhood,” Lackey said. “It was good to see there weren’t any hang-ups between the jurisdictions on moving that forward.”

Peachtree Corners City Council registration starts Monday ends Wednesday.

The Charter for the City of Peachtree Corners was passed by the citizens and as shown in the links below they will only be providing very basic City services of Zoning, Code Enforcement, Building Permits and Solid Waste Disposal.  The City is broken up into three electoral districts whereby at least one council member will be living in the western district (light grey) closest to Dunwoody.   I look forward to working closely with whomever is elected to this position but (for selfish reasons?) my hope is that the person elected lives very close to Winters Chapel Rd and the Dunwoody border.

If I was President of the Lockridge Forest Civic Association (one of the larger communities in the district) I would be looking for a local candidate to rally the community around.  Registration starts this Monday and ends Wednesday for the March election therefore the window of opportunity is very short.  Looking at the referendum results, this electoral district voted against incorporation but it still needs strong leadership to help guide the city on zoning matters specific to the area.

If anyone has interest in running for elected office and having the pleasure of starting a city from scratch but has questions, please feel free to call or reach out to me.  I may not be the best person on Peachtree Corners specifics but I am willing to assist you in researching the matter further.   Below are a few links and an article which describes the registration process.

Qualifying Dates Set for Peachtree Corners Candidates (Patch)

Just a week has passed since Peachtree Corners voters have approved the referendum to incorporate as a city. Now it's time to look forward to electing the mayor and six council members who will be charged with running the new city.

Tuesday morning the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners set the rate for candidates to qualify which will be three percent (3%) of the annual salary for the position they are seeking.  Tuesday afternoon the Gwinnett County Election's office announced that qualifying dates are "Monday, Nov. 28 and Tuesday, Nov. 29 and ending on Nov. 30 at 12 noon."

Lynn Ledford, the Elections Office Director said prospective candidates may come by the Elections office at 455 Grayson Highway, Suite 200, Lawrenceville between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to submit their qualification form and payment.

"Qualifying will be at our office and checks or money orders should be made payable to Gwinnett County BOC. We cannot accept credit or debit cards for payment," said Ledford.

For the mayorial race the cost to qualify will be $270 based on a $9,000 salary as stipulated in the city's charter. And it will cost $240 for anyone wishing to throw their hats in the ring for one of the six council members position, $8,000 salary.

Ledford said campaigning will begin shortly after the qualifying period is over as early voting begins Jan. 20, 2012, with March 6 set as Election Day.

For questions contact the Gwinnett County Elections Office at 678-226-7210.
