My comment to Ms. Anna Hill, DeKalb School Board Member at tonight's City Council Meeting.

Ms. Hill, thank you for joining us this evening and for your entry into public service to help guide our community. I know that you have just joined the School Board and that the board sets policy while the day-to-day operations are handled by the Superintendent. I trust you are just getting up to speed on all issues and that you will help shape schoolhouse policy moving forward.

The relationship between governments and ourselves is a social contract of the citizens believing that the government is there to provide beneficial long-term change to the society in which we live and to also sustain our way of life. Governmental entities provide a collective service for all the people in exchange for the citizens providing the funds to make that happen. For the last year, this pandemic has caused turmoil in all segments of our society and our economy, yet essential services have continued to be provided to those with the greatest need. The DeKalb County School System has adapted by only offering virtual education which neither meets many of the citizens' definition of providing beneficial long-term change to our children nor because of the stresses it places upon our families, does it sustain our expected way of life.

Citizens believing that the social contract is not being honored by the DeKalb County School System have been reaching out to elected officials and the school system asking for change but unfortunately, to date, there is no real plan to return to the classroom. Some citizens who have the ability to remedy the situation on their own, by moving to a private school or moving away from our community are now doing so. Citizens whose children are being failed by DeKalb, who cannot take matters into their own hands continue to do everything they can to assist with their child’s education, but they have no option but to take what limited services the system is providing them and honestly for many, many kids it is not just enough!

Ms. Hill, you, as the only elected official with the power to effect change for our children, now is the time to modify the policies of the School System in order to have our children return to the classroom, to do anything thing else is to continue to fail our community.

Thank you and I wish you well in the important job in front of you.
