Former Chesnut Elementary student provides outstanding community service as a Dunwoody Police Officer but could he live here today?

Yesterday something crossed my desk that I thought I would share.  I saw a tweet by the Dunwoody Police Department honoring the fact that Officer Castellanos was raised in Dunwoody and attended Chesnut Elementary just blocks from my home.  Unsure of where Officer Castellanos lives today, knowing the caliber of our staff and seeing his beautiful family, I wish he was my neighbor as I believe he should have the opportunity to live back in Dunwoody.   Having police officers available locally is a benefit to the Department and the Community, especially in times of emergency or extreme weather.

The Dunwoody Police Department has a great benefit package for our police officers and we have very high standards for those we hire but the starting pay for a new officer is just above $40,000 therefore living here in town would be very difficult.  With new cities coming on board police salaries across the state have raised therefore Dunwoody works hard to hire the best entry level officers we can find but we need to continually evaluate our benefits package against other departments to set recruitment & retention strategy.

One of the benefits of being a Dunwoody Police officer is that every officer gets his own take home police vehicle whereby the city pays for the fuel to & from work. Though I agree with this policy, it is also detrimental to encouraging officers to live locally therefore at the start of the city we also pushed for a local residential stipend, currently at $300 per month for those officers who live within the City Limits.  In our budget discussions this year, besides over all salary, I will be looking to have the local stipend raised, will question out of pocket financial costs of the officers and will look to increase tuition reimbursement.

As a City Councilman, I am always proud to witness a new officer being sworn in to the Department but the churn or turnover of officers leaving for other departments makes me question if we have the right policies in place and I take that responsibility very seriously.  We currently have openings available to be a Dunwoody Police Officer and if you are interested, please apply.

Finally, the City of Dunwoody offers a police explorer program for those teenagers in the community who would like to learn more about becoming a police officer and I highly recommend the program as we need more locally grown officers on the force too.  Thanks for allowing me to serve.  John

Gain insight into fun and exciting careers in the field of law enforcement.

Have you ever wondered what law enforcement really is and wanted to get an idea of what it really entails? Law Enforcement Exploring is a great way to investigate this career opportunity. Exploring is a structured program promoting integrity, leadership and teamwork. Exploring is open to boys and girls, ages 14 to 21, which have completed the 8th grade.

Come join the Dunwoody Police Explorer Post 702 on March 5th for live demonstrations, pizza and fun. Spend the evening with us from 6:30-8:00PM at the Dunwoody Police Department located at 41 Perimeter Center East

The Police Explorers Program is a worksite-based program for young men and women who have completed the eighth grade and are between 14 and 21 years old. The Police Explorers Program is governed by Learning for Life which is a division of the Boy Scouts of America. The Dunwoody Police Department’s Explorer Post (#702) was established with a $2,000 donation in 2009 from the Rotary Club of Dunwoody.

The Police Explorers Program helps participants gain insight into careers in the field of law enforcement in a learning environment with lots of fun-filled, hands-on activities that promote the growth and development. The Dunwoody Explorers meet weekly to train in different aspects of law enforcement and volunteer at community special events and functions.

Participants in the Dunwoody Police Explorers Program are also eligible to compete for Learning for Life and Boy Scouts of America scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000. The community service hours also make Dunwoody Police Explorers eligible for other scholarships and nationally recognized awards.

You can learn more about the Dunwoody Police Explorers program on our Facebook page, view images in the photo gallery, or checkout the PowerPoint presentation about the program.

An uplifting weekend in Dunwoody and I'm still looking forward to Sunday.

Dunwoody Soapbox Derby

The last week was crazy at work and coming home on Friday riding the Marta train; I was exhausted and beat. Instead of staring out the window, I jumped on the blackberry and read the most amazing story between two people whom I and many in the community know.  It immediately picked me up and put me on cloud Nine that has literally carried me for days. What happens on Facebook is not for me to share publicly therefore all I can say is Amy you are AMAZING and a true inspiration to all that know you.

When I finally get home on Friday night we travel way up to Cumming to attend a bbq at an old friend's house where there is a house full of people with kids everywhere. Walking around talking to a few people, a gentleman comes up to me as says, "excuse me John, what was your last name?" I said "Heneghan" and he started laughing at me with a huge goofy smile. He said "hello John, I'm Chris North, an avid reader of your blog, a reporter and would you believe, that just today, I wrote a newspaper article on you."  We laughed, talked a bit of city politics and then our wives rightfully made fun of us for talking shop.  (Here you go Chris, I enjoyed meeting you, as well as now being able to turn the tables writing about you.)

At our house, Saturday morning is dedicated father / son bonding time, (i.e. my wife has declared it to be her time to do whatever she wants to do as long as it has nothing to do with testosterone or parenting).  The Brunswick Zone bowling alley on Spalding had a special, offering the boys and I, two free hours of entertainment, so we took advantage of that and had a great time. (If your kids enjoy the sport, there are great specials and opportunities available.)

Saturday afternoon, I stopped by the Dunwoody Soapbox Derby to see if the Knight's of Columbus needed any help cooking & serving food.  Since they had everything well under control, I watched a few races and mingled with those in attendance.   I talked to lot of people, Dick Williams of the Dunwoody Crier, Mayor Eric Clarkson of Chamblee, Bill Grant, and many others but the conversation I really enjoyed was with a group of three, 16 year old young men serving with the Dunwoody Police Explorers regarding the positive impact that it has already had on their lives.  Awesome program!

While I was doing the soapbox, my wife was able to do something that I wasn't and was to visit "Alex's Lemonade Stand" being put on by a number of Dunwoody families and a bunch of great kids.  My friend Bob Lundsten made it over and gave a nice recap of him meeting the best salesperson he has ever met and her only being 7.

Saturday night, my wife and I attended a friends 40th birthday party here in Dunwoody and the theme was "Senior Prom" where everyone was suppose to dress the same as they did at their prom, oh so many years ago.  For giggles here is a photo from the evening but letting loose, living in an age of digital cameras and social media is a whole lot scarier then when I was in high school and the only equivalent was the yearbook.  Let me tell you, Facebook is not the friend of a guy who can't dance but does it anyway.  Long story, short - we had a great time.

Sunday is shaping up to be a fun day at the neighborhood pool as my 5 yr old has come out of his shell as he is now jumping in and diving down for coins in the big pool where just a week ago he was afraid to leave the comfort of the baby pool.  (Might be that cute redhead Casey he has his eye on?)  Besides time with my kids, playing water volleyball with other adults is really enjoyable and a great way for me to blow off some steam.

Sunday night, I will be attending the Dunwoody Homeowners Association monthly meeting, the last before the 4th of July parade, where the agenda is light but I am guessing someone (not me) will be announcing their candidacy for Mayor and/or other council candidates may be stepping forward for the four positions up for election

So that all Dunwoody residents may have a Merry Christmas... thank you.

From my family to yours, I would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.

The Christmas for Kids event was organized by the Dunwoody Police Department to ensure that every Dunwoody child was able to celebrate the season.  The celebration touched my heart and I wanted to share the video above and the recap below was taken from the January edition of the "On the Beat" police newsletter written by Dunwoody Police Explorer, Sgt. Kelly Harrison.  I am so very proud to be a part of this fine community, thank you for your generosity.
On December 17th the Dunwoody Police Department held the first annual Christmas For Kids Party at North Peachtree Baptist Church. When the kids entered the church, the festive atmosphere consumed them and their faces lit up. First, dinner was served as elves danced around the room spreading Christmas cheer. Then, the children listened to Dr. Tony Romans, the senior pastor, as he explained the true meaning of Christmas. Next, Officer Fidel Espinoza, who was a key contributor to making the night a success, welcomed all of the children and had an amazing surprise to share. The excitement of the kids went through the roof when Officer Espinoza announced that Santa Clause himself was on his way. The children ran to the window to watch Santa’s arrival. Santa walked through the door and immediately was greeted with many hugs. Each child sat in Santa’s lap and received five presents. The joy and appreciation on both the children’s and the parents’ faces were clear to see.

Officer Espinoza sums up the night as “an absolute success”, but this did not come easily. The night was a long time in the making. Over Officer Espinoza’s 14 years of being a police officer he has never seen “such a supportive and appreciative community as Dunwoody”. However, he realized that there are two distinct sides of Dunwoody: a wealthier side and a less privileged side. He wanted to bring all sides of Dunwoody together to help make everybody’s Christmas special. So, Officer Espinoza had the idea of throwing this party both to help others, but also to get all of Dunwoody aware and involved. It was important to Officer Espinoza that this party not solely be an officer event. After all, one of the Dunwoody Police mission statements is to engage the public to do good things for the entire community. So, a developed committee made up of police officers, civilians, city employees, and business owners was formed to help make the party a success. They reached out to the community by asking for help and support. Immediately hundreds of volunteers responded and helped in one way or another. Thanks to the great effort from so many generous people, over 100 children were able to attend the party. The children were hand picked by officers. Through coming into contact with the children and the community’s guidance, officers were able to pick families that really needed help.

Thanks to the communities overwhelming desire to help, there are many presents left over. Of the remaining gifts, 300-500 will be donated to Scottish Rite Hospital and many other charities. Also, officers on duty Christmas Day will load up their patrol cars with presents in case they run into any children in need. The first ever Christmas For Kids party was an unbelievable event, which could not have happened without the community’s effort. Officer Espinoza remarks, “I can’t wait for next year. It will be even bigger and better”.

Dunwoody Police - Ride Along Program

On the birthday of the Dunwoody Police Department, I had the pleasure of sitting in the front seat of a Dunwoody Police Car whereby I recorded it for the entire city to share in the experience. Now the Dunwoody Police Department is offering a better deal - a ride for yourself.

The Dunwoody Police Department is pleased to offer a Ride Along program for citizens. A Ride Along program gives citizens a unique opportunity to learn about the daily challenges and risks that officers face while protecting the community. Citizens also get an “inside” view of how police officers serve the citizens of Dunwoody. In addition, citizens get to interact with a uniformed police officer and ask questions, discuss issues and voice concerns.

“At times, it is very difficult to explain to people the exact duties of a police officer and the complex nature of the job,” says Dunwoody Police Chief Billy Grogan. “However, giving citizens the opportunity to ride along with an officer is very eye opening.” The Dunwoody Police Department is committed to establishing and maintaining close ties with citizens and promoting a realistic understanding of how community needs are being addressed by the department. A ride along program is a great way to do this.

Program Eligibility

Anyone interested in participating in the Dunwoody Police Department’s Ride Along program must complete an Ride-Along Request Form and a Ride-Along Waiver. In addition, applicants must abide by the following rules;
  1. Applicant must be at least 18 years of age unless they are an approved member of the Dunwoody Police Department Explorers Program.
  2. Applicant must have no felony or narcotics convictions and must be free of any misdemeanor convictions which are considered unacceptable by the Chief of Police.
  3. The applicant must complete a criminal history authorization form.
  4. The applicant must complete this ride-along request form.
  5. The applicant must complete a waiver of liability form.
  6. No participant will act as a police agent in any manner.
  7. While participating in the ride-along, no participant is allowed entry into a residence or any other location where a reasonable expectation of privacy exists.
